A model of oil burnout from glass fabric

1997

A mathematical model is proposed for the process of the removal (by burning) of oil contained in a glass fibre insulation fabric manufactured in Latvia. The small aspect ratio of the fabric allows simplifications to the modelling which reduce the problem to a single nonlinear ordinary differential equation. When the effects of reflected radiation are also included, the differential equation is supplemented by two integral equations. Predictions of the position of the ‘burning zone’ accord well with observations made at the factory. The effect of the inclusion of extra heating chambers is also examined, and it is found that the temperature gradient in the fabric may be greatly decreased in t…

The dynamics of a developing CW supercontinuum: Analytical predictions and experiments

2010

International audience; We show that the development of the supercontinuum spectrum in the quasi-CW regime can be interpreted analytically in terms of Akhmediev Breathers. Theory and experiment are in excellent agreement.

Nonlinear finite element analysis of no-tension masonry structures

1995

A numerical approach for structural analysis of masonry walls in plane stress conditions is presented. The assumption of a perfectly no-tension material (NTM) constitutive model, whose relevant equations are in the form of classical rate-independent associated flow laws of elastoplastic material, allows one to adopt numerical procedures commonly used in computational plasticity. An accuracy analysis on the integration algorithm employed in the solution of constitutive relations has been carried out. The results obtained for some relevant case-studies and their comparison with data, available in the literature show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Intrinsic characterization of space‐time symmetric tensors

1992

This paper essentially deals with the classification of a symmetric tensor on a four‐dimensional Lorentzian space. A method is given to find the algebraic type of such a tensor. A system of concomitants of the tensor is constructed, which allows one to know the causal character of the eigenspace corresponding to a given eigenvalue, and to obtain covariantly their eigenvectors. Some algebraic as well as differential applications are considered.

Dynamical amplification of electric polarization through nonlinear phononics in 2D SnTe

2020

Ultrafast optical control of ferroelectricity using intense terahertz fields has attracted significant interest. Here we show that the nonlinear interactions between two optical phonons in SnTe, a two-dimensional in-plane ferroelectric material, enables a dynamical amplification of the electric polarization within subpicoseconds time domain. Our first-principles time-dependent simulations show that the infrared-active out-of-plane phonon mode, pumped to nonlinear regimes, spontaneously generates in-plane motions, leading to rectified oscillations in the in-plane electric polarization. We suggest that this dynamical control of ferroelectric material, by nonlinear phonon excitation, can be ut…

Accuracy and Completeness of Drug Information in Wikipedia: A Comparison with Standard Textbooks of Pharmacology

2014

The online resource Wikipedia is increasingly used by students for knowledge acquisition and learning. However, the lack of a formal editorial review and the heterogeneous expertise of contributors often results in skepticism by educators whether Wikipedia should be recommended to students as an information source. In this study we systematically analyzed the accuracy and completeness of drug information in the German and English language versions of Wikipedia in comparison to standard textbooks of pharmacology. In addition, references, revision history and readability were evaluated. Analysis of readability was performed using the Amstad readability index and the Erste Wiener Sachtextforme…

On the impact of forgetting on learning machines

1995

People tend not to have perfect memories when it comes to learning, or to anything else for that matter. Most formal studies of learning, however, assume a perfect memory. Some approaches have restricted the number of items that could be retained. We introduce a complexity theoretic accounting of memory utilization by learning machines. In our new model, memory is measured in bits as a function of the size of the input. There is a hierarchy of learnability based on increasing memory allotment. The lower bound results are proved using an unusual combination of pumping and mutual recursion theorem arguments. For technical reasons, it was necessary to consider two types of memory : long and sh…

Two-way quantum and classical machines with small memory for online minimization problems

2019

We consider online algorithms. Typically the model is investigated with respect to competitive ratio. In this paper, we explore algorithms with small memory. We investigate two-way automata as a model for online algorithms with restricted memory. We focus on quantum and classical online algorithms. We show that there are problems that can be better solved by two-way automata with quantum and classical states than classical two-way automata in the case of sublogarithmic memory (sublinear size).
