GPS Monitoring of the Scopello (Sicily, Italy) DGSD Phenomenon: Relationships Between Surficial and Deep-Seated Morphodynamics
2015
The Scopello area, which is located along the north-western Tyrrhenian coastal sector of the Sicilian chain (Italy), is widely affected by Deep-seated Gravitational Slope Deformation (DGSD) phenomena, which are mainly the result of a geomorphologic setting marked by the outcropping of an overthrust plan, limiting a brittle fractured carbonate slab, laid onto a ductile marly-clayey substratum. Due to the very advanced stage of the deformation phenomena, a coupled morphodynamic style has established between shallow landslides and DGSD phenomena, affecting the exhumed ductile substratum and the overlaying rigid dismantled slab, respectively. A GPS network was realized for monitoring the Scopel…
A PROCEDURE FOR THE EVALUATION OF INSTALLED PROPELLER NOISE
2001
Abstract A method for the prediction of the acoustics of a propeller in the flow-field of a wing is presented. The method is used to study the noise generated by the unsteady loading induced on the propeller as it passes through the wing flow-field. Both the aerodynamic and acoustic methods are previously proven techniques, the aerodynamic method being based on a combination of free wake analysis and a three-dimensional boundary element method, while the acoustic calculation is a full-surface, moving medium form of the Ffowcs Williams–Hawkings equation. Calculations are presented for a reference case of a four-bladed low-speed propeller in forward flight. The acoustic predictions are supple…
Oscillation dynamics of free vortex surface in uncovered unbaffled stirred vessels
2016
Abstract The main feature of unbaffled stirred tanks is the highly swirling liquid motion, which leads to the formation of a central vortex on the liquid free surface, when the vessel is operated without top-cover (Uncovered Unbaffled Stirred Tanks, UUST). One of the main drawbacks of such vessels, that limits their industrial applicability, is the possible onset of low-frequency sloshing of the free surface. In this work, original data on oscillation dynamics in UUST are presented. In particular, data focus on the oscillation amplitude as well as on their frequency. Data were obtained by means of a novel experimental technique based on digital image analysis. The effect of impeller geometr…
On the induced drag reduction due to propeller-wing interaction
1995
AbstractThe aerodynamic interaction between a wing and a couple of propellers in tractor configuration is investigated by means of a model based on the lifting line concept and under the assumption of quasi-steady incompressible motion of inviscid fluid. The ways the propellers influence the wing performances, particularly the induced drag, are analysed. It turns out that the lift increase and the possible drag reduction depend strongly on the direction of the blade rotation and on the propeller distances from midspan, and result from two main effects: the direct propeller induction on the wing and the modification of the lift distribution along the span. An additional nonlinear (mixed) con…
Different Wings Flowfields Interaction on the Wing-Propeller Coupling
1997
A high-portability numerical technique based on the method of free wake analysis (FWA) is described that analyzes the interference between an aircraft propeller and a wing having different planforms and computes the influence of the wing aerodynamic field on the propeller performance. For an isolated propeller and wing, the models employed are based on the FWA and Prandtl theory, respectively. The performance of the propeller in the presence of the wing is related to the wing angle of attack and to the variation of wing circulation and the corresponding induced velocity at the propeller disk. A numerical model, previously and successfully used, was implemented to account for the effects of …

Benthic foraminiferal assemblage turnover during intensification of the Northern Hemisphere glaciation in the Piacenzian Punta Piccola section (South…
2012
Abstract We present the results of a high-resolution analysis of the benthic foraminiferal assemblages at the Punta Piccola section (Stratotype for the Piacenzian Stage), which spans the gradual climate transition of the intensification of the Northern Hemisphere glaciation (3.6–2.6 Ma). This study highlighted a major benthic foraminiferal fauna turnover, which started at about 3.05 Ma with LO of Cibicidoides italicus , registered the gradual decline of Stilostomella spp. and culminated at about 2.7–2.75 Ma, when the dominant Siphonina reticulata was replaced by Cibicidoides pachyderma , costate Bulimine, spinose Bulimine, spinose Uvigerine and the Bolivina dilatata group. Four compositiona…

News on collectivity in Pb-Pb collisions from the ALICE experiment
2017
The collective expansion of the color-deconfined fireball created in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions maps the initial state of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) to the final-state particle spectrum. The ALICE experiment has been leading important roles for completing the individual flow harmonic measurements at the highest energies to date as well as improving flow harmonic correlation techniques to understand the properties of the QGP and the full evolution of the heavy-ion collisions. In this article, a brief summary of the individual flow harmonic measurements, the details of the new observables developed in recent years from ALICE collaboration and their implications to future studie…
Playing horror : narrative and genre in Valve's Left 4 Dead Series
2013
The place of story and narrative in digital games has been a hotly contested topic within the field of Game Studies during the past two decades. Beyond the question of whether games can or should be used for telling stories, research interest has focused on the nature of game narratives and their distinct qualities in comparison to other expressive media, like literature and film. The aim of this thesis is to contribute to this debate by examining the elements involved in storytelling not in digital games overall, but in one particular series, namely Valve Software‘s Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2. The use of this in-depth case study allows an examination of how various different elements co…
