Effective Field Theories for heavy probes in a hot QCD plasma and in the early universe
2017
There are many interesting problems in heavy-ion collisions and in cosmology that involve the interaction of a heavy particle with a medium. An example is the dissociation of heavy quarkonium seen in heavy-ion collisions. This was believed to be due to the screening of chromoelectric fields that prevents the heavy quarks from binding, however in the last years several perturbative and lattice computations have pointed out to the possibility that dissociation is due to the finite lifetime of a quarkonium state inside the medium. Regarding cosmology, the study of the behavior of heavy Majorana neutrinos in a hot medium is important to understand if this model can explain the origin of dark ma…
Inclusive quarkonium production at forward rapidity in pp collisions at √s = 8 TeV
2016
We report on the inclusive production cross sections of J/ψ, ψ(2S), ϒ(1S), ϒ(2S) and ϒ(3S), measured at forward rapidity with the ALICE detector in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy √s = 8 TeV. The analysis is based on data collected at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.23 pb−1. Quarkonia are reconstructed in the dimuon-decay channel. The differential production cross sections are measured as a function of the transverse momentum pT and rapidity y, over the pT ranges 0 < pT < 20 GeV/c for J/ψ, 0 < pT < 12 GeV/c for all other resonances, and for 2.5 < y < 4. The cross sections, integrated over pT and y, and assuming unpolarized quarkonia, are σJ/ψ = 8.98 ± 0.04 …
Column Adsorption Studies for the Removal of Ammonium Using Na-Zeolite-Based Geopolymers
2022
The aim of this study was to examine the removal of ammonium ions from a synthetic model solution by using Na-zeolite-based geopolymers. Na-zeolite (=analcime) is a residue from mining industry. Three adsorbents were prepared from Na-zeolite using different production steps and metakaolin as a blending agent. These novel adsorbents were investigated in a fixed-bed column system where the effects of different flow rates with the initial ammonium concentration of 40 mg/L were studied. The Thomas, Bohart–Adams and Yoon–Nelson breakthrough curve models fitted well with the experimental data with a high R2 value. After adsorption experiments, adsorbents were regenerated using a mixture of 0.2 M …

N,N-Dimethyl-N-propylpropan-1-aminium chloride monohydrate
2008
The title compound, C8H20N+·Cl−·H2O, has been prepared by a simple one-pot synthesis route followed by anion exchange using resin. In the crystal structure, the cations are packed in such a way that channels exist parallel to the b axis. These channels are filled by the anions and water molecules, which interact via O—H...Cl hydrogen bonds [O...Cl = 3.285 (3) and 3.239 (3) Å] to form helical chains. The cations are involved in weak intermolecular C—H...Cl and C—H...O hydrogen bonds. The title compound is not isomorphous with the bromo or iodo analogues.
1,1,4,4-Tetramethylpiperazinediium dibromide
2009
A small quantity of the title compound, C8H20N22+·2Br−, was formed as a by-product in a reaction between a diamine and an alkyl bromide. The asymmetric unit contains half of a centrosymmetric dication and a bromide anion. In the crystal, weak intermolecular C—H...Br hydrogen bonds consolidate the crystal packing.
Beta-decay studies for applied and basic nuclear physics
2020
In this review we will present the results of recent beta-decay studies using the total absorption technique that cover topics of interest for applications, nuclear structure and astrophysics. The decays studied were selected primarily because they have a large impact on the prediction of a) the decay heat in reactors, important for the safety of present and future reactors and b) the reactor electron antineutrino spectrum, of interest for particle/nuclear physics and reactor monitoring. For these studies the total absorption technique was chosen, since it is the only method that allows one to obtain beta decay probabilities free from a systematic error called the Pandemonium effect. The me…
Labile nitrogen, carbon, and phosphorus pools and nitrogen mineralization and immobilization rates at low temperatures in seasonally snow-covered soi…
2006
Surface mineral horizons from four ecosystems sampled in the northwestern Italian Alps were incubated at −3 and +3°C to simulate subnivial and early thaw period temperatures for a seasonally snow-covered area. The soil profiles at these sites represent extreme examples of management, grazed meadow (site M) and extensive grazing beneath larch (site L) or naturally disturbed by avalanche and colonized by alder (site A) and the expected forest climax vegetation beneath fir (site F). Changes in labile pools of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) were active at all sites at both temperatures during 14 days of laboratory incubation. Ammonium was the dominant inorganic form of total dissolved N (TDN),…
Removal of ammonium ions from aqueous solutions using alkali-activated analcime as sorbent
2023
Five alkali-activated analcime (ANA) sorbents (ANA-MK 1, ANA 2, ANA 3, ANA-MK 4, and ANA-MK 5) were developed for ammonium (NH4+) ion removal. Acid treatment and calcination were used as pre-treatments for analcime, and metakaolin (MK) was used as a blending agent in three sorbents. Sorption experiments were performed to evaluate the effects of sorbent dosage (1–20 g L−1), initial NH4+ ion concentration (5–1000 g L−1), and contact time (1 min–24 h). ANA-MK 1, ANA 2, and ANA-MK 4 were the most efficient sorbents for NH4+ ion removal, with a maximum experimental sorption uptake of 29.79, 26.00, and 22.24 mg g−1, respectively. ANA 3 and ANA-MK 5 demonstrated…
Two new organic-selenate salts: syntheses and crystal structures of bis(di-iso-propylammonium) selenate and di-n-butylammonium hydrogenoselenate
2017
Abstract Two new dialkyammonium selenate salts [i-Pr2NH2]2[SeO4] (1) and [n-Bu2NH2][HSeO4] (2) have been isolated and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Salt 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P21/n with a=8.7190(5), b=8.8500(4), c=22.5953(9) Å, β=94.6290(17)°, V=1737.84(14) Å3 and Z=4. Salt 2 crystallizes in the monoclinic system space group P21/n with a=10.9328(9), b=8.1700(6), c=13.8095(11) Å, β=97.130(3)°, V=1223.94(17) Å3 and Z=4. In both salts, dialkylammonium cations and selenate anions are connected through NH···O and OH···O hydrogen bonds. In the crystal structure, 1 and 2 are organized in layer-like arrangements. Structural characterizations were …
