Peripapillary Choroidal Thickness and Choroidal Area in Glaucoma, Ocular Hypertension and Healthy Subjects by SD-OCT.

2015

Background: The exact pathogenesis of open angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension remains unclear. Hemodynamic influences are discussed as potential risk factors and the choroid may play an important role in the pathogenesis of open angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. The current study investigates peripapillary choroidal thickness and choroidal area in patients with open angle glaucoma, subjects with ocular hypertension and healthy subjects using spectral-domain OCT. It furthermore assesses the association between peripapillary choroidal thickness and age, central corneal thickness, refractive error and intraocular pressure. Patients and Methods: Prospectively recorded data of 213 eyes …

Efficacy and Tolerability of Biweekly Bevacizumab, Irinotecan, Folinic Acid and Fluorouracil Intravenous Bolus (BIFF Regimen) in Patients With Metast…

2011

Abstract Background We have extensively assessed a biweekly regimen of irinotecan plus folinic acid and fluorouracil bolus (IRIFAFU) in metastatic colorectal cancer (MCRC). Here, we report on the safety and activity of BIFF (bevacizumab plus IRIFAFU) regimen in 94 mCRC patients. Patients and Methods Bevacizumab 5 mg/kg (1 hour), and irinotecan 180 mg/m 2 (1hour) were given intravenously on day 1, 6S-folinic acid 250 mg/m 2 (2 hours), and fluorouracil 850 mg/m 2 (bolus) were given intravenously on day 2 every 2 weeks for a median of 9 cycles per patient (range, 1-12), and maintenance bevacizumab alone was delivered in 16 cases. Results Grade ≥ 3 hematologic toxicities were neutropenia (50%) …

Cancer patients requiring interruption of long-term warfarin because of surgery or chemotherapy induced thrombocytopenia: The use of fixed sub-therap…

2012

No data are available regarding the management of cancer patients requiring interruption of long-term vitamin-K antagonist (VKA) therapy. For this purpose, we tested the efficacy and safety of fixed doses of low-molecular weight heparin (LMWH) in substitution of VKA because of invasive procedures or chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia. In cancer patients on VKA, therapy was discontinued 5 ± 1 days before surgery or chemotherapy. Heparin was given at prophylactic dosage in patients at low risk and at fixed subtherapeutic doses (3,800 or 4,000 UI anti-FXa, b.i.d.) in those at high-risk for thrombosis. LMWH was reinitiated 12 hr after surgery and VKA the day after. In patients receiving chem…

Sarcopenia as prognostic factor for survival after orthotopic liver transplantation

2020

Background and aim Body composition has emerged as a prognostic factor for end-stage liver disease. We therefore investigated muscle mass, body fat and other clinical-pathological variables as predictors of posttransplant survival. Methods A total of 368 patients, who underwent orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) at our institution, were assessed prior to OLT and followed for a median of 9.0 years (range 2.0-10.0 years) after OLT. Psoas, erector spinae and the combined paraspinal muscle area, as well as the corresponding indices normalized by body-height squared, were quantified by a lumbar (L3) cross-sectional computed tomography. In addition, absolute body fat and bone density were est…

The Construct of Sexual Openness for Females in Steady Intimate Relationships

2017

The analysis of open-minded attitudes towards sexuality in general requires a construct based on attitudinal dimensions. Although several existing studies involve sexual attitudes, they differ substantially and standardized conceptual work is missing. Thus, the authors introduce the latent variable sexual openness to develop a construct based on self-oriented attitudes towards different sexual topics. Available survey data of female German students in a steady relationship allowed providing a first empirical test for the applicability of this construct. Five subdimensions are acknowledged central for sexual openness: sexual practices, masturbation, bisexuality, permissiveness, and pornograp…

Personality Variables as Predictors of Facebook Usage

2014

This study investigates the role of personality factors as predictors of Facebook usage. Data concerning Facebook usage and personality factors from 654 Facebook users were gathered using a web survey. Using path analysis, the results showed Openness was a predictor of Facebook early adoption, Conscientiousness with sparing use, Extraversion with long sessions and abundant friendships, and Neuroticism with high frequency of sessions. The possible role of Agreeableness in predicting low session frequency and friendships needs further validation.

Splenectomy for primary immune thrombocytopenia revisited in the era of thrombopoietin receptor agonists: New insights for an old treatment

2022

Although splenectomy is still considered the most effective curative treatment for immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), its use has significantly declined in the last decade, especially since the approval of thrombopoietin receptor agonists (TPO-RAs). The main objective of the study was to determine whether splenectomy was still as effective nowadays, particularly for patients with failure to respond to TPO-RAs. Our secondary objective was to assess, among patients who relapsed after splenectomy, the pattern of response to treatments used before splenectomy. This multicentre retrospective study involved adults who underwent splenectomy for ITP in France from 2011 to 2020. Response status was defi…

Continuous intravenous infusion of dipyridamole as adjunctive therapy in the treatment of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura.

2003

Abstract Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is an uncommon hematologic thrombotic disorder characterized by fever, hemorrhagic and neurologic signs. The advent of plasma exchange has dramatically improved the prognosis of this disease, which was once inevitably fatal. However, mortality rates remain significant. Antiplatelet drugs have been widely used in combination with plasma exchange. In this pilot study we investigated the effects of an adjunctive therapy consisting of the continuous, intravenous infusion of dipyridamole, a modality of administration that has not been previously tested in this setting. Sixteen untreated TTP patients, diagnosed consecutively at our clinic, receiv…

The Italian Multiple Sclerosis Database Network (MSDN): The risk of worsening according to IFNβ exposure in multiple sclerosis

2006

We evaluated the risk of worsening according to the length of exposure to interferon beta (IFNβ)ina large cohort of 2090 multiple sclerosis patients collected by the Italian MS Database Network. Overall 44-140 patient-visits with a follow-up of 22-143 patient-years were evaluated. Forty-one per cent of patients were exposed to IFNβ for up to 2 years, 39% for 2- 4 years and 20% for more than 4 years. A Cox regression model was used to analyse two clinical outcomes: disability progression and worsening of relapse rate. The technique of propensity score was applied to reduce bias in the comparison of non-randomized groups. The risks of disability progression (HR=0.23; 95% CI: 0.17 - 0.30) and …
