Spatial Solitons in 2D Lattices of a Nonlinear Nature

2008

These authors describe their observation of two-color optical solitons in a 2D parametric photonic lattice with hexagonal symmetry in lithium niobate. Their results have enabled wavelength-controlled angular steering and the displacement of self-trapped filaments of light.

Solutions with sign information for nonlinear Robin problems with no growth restriction on reaction

2019

We consider a parametric nonlinear Robin problem driven by a nonhomogeneous differential operator. The reaction is a Carathéodory function which is only locally defined (that is, the hypotheses concern only its behaviour near zero). The conditions on the reaction are minimal. Using variational tools together with truncation, perturbation and comparison techniques and critical groups, we show that for all small values of the parameter λ > 0, the problem has at least three nontrivial smooth solutions, two of constant sign and the third nodal.

Continuous models combining slacks-based measures of efficiency and super-efficiency

2022

AbstractIn the framework of data envelopment analysis (DEA), Tone (Eur J Oper Res 130(3):498–509, 2001) introduced the slacks-based measure (SBM) of efficiency, which is a nonradial model that incorporates all the slacks of the evaluated decision-making units (DMUs) into their efficiency scores, unlike classical radial efficiency models. Next, Tone (Eur J Oper Res 143(1):32–41, 2002) developed the SBM super-efficiency model in order to differentiate and rank efficient DMUs, whose SBM efficiency scores are always 1. However, as pointed out by Chen (Eur J Oper Res 226(2):258–267, 2013), some interpretation problems arise when the so-called super-efficiency projections are weakly efficient, le…

Framing Effects on Online Security Behavior

2020

We conducted an incentivized lab experiment examining the effect of gain vs. loss-framed warning messages on online security behavior. We measured the probability of suffering a cyberattack during the experiment as the result of five specific security behaviors: choosing a safe connection, providing minimum information during the sign-up process, choosing a strong password, choosing a trusted vendor, and logging-out. A loss-framed message led to more secure behavior during the experiment. The experiment also measured the effect of trusting beliefs and cybersecurity knowledge. Trusting beliefs had a negative effect on security behavior, while cybersecurity knowledge had a positive effect.

On a nonlinear Schrödinger equation for nucleons in one space dimension

2021

We study a 1D nonlinear Schrödinger equation appearing in the description of a particle inside an atomic nucleus. For various nonlinearities, the ground states are discussed and given in explicit form. Their stability is studied numerically via the time evolution of perturbed ground states. In the time evolution of general localized initial data, they are shown to appear in the long time behaviour of certain cases.

How do online communities matter? Comparison between active and non-active participants in an online behavioral weight loss program

2016

This paper contributes to the discussion on the potential of different social media platforms in health behavior change programs. More specifically, it compares the outcomes of participation in different online community platforms in an online behavioral weight loss program. Results show that active participants on online community platforms perceive their service experience more positively, follow instructions more precisely, have a more positive perception of achieving their goals, and also feel that they receive more social support than do those who do not actively participate in online community channels, although no differences were found related to weight loss itself. Furthermore, int…

When the print meets the screen: Towards a model of L1 and L2 online reading comprehension

2019

The spread of information and communication technologies (ICTs) has been changing literacy practices and activities. Consequently, the traditional view of literacy as the ability to read and write needs to be revised to encompass new forms of literacy called e-literacy, or “digital/silicon/electronic literacies” (Murray & McPherson, 2006, p. 132) as well as “hyperreading” (Usó-Juan & Ruiz-Madrid, 2009, p. 59). The members of the 21st century “global”, “fluid” and “networked” (Jewitt, 2008) societies engage in activities that the access to the WWW makes possible. The aim of the paper is to discuss print-based models of reading, identify similarities and differences between online and offline…
