Two birds with one stone: dual grain-boundary and interface passivation enables >22% efficient inverted methylammonium-free perovskite solar cells
2021
Advancing inverted (pin) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is key to further enhance the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of flexible and perovskite-based tandem photovoltaics. Yet, the presence of defects at grain boundaries and in particular interfacial recombination at the perovskite/electron transporting layer interface induce severe non-radiative recombination losses, limiting the open-circuit voltage (VOC) and fill factor (FF) of PSCs in this architecture. In this work, we introduce a dual passivation strategy using the long chain alkylammonium salt phenethylammonium chloride (PEACl) both as an additive and for surface treatment to simultaneously passivate the grain b…
Cathodic electrodeposition of ZnCoO thin films
2008
We report on the characterization of ternary Zn1–xCoxO alloy crystalline films grown by electrodeposition onto FTO-coated substrates. The Zn1–xCoxO films have hexagonal wurtzite structure as shown by X-ray diffraction measurements. The Co incorporation into the ZnO lattice is confirmed by the presence of absorption peaks assigned to Co in trigonal crystal field. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy indicates that as-grown films have a considerable concentration of not-fully oxidized metallic Co in the surface that correlates with the O concentration in the surface. Finally, Raman measurements of as-grown films indicate that they are polycrystalline with grains of nanometric size showing short-r…
Solvent-Free Synthesis and Thin-Film Deposition of Cesium Copper Halides with Bright Blue Photoluminescence
2019
Non-toxic alternatives to lead halide perovskites are highly sought after for applications in optoelectronics. Blue-luminescent materials are especially demanded as they could be used to prepare white light-emitting diodes, with important potential applications in lighting systems. However, wide bandgap blue emitters with high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY) are typically more difficult to obtain as compared to green- or red-emitting ones. Here, we prepared two series of inorganic cesium copper halides, with the general formulas Cs3Cu2X5 and CsCu2X3 (X = Cl, Br, I, and mixtures thereof) by dry mechanochemical synthesis at room temperature. X-ray diffraction demonstrates quantitative…
Enhanced operational stability through interfacial modification by active encapsulation of perovskite solar cells
2020
Encapsulates are, in general, the passive components of any photovoltaic device that provides the required shielding from the externally stimulated degradation. Here we provide comprehensive physical insight depicting a rather non-trivial active nature, in contrast to the supposedly passive, atomic layer deposition (ALD) grown Al2O3 encapsulate layer on the hybrid perovskite [(FA0.83MA0.17)0.95Cs0.05PbI2.5Br0.5] photovoltaic device having the configuration: glass/FTO/SnO2/perovskite/spiro-OMeTAD/Au/(±) Al2O3. By combining various electrical characterization techniques, our experimental observations indicate that the ALD chemistry produces considerable enhancement of the electronic conductiv…
Investigation of Acetone Vapour Sensing Properties of a Ternary Composite of Doped Polyaniline, Reduced Graphene Oxide and Chitosan Using Surface Pla…
2020
This work reports the use of a ternary composite that integrates p-Toluene sulfonic acid doped polyaniline (PANI), chitosan, and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) as the active sensing layer of a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor. The SPR sensor is intended for application in the non-invasive monitoring and screening of diabetes through the detection of low concentrations of acetone vapour of less than or equal to 5 ppm, which falls within the range of breath acetone concentration in diabetic patients. The ternary composite film was spin-coated on a 50-nm-thick gold layer at 6000 rpm for 30 s. The structure, morphology and chemical composition of the ternary composite samples were character…
Evolution of the morphology and characterzation of compatibilized PBT/EVA blends prepared by reactive extrusion
2006
In this work, the possibility of preparing compatibilized blends of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) and an ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer by reactive extrusion in the presence of an ethylene acrylic acid copolymer (EAA) and a bisoxazoline compound (PBO) as compatibilization promoters has been studied. In addition, the evolution of the morphology of the blends under different annealing conditions in the presence and absence of the compatibilizing promoters has been studied. Binary blends of PBT and EVA showed behavior typical of incompatible blends with a gross morphology and bad mechanical performance. The situation was however different for ternary PBT/EVA/EAA and especially for…
Using Janus Nanoparticles To Trap Polymer Blend Morphologies during Solvent-Evaporation-Induced Demixing
2015
Using ternary blends of polystyrene (PS), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and Janus particles (JPs) with symmetric PS and PMMA hemispheres, we demonstrate the stabilization of dispersed and bicontinuous phase-separated morphologies by the interfacial adsorption of Janus particles during demixing upon solvent removal. The resulting blend morphology could be varied by changing the blend composition and JP loading. Increasing particle loading decreased the size of phase-separated domains, while altering the mixing ratio of the PS/PMMA homopolymers produced morphologies ranging from PMMA droplets in a PS matrix to PS droplets in a PMMA matrix. Notably, bicontinuous morphologies were obtained …
Polymeric scaffolds prepared via thermally induced phase separation: Tuning of structure and morphology
2008
Scaffolds suitable for tissue engineering applications like dermal reconstruction were prepared by Thermally Induced Phase Separation (TIPS) starting from a ternary solution PLLA/dioxane/water. The experimental protocol consisted of three consecutive steps, a first quench from the homogeneous solution to an appropriate demixing temperature (within the metastable region), a holding stage for a given residence time, and a final quench from the demixing temperature to a low temperature (within the unstable region). A large variety of morphologies, in terms of average pore size and interconnection, were obtained upon modifying the demixing time and temperature, owing to the interplay of nucleat…

Polymer solar cell based on ternary active layer consists of medium bandgap polymer and two non-fullerene acceptors
2020
Abstract An efficient PSCs consisting of a ternary active layer containing a medium bandgap conjugated polymer P and two well-known non-fullerene acceptors i.e. ITIC-m and Y6 was fabricated. An overall Power Conversion Efficiency (PCE) of about 15.13% was achieved, with the optimized ternary active layer consisting of 20 wt% of ITIC-m in acceptors i.e. P:ITIC-m:Y6 (1:0.3:1.2). This value is higher than that for the binary counter parts i.e. 12.10% and 13.16% for P:ITIC-m (1:1.5 w:w) and P:Y6 (1:1.5 w:w). The higher short circuit current density of the ternary active layer PSCs is related to the broader absorption spectra as compared to the binary active layer analogs. The open circuit volta…
