Patterns in Size and Shedding of Fasciola hepatica Eggs by Naturally and Experimentally Infected Murid Rodents
2002
Using samples collected on the island of Corsica, a comparative study was done of the morphometry of Fasciola hepatica eggs shed by cattle and by naturally and experimentally infected murid rodents (wild Mus musculus and Rattus rattus and Rattus norvegicus Wistar laboratory strain). Eggs shed by murids are smaller in size than those shed by naturally infected cattle. A second study analyzed the number of F. hepatica eggs shed in murid feces at different time intervals, i.e., months, days, and 6-hr periods, by the Kato-Katz technique. Both experimentally and naturally infected black rats (R. rattus) were used, and Wistar rats were experimentally infected and included for comparison. The pres…
Long-lasting exocytosis and massive structural reorganisation in the egg periphery during cortical reaction inPlatynereis dumerilii(Annelida, Polycha…
1995
SummaryThe course of the cortical reaction in thePlatynereis dumeriliiegg is described from live observation and from sectioned fixed material and is found to differ in several aspects from the course of cortical reactions in better-known systems. Cortical granules are unusually numerous. They are discharged by exocytosis during a period of about 25 min following fertilisation (18°C). Most of the surplus membrane material brought to the egg surface by exocytosis is set free into the perivitelline space. Swelling of egg jelly precursor secreted by cortical granule exocytosis may be causal for the detachment of the vitelline envelope from the egg cell surface which, however, remains attached …
DNA-methylation dependent regulation of embryo-specific 5S ribosomal DNA cluster transcription in adult tissues of sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus
2013
Abstract We have previously reported a molecular and cytogenetic characterization of three different 5S rDNA clusters in the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus and recently, demonstrated the presence of high heterogeneity in functional 5S rRNA. In this paper, we show some important distinctive data on 5S rRNA transcription for this organism. Using single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis, we demonstrate the existence of two classes of 5S rRNA, one which is embryo-specific and encoded by the smallest (700 bp) cluster and the other which is expressed at every stage and encoded by longer clusters (900 and 950 bp). We also demonstrate that the embryo-specific class of 5S rRNA is ex…
The serosa of Manduca sexta (Insecta, Lepidoptera): ontogeny, secretory activity, structural changes, and functional considerations
2001
In Manduca sexta, the blastoderm forms successively and becomes immediately cellularized as the cleavage energids reach the surface of the oocyte. Presumptive serosal cells are large and contain 2 or 4 large polyploid nuclei; presumptive embryonic cells are small and mononuclear. All parts of the blastoderm participate in the uptake and digestion of yolk material. About 10 h post-oviposition, the blastoderm breaks at the amnioserosal fold and the extraembryonic part closes above the germ band and constitutes the serosa (12 h post-oviposition, i.e. 10% development completed). At once, the serosa starts to secrete a cuticle consisting of an epi- and a lamellated endocuticle. Detachment of the…
The oxidizing agent tertiary butyl hydroperoxide induces disturbances in spindle organization, c-meiosis, and aneuploidy in mouse oocytes
1996
It has been recently proposed that a concomitant generation of oxidative stress of oocytes with increasing maternal age may be a major factor responsible for the age-related increase in aneuploid conceptions. As a preliminary step in the testing of this hypothesis, we need to confirm that oxidative stress in itself can induce errors in chromosome segregation. In order to achieve this goal, germinal vesicle (GV)-stage mouse oocytes from unstimulated ICR and (C57BL x CBA) F1 hybrid female mice were matured in vitro for 9 h for metaphase I (MI) oocytes or 16 h for metaphase II (MII) oocytes in the presence of varying concentrations of the oxidizing agent tertiary-butyl hydroperoxide (tBH). MII…
Endometriosis and strategies of fertility preservation: a systematic review of the literature.
2019
Endometriosis is a common chronic inflammatory disorder, often causing both pain and infertility. It is estimated that 25-50 % of patients undergoing fertility treatments have had endometriosis as it involves an impairment of the ovarian reserve. For these reasons, endometriosis has been highlighted as a condition that may require a fertility preservation procedure, while being benign in nature. The aim of this review is to summarize the current evidence on fertility preservation techniques for patients affected by endometriosis, focusing on the main characteristics of the different approaches. A systematic review of literature was performed by searching in the main electronic databases (ME…
Predictive variables of in vitro fertilization and pre-implantation embryo development in the mouse
2002
The present study aims to analyze the cause-effect relationships among several in-vitro fertilization and pre-implantation embryo development variables in the mouse. Superovulation of hybrid (C57Bl/6JIco female X CBA/JIco male) female mice of 4-6 weeks of age was induced by a priming injection of pregnant mare's serum gonadotropin at the estrus stage of the estrous cycle followed after a 48-hr interval by human chrorionic gonadotropin. Ovulated cumulus-enclosed oocytes were inseminated with sperm from hybrid males of 12-16 weeks of age. The multiple linear regression analyses performed indicated that (a) total number of ovulated oocytes is a good predictor of both fertilization frequency an…
Stage of the estrous cycle at the time of pregnant mare's serum gonadotropin injection affects the quality of ovulated oocytes in the mouse
2002
The present study aims to analyze the effect of the stage of the estrous cycle at the time of pregnant mare's serum gonadotropin (PMSG) injection on number and quality of mouse oocytes retrieved from oviducts after exogenous ovarian stimulation. Cellular and morphological traits of ovulated oocytes from hybrid (C57Bl/6JIco female X CBA/JIco male) female mice of 12, 40-42, 50-52 or 57-62 weeks of age were analyzed. Superovulation was induced by a priming injection of PMSG at different stages of the estrous cycle followed after a 48-hr interval by human chrorionic gonadotropin. Injection of PMSG at diestrus-1 was associated with: (1) increased percentage of cumulus-free oocytes; (2) raised to…
Stage of the estrous cycle at the time of pregnant mare's serum gonadotropin injection affects pre-implantation embryo development in vitro in the mo…
2002
The present study aims to analyze in the mouse the effect of the stage of the estrous cycle at the time of pregnant mare's serum gonadotropin (PMSG) injection on fertilization of ovulated cumulus-enclosed oocytes and later embryo development in vitro to the blastocyst stage. Quality of blastocysts was evaluated by staining and counting of total number of nuclei, mitotic index, percentage of apoptotic nuclei, and cell allocation to the inner cell mass (ICM) and trophectoderm (TE) lineage. Superovulation of hybrid (C57Bl/6JIco female x CBA/JIco male) female mice of 4-6 weeks of age was induced by a priming injection of PMSG at different stages of the estrous cycle followed after a 48-hr inter…
Oral antioxidants counteract the negative effects of female aging on oocyte quantity and quality in the mouse
2002
This study aims to compare the effect of early and late onset administration of oral antioxidants on number and quality of oocytes retrieved from aged mice after exogenous ovarian stimulation. Control hybrid females were fed a standard diet supplemented or not supplemented with pharmacological doses of vitamins C and E either from the first day of weaning or from the age of 32 weeks until they were autopsied at the age 40-42, 50-52, or 57-62 weeks after exogenous ovarian stimulation. Analysis of chromosomal distribution, DNA organization and cellular morphology was performed in ovulated cumulus-enclosed and -free oocytes, ovarian non-germinal vesicle oocytes enclosed by or free of mucous cu…
