Energy transmission in the gap of nonlinear media triggered by deterministic and stochastic driving

2016

International audience; These past years, a growing interest has been devoted to the analysis of the response of nonlinearmedia to various excitations wether random or deterministic in order to better characterizetheir transmission properties [1, 2, 3]. Especially, since the introduction of the concept of soliton, the development of nonlinear electrical transmission lines has provided an efficient tool toexperimentally investigate the behaviour of these nonlinear waves [4]. Recently, some effortshave focused on the energy transmission in the gap of media obeying to equations deriving fromthe nonlinear Schr¨odinger model [5, 6]. Indeed, Geniet and Leon have shown that such nonlinearsystems, w…

Integrable Systems and Factorization Problems

2002

The present lectures were prepared for the Faro International Summer School on Factorization and Integrable Systems in September 2000. They were intended for participants with the background in Analysis and Operator Theory but without special knowledge of Geometry and Lie Groups. In order to make the main ideas reasonably clear, I tried to use only matrix algebras such as $\frak{gl}(n)$ and its natural subalgebras; Lie groups used are either GL(n) and its subgroups, or loop groups consisting of matrix-valued functions on the circle (possibly admitting an extension to parts of the Riemann sphere). I hope this makes the environment sufficiently easy to live in for an analyst. The main goal is…

The rapid atmospheric monitoring system of the Pierre Auger Observatory

2012

The Pierre Auger Observatory is a facility built to detect air showers produced by cosmic rays above 1017 eV. During clear nights with a low illuminated moon fraction, the UV fluorescence light produced by air showers is recorded by optical telescopes at the Observatory. To correct the observations for variations in atmospheric conditions, atmospheric monitoring is performed at regular intervals ranging from several minutes (for cloud identification) to several hours (for aerosol conditions) to several days (for vertical profiles of temperature, pressure, and humidity). In 2009, the monitoring program was upgraded to allow for additional targeted measurements of atmospheric conditions shor…

From finite-gap solutions of KdV in terms of theta functions to solitons and positons

2010

We degenerate the finite gap solutions of the KdV equation from the general formulation in terms of abelian functions when the gaps tends to points, to recover solutions of KdV equations in terms of wronskians called solitons or positons. For this we establish a link between Fredholm determinants and Wronskians.

All-optical extinction-ratio enhancement of a 160 GHz pulse train by a saturable-absorber vertical microcavity

2006

International audience; A vertical-access passive all-optical gate has been used to improve the extinction ratio of a 160 GHz pico-second pulse train at 1555 nm. An extinction ratio enhancement of 6 dB is observed within an 8 nm bandwidth. Such a device is a promising candidate for low-cost all optical reamplication and reshaping (211) regeneration at 160 Gbits/s.

Higher-order Kerr terms allow ionization-free filamentation in gases

2010

International audience; We show that higher-order nonlinear indices (n4 , n6 , n8 , n10) provide the main defocusing contribution to self-channeling of ultrashort laser pulses in air and Argon at 800 nm, in contrast with the previously accepted mechanism of filamentation where plasma was considered as the dominant defocusing process. Their consideration allows to reproduce experimentally observed intensities and plasma densities in self-guided filaments.

High-order Kerr nonlinearity of air calibrated with transient molecular alignment

2009

Talk given by O. Faucher; International audience; Nonlinear electronic Kerr index of the major air constituents has been measured up to high order terms using transient molecular alignment as a reference. Sign reversal associated to negative nonlinearity is observed above a pulse intensity of 26 TW/cm^2.

Intermittency in the homopolar disk-dynamo

2006

We study a modified Bullard dynamo and show that this system is equivalent to a nonlinear oscillator subject to a multiplicative noise. The stability analysis of this oscillator is performed. Two bifurcations are identified, first towards an \lq\lq intermittent\rq\rq state where the absorbing (non-dynamo) state is no more stable but the most probable value of the amplitude of the oscillator is still zero and secondly towards a \lq\lq turbulent\rq\rq (dynamo) state where it is possible to define unambiguously a (non-zero) most probable value around which the amplitude of the oscillator fluctuates. The bifurcation diagram of this system exhibits three regions which are analytically characteri…

On the analytical expression of the multicompacton and some exact compact solutions of a nonlinear diffusive Burgers’type equation

2018

International audience; We consider the nonlinear diffusive Burgers' equation as a model equation for signals propagation on the nonlinear electrical transmission line with intersite nonlinearities. By applying the extend sine-cosine method and using an appropriate modification of the Double-Exp function method, we successfully derived on one hand the exact analytical solutions of two types of solitary waves with strictly finite extension or compact support: kinks and pulses, and on the other hand the exact solution for two interacting pulse solitary waves with compact support. These analytical results indicate that the speed of the pulse compactons doesn't depends explicitly on the pulse a…
