Metacommunication Patterns in Online Communities

2009

Published version of a chapter in the book: Online Communities and Social Computing. Also available from the publisher at http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-02774-1_26 This paper discusses about contemporary literature on computer-mediated metacommunication and observes the phenomenon in two online communities. The results contribute by identifying six general-level patterns of how metacommunication refers to primary communication in online communities. A task-oriented, user-administrated, community (Wikipedia in Finnish) involved a remarkable number of specialized metacommunication genres. In a centrally moderated discussion-oriented community (Patientslikeme), metacommunication was inter…

The Quality of Service Issue in Virtual Environments

2011

Networked virtual environments (NVEs) have become a major trend in distributed computing, mainly due to the enormous popularity of multi-player online games in the entertainment industry. Nowadays, NVE systems are considered as the supporting technology for many networked and virtual organizations (NVO) (Singhal & Zyda, 1999), especially to those classified within the field of computer supported cooperative work (CSCW), where networked computer can be seen as a standard to provide the technological means to support the team design (Ott & Nastansky, 1997). These highly interactive systems simulate a virtual world where multiple users share the same scenario. The system renders the im…

Towards Introducing User Preferences in OLAP Reporting Tool

2012

This paper presents an OLAP reporting tool and an approach for determining and processing user OLAP preferences, which are useful for generating recommendations on potentially interesting reports. We discuss the metadata layers of the reporting tool including our proposed OLAP preferences metamodel, which supports various scenarios of formulating preferences of two different types: schema-specific and report-specific. The process of semantic metadata usage at the stage of formulating user preferences is also considered. The methods for processing schema-specific and report-specific OLAP preferences are outlined.

A Framework for Opening Data and Creating Advanced Services in the Health and Social Fields

2016

Open data is publicly available data that can be universally and readily accessed, used, and redistributed. Open data holds particular potential in the health and social sectors but, presently, health and social data are often published in a ‘closed’ format. There are different tools that allow to ‘open’ data, clean, structure and process them in order to elaborate them and build advanced services but, unfortunately, there is no single tool that can be used to perform all different tasks. We believe that the availability of Open Data in the health and social fields should be greatly increased and a way for creating new health and social services should be provided. In this paper, we present …

Wronskian representation of solutions of NLS equation, and seventh order rogue wave.

2012

This work is a continuation of a recent paper in which we have constructed a multi-parametric family of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation in terms of wronskians. When we perform a special passage to the limit, we get a family of quasi-rational solutions expressed as a ratio of two determinants. We have already construct Peregrine breathers of orders N=4, 5, 6 in preceding works; we give here the Peregrine breather of order seven.

Nonlinear free vibrations of composite structures via the X-Ritz method

2020

The analysis of large amplitude vibrations of thin-walled cracked structures build as plate assembly is considered in this study. The problem is addressed via a Ritz approach, called X-Ritz, based on the first order shear deformation theory and von K´arm´an’s geometric nonlinearity assumptions. The trial functions are expressed as series of regular orthogonal polynomial products supplemented with special functions able to represent the crack behaviour; boundary functions are used to guarantee the fulfillment of the kinematic boundary conditions. Results are presented, which illustrate the influence of cracks on the stiffening effect due to large amplitude vibrations.

Nonlinear free vibrations analysis of cracked composite stiffened plates via X-Ritz approach

2019

Thin and moderately thick composite multi-layered plates are widely employed in naval and aerospace structures. They can experience the presence of cracks, generated for example by corrosion, fatigue or accidental external causes, which aect their static and dynamic behaviour. As regard the dynamic characteristics of plates, many studies have focused on the linear vibration analysis of both isotropic and composite thin and thick plates, providing for a comprehensive knowledge of the plate dynamic behaviour. However, for an accurate appraisal of the plate dynamics, in some applications it is needed to investigate the nonlinear free vibration problem; a literature survey evidences that the la…

Methods to Compute Pressure and Wall Tension in Fluids containing Hard Particles

2011

Colloidal systems are often modelled as fluids of hard particles (possibly with an additional soft attraction, e.g. caused by polymers also contained in the suspension). in simulations of such systems, the virial theorem cannot be straightforwardly applied to obtain the components of the pressure tensor. In systems confined by walls, it is hence also not straightforward to extract the excess energy due to the wall (the "wall tension") from the pressure tensor anisotropy. A comparative evaluation of several methods to circumvent this problem is presented, using as examples fluids of hard spheres and the Asakura-Oosawa model of colloid-polymer mixtures with a size ratio $q=0.15$ (for which th…
