Synthesis of Peroxyapatite by Hydrothermal Processing

Peroxide ions in apatite provides an additional resource for imparting an antibacterial capability in apatite. A hydrothermal process has been developed for including peroxide ions into the apatite lattice. Three oxygen generation compounds, hydrogen peroxide, ammonium persulphate and paracetic acid were investigated for peroxyapatite generation. Hydrogen peroxide provides the highest peroxide containing apatite. Both the oxygen generation and the apatite lattice formation represented the two critical factors for producing peroxyapatite. Selective Extraction and Efficient Binding in a Protic Solvent of Contact Ion Triplets by Using a Thiourea-Based Bis-Calix[6]arene Receptor

We report a D3h-symmetric tail-to-tail bis-calix[6]thiourea 5 that displays two divergent cavities triply connected by thiourea linkages. This calix[6]tube was efficiently synthesized through a [1+1] macrocyclization reaction and characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. The binding properties of this heterotritopic receptor were evaluated in a protic environment (i.e., CD3OD/CDCl3) through NMR studies. Crystallization of the altitude adapted hemoglobin of guinea pig.

Hemoglobin is the versatile oxygen carrier in the blood of vertebrates and a key factor for adaptation to live in high altitudes. Several structural changes are known to account for increased oxygen affinity in hemoglobin of altitude adapted animals such as llama and barheaded goose. Guinea pigs are adapted to live in high altitudes in the Andes and consequently their hemoglobin has an increased oxygen affinity. However, the structural changes responsible for the adaptation of guinea pig hemoglobin are unknown. Enhanced organic mass fraction and decreased hygroscopicity of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) during new particle formation events

In a forested near-urban location in central Germany, the CCN efficiency of particles smaller than 100 nm decreases significantly during periods of new particle formation. This results in an increase of average activation diameters, ranging from 5 to 8% at supersaturations of 0.33% and 0.74%, respectively. At the same time, the organic mass fraction in the sub-100-nm size range increases from approximately 2/3 to 3/4. This provides evidence that secondary organic aerosol (SOA) components are involved in the growth of new particles to larger sizes, and that the reduced CCN efficiency of small particles is caused by the low hygroscopicity of the condensing material. Abstract Strictosidine β- d -glucosidase, a plant enzyme initiating biosynthetic pathways to about 2000 monoterpenoid indole alkaloids with an extremely large number of various carbon skeletons, has been functionally expressed in Escherichia coli and purified to homogeneity in mg scale. Crystals suitable for X-ray analysis were found by robot-mediated screening. Using the hanging-drop technique, optimum conditions were 0.3 M ammonium sulfate, 0.1 M sodium acetate, pH 4.6 and PEG 4000 (10%) as precipitant buffer. The crystals of strictosidine glucosidase belong to the space group P 42 1 2 with unit cell dimensions of a =157.63, c =103.59 A and diffract X-rays to 2.48-A resolution.

Decomposition of ammonium sulfate residue in a high solid/gas ratio suspension state with an industrial-scale reactor system (production line)

Abstract Ammonium sulfate residue is a particulate solid and is produced during the manufacture of ammonium sulfate fertilizer. The residue used in this study contained a large portion of calcium carbonate, from which active lime (CaO) was recovered via thermal decomposition. We used a purpose-built device to decompose the residue in a semi-suspension state. We found that CaO had the highest activity when residue was decomposed at 850–900 °C. Our experiments indicated that ammonium sulfate residue should be decomposed in a suspension state to produce active CaO. D'Alessandro and his co-workers reported on the separation of four different fractions from the Reiter strain of Treponema pallidum (1, 2, 3). This report deals with the thermolabile soluble protein extract of the Reiter treponeme. The antigen employed in this study was prepared by de Bruijn (4) using the technic described by D'Alessandro. The antigen is prepared briefly as follows: The Reiter treponemes are grown in a Brewer thioglycollate medium. After harvesting the washing, the treponemes are subjected to cryolysis. Secondary brown carbon formation via the dicarbonyl imine pathway: nitrogen heterocycle formation and synergistic effects.

Dicarbonyls are known to be important precursors of so-called atmospheric brown carbon, significantly affecting aerosol optical properties and radiative forcing. In this systematic study we report the formation of light-absorbing nitrogen containing compounds from simple 1,2-, 1,3-, 1,4-, and 1,5-dicarbonyl + amine reactions. A combination of spectrophotometric and mass spectrometric techniques was used to characterize reaction products in solutions mimicking atmospheric particulates. Abstract The purpose of this study was to determine the source of nitrogen used by Panicum maximum Jacq. plants in salt soil. Experimenting pots in a greenhouse with a medium of saline soil. The 2 × 3 factorial design is used in repeated trials. The first factor is calcium sulfate (0 and 2 t ha−1), the second factor is N fertilizer includes (a) without nitrogen = N0, (b) 60 kg N of potassium nitrate (KNO3) and (c) 60 kg N of ammonium sulfate (NH4SO4). Negative staining across holes: application to fibril and tubular structures.

The negative staining technique, when used with holey carbon support films, presents superior imaging conditions than is the case when samples are adsorbed to continuous carbon films. A demonstration of this negative staining approach is presented, using ammonium molybdate in combination with trehalose, applied to several fibrillar and tubular samples.
