A spectrofluorimetric study of binary fluorophore-cyclodextrin complexes used as chiral selectors

2005

Abstract Six binary complexes between three fluorophores (pyrene, xanthone and anthraquinone) and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) or heptakis-(6-amino)-(6-deoxy)-β-cyclodextrin (am-β-CD) were tested at two pH values (8.0 and 9.0) as chiral selectors for three α-amino acids chosen as model. The conditional constant (β2T) values for ternary complexes (fluorophore-CD-amino acid), determined by means of fluorescence spectroscopy, showed that the binary complexes are suitable receptors for chiral recognition. The effect of α-amino acids on stability and stoichiometric ratio of the binary complexes has also been studied. The binary complexes were in most cases stabilized by adding the ternary agent. The tr…

Polymeric scaffolds prepared via Thermally Induced Phase Separation (TIPS): Tuning of structure and morphology

2007

Scaffolds suitable for tissue engineering applications were prepared by Thermally Induced Phase Separation (TIPS) starting from a ternary solution PLLA/dioxane/water. The experimental protocol consisted of three consecutive steps, a first quench from the homogeneous solution to an appropriate demixing temperature (within the metastable region), a holding stage for a given residence time and a final quench from the demixing temperature to a low temperature (within the unstable region). A large variety of morphologies, in terms of average pore size and interconnection, were obtained upon modifying the demixing time and temperature, owing to the interplay of nucleation and growth processes dur…

Hofmann-Like Frameworks Fe(2-methylpyrazine)n[M(CN)2]2 (M = Au, Ag) : Spin-Crossover Defined by the Precious Metal

2020

Hofmann-like cyanometalates constitute a large class of spin-crossover iron(II) complexes with variable switching properties. However, it is not yet clearly understood how the temperature and cooperativity of a spin transition are influenced by their structure. In this paper, we report the synthesis and crystal structures of the metal–organic coordination polymers {FeII(Mepz)[AuI(CN)2]2} ([Au]) and {FeII(Mepz)2[AgI(CN)2]2} ([Ag]), where Mepz = 2-methylpyrazine, along with characterization of their spin-state behavior by variable-temperature SQUID magnetometry and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The compounds are built of cyanoheterometallic layers, which are pillared by the bridging Mepz…

Genotoxic Potential of N ‐(Benzothiazolyl)sulfonamide Copper(II) Complexes on Yeast Cells Transformed with YEGFP Expression Constructs Containing the…

2006

Four ternary complexes [Cu(L)2(phen)] where L is an N(benzothiazol-2-yl)sulfonamide derivative have been prepared and their ability to cleave DNA has been studied. The complexes were structurally characterized with the aid of single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Whereas the molecular structure of the [Cu(L1)2(phen)] (1) [HL1 = N-(6-chlorobenzothiazol-2-yl)benzenesulfonamide] and [Cu(L3)2(phen)] (3) [HL3 = N-(benzothiazol-2-yl)benzenesulfonamide] complexes can best be described as having a distorted squareplanar geometry, that of the [Cu(L4)2(phen)] (4) [HL4 = N(benzothiazol-2-yl)toluenesulfonamide] complex shows a strictly square-planar geometry. The [Cu(L2)2(phen)MeOH] (2) [HL2 = N-(6-chl…

Unravelling the chemical design of spin-crossover nanoparticles based on iron(ii)–triazole coordination polymers: towards a control of the spin trans…

2015

A systematic study of the key synthetic parameters that control the growth of spin-crossover (SCO) nanoparticles (NPs) using the reverse micelle technique has been undertaken in the system [Fe(Htrz)2(trz)](BF4)·H2O, (Htrz = 1,2,4-triazole). This has permitted us to modulate the physical properties of the NPs in a controlled and reproducible manner. In particular, a control over the size of the NPs (in the range 4 to 16 nm) has been achieved by varying the water to surfactant molar ratio. The consequences of this size variation on the cooperativity of the spin transition are discussed. Finally, this approach has been extended to the chemical alloy [Fe(Htrz)2.95(NH2trz)0.05](ClO4)2 in order t…

Effect of over the counter mouthwashes with and without alcohol on sorption and solubility of bulk fill resins

2020

Background Composites sorption and solubility can be precursors of several chemical and physical processes, which lead to deleterious effects on the polymer structure. This study evaluated the effect of mouthwashes with and without alcohol on the sorption and solubility of conventional and low viscosity bulk fill resins. Material and Methods Four types of Bulk Fill resins (Filtek™ Bulk Fill, X-tra Fil, Filtek™ Bulk Fill Flow and X-tra Base) were submitted to the following mouthwashes: Listerine Cool Mint and Periogard (containing alcohol) and Listerine Zero and Periogard (alcohol-free). The specimens were stored in the mouthwashes for seven days. Solubility and sorption tests were performed…

Determination of χ from liquid-liquid phase data in ternary polymer systems (solvent/polymer/polymer) with hydrogen bonding

2008

Two different models accounting for the dependences of χ and g interaction parameters on both temperature and composition have been applied to different ternary polymer systems (TPS) solvent(1)/polymer(2)/polymer(3). The ana- lyzed TPS have consisted on ten different polymer mixtures in chloroform as common solvent that can specifically interact via hydrogen bond. Experimental ternary phase diagrams determined by liquid chromatography were taken from literature. The application of the two models to the experimental data have served to obtain χij and gij interaction parameters for all the binary ij (ij = 12, 13, 23) interactions established between the three components of the system, with si…

Impact of operation condition on temperature distribution in single cell of polymer electrolyte fuel cell operated at higher temperature than usual

2016

For improving performance of the stationary Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell (PEFC) system, the cell operating temperature up to 90°C will be preferred in Japan during the period from 2020 to 2030. To understand the operation of the PEFC system under relatively high temperature conditions, detail heat and mass transfer analysis is required. The main focus of this study is to analyze the PEFC performance under operational conditions, such as initial operational temperature of cell (Tini), relative humidity of supply gas, and the cathode gas type, temperature distribution in a cell of PEFC (using Nafion membrane) under relatively higher operating temperature conditions. The in-plane temperature …

PLLA/PLA scaffolds prepared via Thermally Induced Phase Separation (TIPS): tuning of properties and biodegradability

2008

Foams for tissue engineering applications were prepared via thermally induced phase separation (TIPS). Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA) and blends of PLLA with PLA in different proportions were used (100/0, 90/10, 75/25, 50/50, 0/100 PLLA/PLA wt/wt) starting from ternary systems where dioxane was the solvent and water the non-solvent. Morphology was evaluated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (average pore size and interconnection) and the void fraction was measured by means of Hg porosimetry. Foams apparent density was also evaluated (porosity ranges from 87% to 92%). Biodegradability was estimated in a body mimicking fluid. Results show that structure and morphology (in terms of average pore size …
