Predictions for Cold Nuclear Matter Effects in $p+$Pb Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}} = 8.16$ TeV
2017
Predictions for cold nuclear matter effects on charged hadrons, identified light hadrons, quarkonium and heavy flavor hadrons, Drell-Yan dileptons, jets, photons, gauge bosons and top quarks produced in $p+$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}} = 8.16$ TeV are compiled and, where possible, compared to each other. Predictions of the normalized ratios of $p+$Pb to $p+p$ cross sections are also presented for most of the observables, providing new insights into the expected role of cold nuclear matter effects. In particular, the role of nuclear parton distribution functions on particle production can now be probed over a wider range of phase space than ever before.
Mildronate: An Antiischemic Drug for Neurological Indications
2005
Mildronate (3-(2,2,2-trimethylhydrazinium)propionate; MET-88; meldonium, quaterine) is an antiischemic drug developed at the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis. Mildronate was designed to inhibit carnitine biosynthesis in order to prevent accumulation of cytotoxic intermediate products of fatty acid beta-oxidation in ischemic tissues and to block this highly oxygen-consuming process. Mildronate is efficient in the treatment of heart ischemia and its consequences. Extensive evaluation of pharmacological activities of mildronate revealed its beneficial effect on cerebral circulation disorders and central nervous system (CNS) functions. The drug is used in neurological clinics for the trea…
Laser resonant ionization of plutonium
1985
Resonance ionization mass spectrometry (RIMS) has been tested for the isotope-selective determination of trace amounts of plutonium. An atomic beam is formed by evaporating plutonium atoms from a rhenium-filament heated to 1800 °C. The radiation of a pulsed dye laser excites the atoms in a two-photon process (λ=595.2 nm) followed by photoionization of the excited atoms. Mass selectivity is obtained by use of a time-of-flight spectrometer. A resonant signal of239Pu was measured with 1013 atoms deposited on the filament.
Micellization properties of cardanol as a renewable co-surfactant
2015
With the aim to improve the features of surfactant solutions in terms of sustainability and renewability we propose the use of hydrogenated natural and sustainable plant-derived cardanol as an additive to com- mercial surfactants. In the present study we demonstrated that its addition, in amounts as high as 10%, to commercial surfactants of different charge does not significantly affect surfactant properties. Conversely, the presence of hydrogenated cardanol can strongly affect spectrophotometric determination of CMC if preferential interactions with the dyes used take place. This latter evidence may be profitably exploited in surfactant manufacturing by considering that the concurrent pres…
Effective Field Theory and Lattice QCD approaches for hard probes in QCD matter
2018
Hard Probes are an essential tool to discover the properties of the quark-gluon plasma created in heavy-ion collisions. The study of hard probes always involves taking into account very different energy scales, and this is precisely the situation in which Effective Fields Theories (EFTs) are useful. EFTs can be used to separate the short-distance and perturbative physics from the long-distance and non-perturbative. This method combined with Lattice QCD evaluations of the long-distance effects can provide accurate and first principles results. In this proceeding, I will report recent advances in this direction. Results from an EFT computation of quarkonium $R_{AA}$ at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02\,\t…
EXPOSURE OF Gd2O3-ALANINE AND Gd2O3-AMMONIUM TARTRATE ESR DOSIMETERS TO THERMAL NEUTRONS: EXPERIMENTS AND MONTE CARLO SIMULATIONS

ESR RESPONSE TO 60 CO-RAYS OF AMMONIUM TARTRATE PELLETS USING GD2O3 AS ADDITIVE.
2007
This work presents experimental results regarding a new ammonium tartrate blend for ESR dosimetry, with a higher sensitivity and a lower lowest detectable dose (LDD) to 60 Co -rays than the recently used pure ammonium tartrate. The blend composed by ammonium tartrate and gadolinium-oxide (Gd2 O3 ) shows a greater sensitivity (∼2 times) and a smaller LDD than ammonium tartrate. The increased sensitivity was mainly attributed to the great atomic number (Z = 64) of gadolinium, that increases the effective atomic number of the blend; the interaction probability with photons and consequently the radical yield is therefore enhanced. Moreover ammonium tartrate with Gd2 O3 has a linear dose respons…
Evaluation of antifungal activity of three essential oils against selected isolates of Penicillium, Purpureocillium and Acremonium
2018
Storage is a critical process of food production because incorrect conditions during this process lead to the growth of economic costs caused by material loss. It is important to maintain adequate microbiological purity of storage areas. The development of microbes present in warehouses may lead to secondary contamination of stored materials and reduce their quality. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of essential oils on the growth of Acremonium strictum , Penicillium citrinum, Penicillium expansum and Purpureocillium lilacinum . Fungal strains were isolated from the food warehouse. Studies on the influence of selected mix of phenolic substances were performed using three comm…
Comparison of soil microorganism abundance and diversity in stands of European aspen (Populus tremulaL.) and hybrid aspen (Populus tremuloidesMichx. …
2011
The use of short rotation forest tree species is increasing worldwide. The hybrid aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx. × P. tremula L.) is one of the suitable tree species under the climatic conditions of the Baltic region. The cultivation of these trees on former agricultural soils differs from agricultural practices with reduced soil tillage and is characterized by increased demand of nutrients, which in long term can cause changes in the soil microbial populations. The aim of our investigation was to compare soil microbial populations in hybrid aspen and European aspen (P. tremula L.) stands in four sampling plots with aspen age ranging from 10 to 46 years. The abundance and diversity of so…
