Host specificity in the egg parasitoid Telenomus busseolae is mediated by sex pheromone compounds
2007
Several studies showed that egg parasitoids are able to detect host sex pheromones produced by adult hosts as a host cue. In this way female wasps are directed toward an area where host mating is in progress and where an oviposition has probably taken place or is soon to occur. Telenomus busseolae Gahan (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) is a solitary egg parasitoid of various noctuids (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae) belonging to the genera Sesamia. In field observations, it has been demonstrated that T. busseolae reacts to the pheromone emitted by females of the corn stalk borer, Sesamia nonagrioides (Lefebvre) and the pink stem borer, Sesamia calamistis (Hampson). It is known that the sex pheromone prod…
Influence of a humid zone on entomocoenosis diversity.
2017
The authors studied the insect diversity associated to humid and dry zones in the Caselli Nature Reserve (Pisa, Tuscany) in 2016 by using two Malaise traps. The average number of species and individual captures increased in the humid zone to about 118% for species and to 152% for individuals respectively. This richness increase was observed for some families of Coleoptera and Hymenoptera Aculeata and Apoidea. Surprisingly, a richness decrease of Lepidoptera (to 89% and 66% respectively for species and individuals) and Orthoptera (to 44% and 21% respectively for species and individuals) in the humid zone has been observed.

The gut bacterial community of the red palm weevil Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier, Coleoptera, Curculionidae) larvae
2011
The red palm weevil (RPW), Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier, Coleoptera, Curculionidae) is the major pest of palm trees in the Mediterranean area. Damages are caused mainly by the endophytophagous larvae that consume the palm tender soft tissues making galleries and producing a wet “frass” with a characteristic fermented odour. The culturable bacterial community associated to the frass produced by RPW larvae inside Phoenix canariensis trees is mainly composed of facultative anaerobe gamma-proteobacteria that have their closest phylogenetic relatives in the gut microbiome of other endophytophagous and xilophagous coleopteran as bark beetles and other plant biomass-degrading insects (leaf-c…
PIANTE AROMATICHE E MEDICINALI: L’ ENTOMOCENOSI DEL CAPPERO IN SICILIA
2005
Guilds of herbivore insects of medicinal and aromatic plants are generally composed by poliphagous insects that only occasionally are present at high infestation levels. In this paper the main insect pests observed on Capper spinosa (L.) in Sicily are described. The key pests of this crop are Capparimyia savastani (Martelli) – (Diptera: Tephritidae), Asphondylia gennadii (Marchal) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), and, the painted bug Bagrada hilaris (Burmeister) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae). Infestations of other insect pests are also occasionally recorded as the case of the southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), in the island of Ustica; the cabbage butterfly, P…
On two Italian Gall Midges (Diptera Cecidomyiidae) and their parasitoids
2016
Some biological data on Cystiphora sonchi (Bremi) and Asphondylia trabuti Marchal in Italy are reported. C. sonchi, previously known only for N Italy, is also recorded for S Italy, Sardinia and Sicily. It induces galls on the leaves of Sonchus spp. (Compositae) all the year around, except for the second half of July and August. The number of galls per leaf was higher in summer (11.6) than in winter (7.4). Overall 5-6 generations per year were observed, with a maximum number of individuals in spring-summer. Larvae often merge in the same gall, pupating inside it and emerging from the lower leaf surface; in winter they can leave galls and pupate outside them. On the whole 426 C. sonchi and 38…

Biological activity of metabolites extracted from Citrus spp. on Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae)
2012
The Mediterranean fruit fly (medfly), Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae), is one of the most injurious pest at global level. During the last years, several electrophysiological and behavioural studies have been carried out in order to investigate plant volatile compound-insect interactions with the aim to use this knowledge in sustainable control techniques. It has been observed that lemons are not attacked by medfly, probably because of the peel oil, that is toxic to other fruit flies. In the present paper electrophysiological recordings were conducted to evaluate the insect sensitivity to peel extract and peel oil of two Sicilian cultivars (Interdonato and Lunario) of C…
