Fascioliasis pathogenesis depends on fluke burden. In human hyperendemic zones, individual infection intensities reach very high levels and the majority of infected subjects should be in the advanced chronic phase. The rat model offers a useful approach for pathological research in the advanced chronic period. The influence of infection intensity per rat on fluke development, pre-patent period and egg shedding (eggs/g faeces/worm) was analysed in 3 groups (I: 1–3 worms/rat; II: 4–6; III: 7–9). Abstract The development of costly traits such as immune function and secondary sexual traits is constrained by resource availability. The quality of developmental conditions and the availability of resources in ontogeny may therefore influence immune system functions and other biological traits. We analyzed causal pathways between family socioeconomic position, strength of immune response, and five physiological biomarkers in young Latvian men (n = 93) using structural equation modeling. The finding of natural infection of Rattus rattus by Fasciola hepatica on Corsica has stimulated further research into the role of the black rat in the epidemiology of fascioliasis. Corsican black rats were experimentally individually infected with 20 metacercariae from cattle and murine isolates obtained from naturally infected bovines and black rats. The relationship between parasitism and host survival, though, likely varies as the energetic requirements of parasites change during ontogeny. An experimental infection of an acanthocephalan (Acanthocephalus lucii) in its isopod intermediate host (Asellus aquaticus) was conducted to investigate host survival and growth throughout the course of parasite development. Evolutive transformations of ontogeny in the two main groups of Harpoceratinae which colonize the North-West Europe during the lower Domerian — Protogrammoceras (Matteiceras) and Protogrammoceras (Fieldingiceras) — are analyzed. Within P. (Matteiceras) these transformations belong to a strict heterochronical logic (translation of a standard ontogenetic trajectory). Within P. (Fieldingiceras) the alterations of the ontogeny cannot be placed in a same logic. Moreover, the P. (Matteiceras) heterochronical issues are complex: paedomorphic (neoteny) and peramorphic (acceleration) tendencies appear on both sides of critical point (inversion point) for a same feature, the ribs density.
Embryonic Ammonoid Shell Features: Intraspecific Variation Revisited

Two samples of ammonoids belonging to the Oppeliidae, Sublunuloceras virguloidesHecticoceras (Brightii) canaliculatum, are analyzed to estimate the intraspecific variability of embryonic shell features. The study of embryonic shell characters reveals two main shapes of protoconch, flattened and round. Prosiphons may be straight or slightly curved. New parameters for area are added to the linear parameters commonly found in the literature. Prosiphon length and caecum area vary greatly whereas protoconch and ammonitella diameter vary only slightly, and the ammonitella angle is almost constant.
