Differentiation of Demographic Processes in the Regions of the Polish - Czech Borderland and their Socio-Economic Implications
2016
Global and irreversible, in many parts of the world, character of demographic transformations in the form of population decline, as well as progressive ageing process, have contributed to the fact that more attention is now directed towards the demographic determinants of socioeconomic development. The changes in the numbers and structures of the population not only require re-modelling of economies and regions but, above all, generating completely new social tasks that would lead to a more intense relationship between the demographic growth, both economic and social, as well as the need for actions to harmonize them. This article aims at showing the nature of the population transformations…
A branch-and-cut algorithm for the Team Orienteering Problem
2017
The Team Orienteering Problem aims at maximizing the total amount of profit collected by a fleet of vehicles while not exceeding a predefined travel time limit on each vehicle. In the last years, several exact methods based on different mathematical formulations were proposed. In this paper, we present a new two-index formulation with a polynomial number of variables and constraints. This compact formulation, reinforced by connectivity constraints, was solved by means of a branch-and-cut algorithm. The total number of instances solved to optimality is 327 of 387 benchmark instances, 26 more than any previous method. Moreover, 24 not previously solved instances were closed to optimality.
Patient-centered outcomes after surgical treatment of peri-implantitis: a prospective clinical study.
2022
Background: Peri-implantitis is an inflammatory process affecting soft and hard tissues surrounding dental implants, causing progressive marginal bone loss. Peri-implant surgery is the treatment of choice. However, evidence about its impact on patients' quality of life (QoL) is limited. This study aimed to assess pain and QoL in the first seven post-operative days and measure patient satisfaction at the end of this period. Material and methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted in patients with peri-implantitis. Patients reported pain on a visual analogue scale (VAS) ranging from 0 to 100mm every day during the first week after surgery. They then completed the OHIP-14sp questionnaire…

Learning-based multiresolution transforms with application to image compression
2013
In Harten's framework, multiresolution transforms are defined by predicting finer resolution levels of information from coarser ones using an operator, called prediction operator, and defining details (or wavelet coefficients) that are the difference between the exact and predicted values. In this paper we use tools of statistical learning in order to design a more accurate prediction operator in this framework based on a training sample, resulting in multiresolution decompositions with enhanced sparsity. In the case of images, we incorporate edge detection techniques in the design of the prediction operator in order to avoid Gibbs phenomenon. Numerical tests are presented showing that the …
A Power Sector in Transition Understanding Transition Towards a Cleaner Grid and how Distributed Energy Resources Affect the Design and Operation of …
2018
Important changes in the supply and the demand side of electricity apparatus are now underway, triggered by a combination of drivers dramatically affecting the transmission sector of power systems: greenhouse gas emissions, distributed generation, energy efficiency and the full integration of the European energy market. A variety of accelerating factors - including active consumer, aggregators, energy storage, e-vehicles, etc..- are creating a new era for the many stakeholders, incl. system operators, regional entities, industry and consumer organizations, producers or their trade bodies, Regulators, public decision makers and the society at large. Entraining this background, ENTSO-E and th…
Social media overload, exhaustion, and use discontinuance : Examining the effects of information overload, system feature overload, and social overlo…
2020
While users’ discontinuance of use has posed a challenge for social media in recent years, there is a paucity of knowledge on the relationships between different dimensions of overload and how overload adversely affects users’ social media discontinuance behaviors. To address this knowledge gap, this study employed the stressor–strain–outcome (SSO) framework to explain social media discontinuance behaviors from an overload perspective. It also conceptualized social media overload as a multidimensional construct consisting of system feature overload, information overload, and social overload. The proposed research model was empirically validated via 412 valid questionnaire responses collecte…
Exploring the Anatomy of Franchising: A Cross-National Examination of US and Finnish Franchise Contract Provisions
2004
The present study focuses on describing and comparing the provisions of the franchise contracts and pre-sale disclosures to prospective franchisees in the USA and Finland. A fact that makes the investigation especially interesting is that no franchising specific legislation exists in Finland. Whereas in the USA franchisors are by a directive of the Federal Trade Commission required to publicly disclose key information on their franchise systems. The information is of paramount importance for potential franchisees who need to analyze franchise offering(s) before their buying decision. Two separate samples were developed for the study. The member franchisors of the International Franchise Ass…
On the use of generalized harmonic means in image processing using multiresolution algorithms
2019
In this paper we design a family of cell-average nonlinear prediction operators that make use of the generalized harmonic means and we apply the resulting schemes to image processing. The new famil...
