Colonization Resistance of the Gut Microbiota against Clostridium difficile

2015

Antibiotics strongly disrupt the human gut microbiota, which in consequence loses its colonization resistance capacity, allowing infection by opportunistic pathogens such as Clostridium difficile. This bacterium is the main cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea and a current problem in developed countries, since its incidence and severity have increased during the last years. Furthermore, the emergence of antibiotic resistance strains has reduced the efficiency of the standard treatment with antibiotics, leading to a higher rate of relapses. Here, we review recent efforts focused on the impact of antibiotics in the gut microbiome and their relationship with C. difficile colonization, as w…

Influence of complex impurity centres on radiation damage in wide-gap metal oxides

2016

Different mechanisms of radiation damage of wide-gap metal oxides as well as a dual influence of impurity ions on the efficiency of radiation damage have been considered on the example of binary ionic MgO and complex ionic–covalent $Lu_{3}Al_{5}O_{12}$ single crystals. Particular emphasis has been placed on irradiation with $\sim$2 GeV heavy ions ($^{197}Au, ^{209}Bi, ^{238}U$, fluence of 10$^{12}$ ions/cm$^{2}$) providing extremely high density of electronic excitations within ion tracks. Besides knock-out mechanism for Frenkel pair formation, the additional mechanism through the collapse of mobile discrete breathers at certain lattice places (e.g., complex impurity centres) leads to the c…

Factors related to early castration resistance in metastatic prostate cancer. Results from the National Prostate Cancer Registry in Spain

2019

Abstract Introduction The objective of the study was to determine the factors independently related with the development of castration resistance (CR) in prostate cancer (PC) in the medium term. Material and methods 155 patients diagnosed with metastatic PC with a follow-up of up to 39 months. Data taken from the National PC Registry. The evaluated variables were age, PSA, nadir PSA, Gleason, perineural invasion, TNM stages, and ADT type (intermittent / continuous). Results Mean follow-up 26,2 ± 13,4 months. 47.1% developed early CR, with mean time until onset of 12,2 ± 8,7 months. Univariate analysis: the mean PSA was correlated with CR (290 ± 905,1 ng/mL in non CR, 519,1 ± 1437,2 ng/mL in…

Radiation hardening techniques for rare-earth-based optical fibers and amplifiers

2012

Er/Yb doped fibers and amplifiers have been shown to be very radiation sensitive, limiting their integration in space. We present an approach including successive hardening techniques to enhance their radiation tolerance. The efficiency of our approach is demonstrated by comparing the radiation responses of optical amplifiers made with same lengths of different rare-earth doped fibers and exposed to gamma-rays. Previous studies indicated that such amplifiers suffered significant degradation for doses exceeding 10 krad. Applying our techniques significantly enhances the amplifier radiation resistance, resulting in a very limited degradation up to 50 krad. Our optimization techniques concern …

Radiation resistance and optical properties of lead fluoride Cherenkov crystals

1998

Abstract Optical properties of large size lead fluoride (PbF 2 ) crystals of three different manufacturers and their degradation caused by 60 Co γ-radiation have been investigated. Transmission losses have been systematically studied at absorbed energy doses between 0.1 and 7 kGy. Several radiation induced absorption bands have been observed. Optical bleaching with light of wavelengths ≳365 nm has been found very effective to restore the original characteristics even after repeated irradiations. This observation together with the high density and the ultraviolet extended transmission make PbF 2 an excellent choice for high rate and high resolution e.m. calorimetry.

The Influence of a Magnetized Plasma Column on the Radiation Characteristics of a Strip Loop Antenna

2014

The radiation characteristics of a circular loop antenna located on the surface of an open waveguide in the form of an axially magnetized plasma column are studied using the rigorously obtained current distribution of such an antenna. The radiation resistance of the antenna excited by a time-harmonic external voltage is obtained for the case where the plasma inside the column is resonant. The distribution of the radiated power over the spatial spectrum of the excited waves is found and discussed.

Development of electrodes materials for SOFC fed by natural gas / biogas. Applications to "pre-reforming" and "single-chamber" concepts

2010

Solid Oxide Fuel Cell is a device for “clean” electricity production from chemical energy. The new configuration called “single-chamber” seems to be very attractive with several advantages over bi-chamber conventional configuration: easier manufacturing, lowering of working temperature, possible use of hydrocarbons as fuel… Such configuration involves the development of new electrode materials satisfying new requirements. The evaluation of 7 potential cathode materials through several characterizations has shown that a compromise has to be found since one material does not exhibit all the requested features. A library of 15 supported catalysts (3 metals and 5 supports) was developed. These …

Two changes of the same nucleotide confer resistance to diuron and antimycin in the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene of Schizosaccharomyces pombe

1988

AbstractDiuron (3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea) and antimycin, both inhibitors of mitochondrial respiration, block electron flow between cytochromes b and c1. Mutants resistant to either drug have been selected using Schizosaccharomyces pombe strains with an extrachromosomally inherited mutator. In analogy to Saccharomyces cerevisiae these mutational sites were assumed to map in the cytochrome b gene. DNA sequence analysis showed that two changes in the same nucleotide are responsible for resistance to antimycin and diuron. Analysis of resistant and sensitive progeny of crosses between the mutants and the wild type confirmed the correlation between mutational alteration and resista…

CFD Study of an Innovative Catamaran with Asymmetrical Hulls

2013

The purpose of this paper is the study of the shape of catamaran with asymmetrical hulls by both experimental and numerical viewpoint. The experimental study is based on the towing tank tests on a catamaran hulls shape obtained from previous works, showing that the wave resistance is very low produces a lower energy loss and a greater effectiveness. The hulls shape is optimized by the CFD application by force of commercial software, which shows that the reduction of wasted energy is very sensitive to make some changes; in particular three different width of the catamaran are tested and their performances are compared.

Silicate and Hydroxide Concentration Influencing the Properties of Composite Al2O3-TiO2 PEO Coatings on AA7075 Alloy

2021

This work evaluates the effect of sodium meta-silicate pentahydrate (SMS) and potassium hydroxide concentrations on properties of Al2O3-TiO2 coatings produced through plasma electrolytic oxidation in a solution containing 3 g L−1 potassium titanyl oxalate, (PTO), using a unipolar waveform with constant current density. The surface and cross-section characteristics of PEO coatings including morphology, elemental distribution, and phase composition were evaluated using FESEM, EDS, and XRD techniques. Voltage-time response indicated the concentration of SMS and KOH had a significant effect on the duration of each stage of the PEO process. More cracks and pores were formed at the higher concent…
