New Health Advice: Health Forum Sites as a Change of Discourse Frame, from Doctor-to-Patient to User-to-User

2016

Health forum communities form support groups responding to the need for information. Participants in these communities nd a space in which they share experiences and feelings, and are able to recount their success stories and failures according to a ‘gather, share and learn’ paradigm. One of the main worries concerning these spaces has been the unmonitored information that is provided by users who do not/ cannot take responsibility for what they say. Previous studies were intended to explore how individuals with health issues use health-related online communities to access information and support. This research, on the other hand, examines the extent to which health advice may be conversati…

Justicia digital para el consumidor.

2020

Development Speeded up by Necessity : The Future of Higher Education and Academic Work Online

2021

The COVID-19 pandemic had a dramatic impact on our lives and living. In higher education, it led to a swift shift from on-campus to online education resulting in practices of emergency remote teaching through virtual classrooms. In this project, we seek to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities that this abrupt, enforced change to online education entailed for faculty and students in Sweden and Finland. We aim to examine the evolution of online work and study practices, their impact on the teaching and learning environment, and new expectations imposed on the faculty and students. Our goal is to enhance the theoretical understanding of e-learning, developing guideli…

Sixth graders evaluating online texts : self-efficacy beliefs predict confirming but not questioning the credibility

2023

This study investigated how sixth graders’ credibility evaluation self-efficacy was associated with their ability to evaluate the credibility of online texts. Students (N = 265, Mage = 12.45) worked in a web-based environment, where they read and evaluated two more credible texts and two less credible texts that required confirming and questioning the texts’ credibility, respectively. Students were asked to evaluate the author’s expertise, the author’s benevolence, and the quality of evidence in each text. They were also asked to assess their credibility evaluation self-efficacy during the task. The structural equation model indicated that students’ self-efficacy was positively associated w…

I-gaming contracts: a first appraisal from a consumer point of view

2016

The essay illustrates some critical aspects regarding the contractual relations between online gambling service providers and the community of online gamblers. Such kind of agreements, given their trans-border nature and the electronic environment, imply mostly unexplored matters related to conflict of laws' matters (applicable law and jurisdiction), place of conclusion, and consumer/user protection.

The relationship between working alliance with peer mentors and eating psychopathology in a digital 6‐week guided self‐help intervention for anorexia…

2021

Objective: The quality of working alliance (WA) is associated with treatment outcomes across several types of psychiatric disorders and psychological interventions. This study examined the role of WA with peer mentors (people with lived experience of illness) and student mentors (graduated psychology students) in a 6-week, digital, guided self-help (GSH) intervention for anorexia nervosa. Coding emotions in computer-mediated communication: the example of YouTube comments

2018

Computer-mediated communication (CMC) is essentially text-based. This is generally said to result in a “paucity of paralinguistic and non-linguistic cues” (Bieswanger, 2013: 468), but it is also considered to be the main reason for the development of other characteristic non-verbal modalities, such as emoticons and emoji. How are, then, emotions expressed in such a specific context? Are verbal modalities as limited as they are said to be? Do non-verbal modalities complete or replace them? This paper will try to answer those questions using discourse analysis tools applied to a sample of comments on a YouTube video.
