Iron Chelation Therapy in thalassaemia major: a sistematic review with meta-analyses of 1520 patients included on randomized clinical trials

The effectiveness of deferoxamine (DFO), deferiprone (DFP), or deferasirox (DFX) in thalassemia major was assessed. Outcomes were reported as means±SD, mean differences with 95% CI, or standardized mean differences. Statistical heterogeneity was tested using χ2 (Q) and I2. Sources of bias and Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation system (GRADE) were considered. Overall, 1520 patients were included. Only 7.4% of trials were free of bias. Overall measurements suggest low trial quality (GRADE). We have shown that treatment with desmopressin has a very effective hemodilution effect in healthy humans. These results led us to suggest the possible role of desmopressin to mask blood doping in sports. Based on our results, the World Anti-Doping Agency included the desmopressin in the 2011 List of Prohibited Substances and Methods. On this occasion, the aim of our study was to test the desmopressin-induced hemodilution after rHuEpo administration in humans. Procalcitonin for the diagnosis of invasive candidiasis: what is the evidence?

Abstracts Procalcitonin is a widely used marker for the evaluation of infection and sepsis and to guide antibiotic therapy. During the last decade, several studies evaluated its role and diagnostic performance as a surrogate marker for the identification of Candida spp. in suspected invasive candidiasis. A low serum level and a favorable negative predictive value are the main findings for procalcitonin in this setting. The aim of this report is to provide an updated brief summary of the evidence supporting the use of PCT for the management of invasive candidiasis.

The effect of the intensity of odour signals has rarely been investigated in the regulation of odour-guided behaviour in young mammals. This series of experiments used the mammary pheromone (MP) of the female rabbit to assess the influence of stimulus concentration on neonatal pup responsiveness. The MP is a single compound isolated from rabbit milk that releases in pups the typical head searching and oral seizing behaviour. Activation of Na+/H+ exchange and subsequent calcium overload in cardiac myocytes appear to play an important role in myocardial tissue injury following ischemia and reperfusion. Results of several in vitro studies in isolated myocytes and heart preparations and in vivo studies in pigs and rats have suggested that inhibition of Na+/H+ exchange is an effective means to prevent lethal reperfusion injury, arrhythmia, and improve myocardial contractile dysfunction. X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) is a peroxisomal disorder caused by mutations in the ABCD1 (ALD) gene. The ABCD2 gene, its closest homolog, has been shown to compensate for ABCD1 deficiency when overexpressed. We previously demonstrated that the ABCD2 promoter contains a functional thyroid hormone response element. Thyroid hormone (T3) through its receptor TRbeta can induce hepatic Abcd2 expression in rodents and transiently normalize the VLCFA level in fibroblasts of Abcd1 null mice. In a therapeutic perspective, the use of selective agonists of TRbeta should present the advantage to be devoid of side effects, at least concerning the cardiotoxicity associated to TRalpha activation.
