Omphacite textures in eclogites of the Tauern Window: Implications for the exhumation of the Eclogite Zone, Eastern Alps

2008

Abstract We discuss the relationship of omphacite lattice preferred orientation (LPO) patterns in eclogite and kinematic indicators in the matrix surrounding the eclogite during the very rapid exhumation of the deeply buried Eclogite Zone in the Tauern Window of the Eastern Alps. LPO patterns are presented from profiles parallel to the eclogite stretching lineation across the Eclogite Zone. The omphacite textures show symmetric patterns across the entire Eclogite Zone; only in few cases slight asymmetries are observed. The patterns are characterized by an alignment of {110} with the foliation and a maximum of 〈001〉 close to the lineation and are indicative of deformation by intracrystalline…

Nano-inclusion suite and high resolution micro-computed-tomography of polycrystalline diamond (framesite) from Orapa, Botswana

2011

Abstract A single polycrystalline diamond aggregate from the Orapa kimberlite (Botswana) contains a syngenetic micro- and nano-inclusion suite of magnetite, pyrrhotite, omphacite, garnet, rutile and C–O–H fluid in order of abundance. This suite of inclusions is distinctly different from those in fibrous diamonds, although the presence of sub-micrometer fluid inclusions provides evidence for a similarly important role of fluids in the genesis of polycrystalline diamond. It is the first study of polycrystalline diamond by High resolution μ-CT (Computed Tomography) reaching a resolution of 1.3 μm using polychromatic X-rays. Combined with Focused Ion Beam assisted Transmission Electron Microsco…

Hydrothermal origin and age of jadeitites from Sierra del Convento Mélange (Eastern Cuba)

2012

Jadeitite (jadeite jade) from Sierra del Convento (eastern Cuba) occurs in a subduction-related serpentinite-matrix melange associated with a variety of high-pressure tectonic blocks including garnet-amphibolites and related anatectic trondhjemites. The eastern Cuban jadeitite is massive and characterized by rare quartz inclusions and omphacite exsolution in jadeite crystals, as well as replacement or infilling by omphacite. Minor minerals include epidote, biotite, albite, phengite, titanite, rutile, zircon, and apatite. Oscillatory zoning in jadeite crystals and zircon ages suggest hydrothermal crystallization in veins formed in serpentinized peridotite, probably of the mantle wedge. Al-Na…

Phase equilibria modelling of retrograde amphibole and clinozoisite in mafic eclogite from the Tso Morari massif, northwest India: constraining the P…

2014

Phase equilibria modelling of post-peak metamorphic mineral assemblages in (ultra)high-P mafic eclogite from the Tso Morari massif, Ladakh Himalaya, northwest India, has provided new insights into the potential behaviour and source of metamorphic fluid during exhumation, and constrained the P–T conditions of hydration. A series of P–M(H2O) pseudosections constructed in the Na2O–CaO–K2O–FeO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O–TiO2–O (NCKFMASHTO) system show that a number of petrographically distinct hydration episodes occurred during exhumation from peak P–T conditions (~640 °C, 27–28 kbar), resulting in the formation of abundant compositionally zoned amphibole and minor clinozoisite poikiloblasts at the exp…

Pan-African high-pressure metamorphism in the Precambrian basement of the Menderes Massif, western Anatolia, Turkey

2001

The Menderes Massif is made up of Pan-African basement and a Paleozoic to Early Tertiary cover sequence imbricated by Late Alpine deformation. The Precambrian basement comprises primarily medium- to high-grade schists, paragneisses, migmatites, orthogneisses, metagranites, charnockites, and metagabbros. High-pressure relies in the Pan-African basement are divided into two groups: eclogites and eclogitic metagabbros. The mineral assemblage in the eclogites is omphacite (Jd 44)-garnet-clinozoisite-rutile. The eclogites occur as pods and boudinaged layers in the basement schists and paragneisses. Inclusions found in the cores of the garnets indicate a medium-pressure protolith. The eclogitic m…
