Empirical BAC factors method application to two real case studies in South Italy
2021
Abstract The application of Building Automation and Control (BAC) systems has many advantages. One of these is the reduction of the end-user electricity consumption and, if applied to lighting systems, the achievement of well-acknowledged benefits from daylight, such as productivity, health, visual comfort and well-being. Concerning the first aspect, the international Standard EN 15232 proposes the so-called BAC Factors (BF) method to assess the impact of BAC systems on the final energy consumption. The method provides a simplified estimation of the energy savings due to automation in buildings and questions arise on its applicability in some situations. For this reason, the authors have ca…
Transportation Processes Modelling in Congested Road Networks
2019
In this chapter, the models of different transportation processes in a congested road network are considered. The first section is devoted to a signal control problem formulated as a bi-level optimization program. An analytical solution for a two-commodity linear road network offers a practical and illustrative result to be taken into consideration by decision-makers in this sphere. A new algorithm for OD-matrix estimation based on the dual traffic assignment problem is described in the second section. The third section is devoted to the problem of emission reduction. The approaches presented in this book are shown to be well-implemented for coping with such problems. The time-depended vehi…
Spatial risks and complex systems: methodological perspectives
2007
Research on risk and industrial catastrophes question the complexity theories. Besides the concepts of complexity which lead us to reconsider concepts of risk, hazard and vulnerability, we propose to think about more practical aspects, for example the modelling of human behaviour in crisis situations. The link between concepts as critical self-organization, emergence, bifurcation, and the methods in the Distributed Artificial Intelligence (DAI) used to model them is however difficult. In this paper, we present ongoing analysis on the key concepts of risk science, such as hazards and catastrophes. We propose to enrich them with complex systems theories. First, we present methodological persp…
Autonomous agent system using dispatching rules in the negotiation protocol
2002
In this paper, the most important results obtained by the simulated application of autonomous agent paradigms to a. real factory are presented. The classical rules of dispatching are compared with the autonomous agents approach. In particular, the possibility of redesigning the negotiation rules in terms of currency in order to take into account even non-time-related costs is considered. Finally, a new project on the effective application of the autonomous agent system to a test bed, modelling a simplified firm, is proposed.
Multi‐criteria decision‐making approach for modular enterprise resource planning sorting problems
2021
[EN] Implementing Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems is currently recognized as a best practice with wide associated possibilities of business improvement for companies. Integrating these kinds of systems with business processes in the most efficient way requires to endeavour as much as possible simplifications for final users, which can be pursued by optimizing crucial software characteristics. The present article proposes a novel Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) approach to deal with such an issue. Specifically, the ELECTRE (ELimination Et Choix Traduisant la REalite) TRI technique is suggested to assign ERP modules into predefined and ordered categories according to maintain…
Monitoring managerial efficiency in the performing arts: A regional theatres network perspective
2006
Managerial efficiency within the performing arts programming can be understood as the technical efficiency of transforming the resources cultural managers have available into a determined cultural output. Through this explanation different conceptions on the finished performance product it leads us to select two different output variables (number of performances, and number of attendances). In this way, three different models are considered regarding those conceptual points of view. Data on the Circu¨ıt Teatral Valencia`, a Spanish regional theatres network, is used to develop empirically the concept of Managerial Efficiency and set up a framework to allow us to monitor it. Detection of local tourism systems by threshold accepting
2015
Despite the importance of tourism as a leading industry in the development of a country’s economy, there is a lack of criteria and methodologies for the detection, promotion, and governance of local tourism systems. We propose a quantitative approach for the detection of local tourism systems the size of which is optimal with respect to geographical, economic, and demographical criteria: we formulate the problem as an optimisation problem and we solve it by a metaheuristic approach; then we compare the obtained results with standard clustering approaches and with an exact optimisation solver. Results show that our approach requires low computational times to provide results that are better …
Forecasting Adverse Weather Situations in the Road Network
2016
Weather is an important factor that affects traffic flow and road safety. Adverse weather situations affect the driving conditions directly; hence, drivers must be informed about the weather conditions downstream to adapt their driving. In the framework of intelligent transport systems, several systems have been developed to know the weather situations and inform drivers. However, these systems do not forecast weather in advance, and they need the support of road operators to inform drivers. This paper presents a new autonomous system to forecast weather conditions in a short time and to give users the information obtained. The system uses a set of algorithms and rules to determine the weat…
Life Cycle Assessment of organic and conventional apple supply chains in the North of Italy
2017
Abstract This paper compares the energy and environmental impacts of organic and conventional apples cultivated in the North of Italy, by applying the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. The authors examined the supply chain of apples, including the input of raw materials and energy sources, the farming step, the post-harvest processes and the distribution of apples to the final users. The paper develops two original contributions: 1) it enhances the limited number of studies on LCA applied to apples; 2) it compares organic and conventional apples produced in lands characterized by the same climatic conditions, to evaluate which of the two products is more competitive from an energy an…
