Collimation of Target Induced Halo Following MAGIX at MESA

2019

The Mainz Energy-recovering Superconducting Accelerator (MESA) will be an electron accelerator allowing operation in energy-recovery linac (ERL) mode. It provides the opportunity to operate scattering experiments at energies of ~100 MeV with thin gas-targets. The MESA Internal Gas Target Experiment (MAGIX) aims to operate windowless jet targets and different gases up to Xenon to search for possible dark photon interactions, to precisely measure the magnetic proton radius and astrophysical S-factors. Investigations on the impact of the target on beam dynamics and beam losses are required for machine safety and to examine limits to ERL operation. The goal of this work is to understand target …

Hidden entanglement in the presence of random telegraph dephasing noise

2012

Entanglement dynamics of two noninteracting qubits, locally affected by random telegraph noise at pure dephasing, exhibits revivals. These revivals are not due to the action of any nonlocal operation, thus their occurrence may appear paradoxical since entanglement is by definition a nonlocal resource. We show that a simple explanation of this phenomenon may be provided by using the (recently introduced) concept of "hidden" entanglement, which signals the presence of entanglement that may be recovered with the only help of local operations.

Control of quantum systems

1999

We propose a new control method for systems whose evolution is described by Schrödinger's equation (quantum dynamics). The goal of the control is to induce modifications of observable quantities — with possible effects at mesoscopic or macroscopic levels — by modifying the potential at the microscopic level. We illustrate the feasibility of the approach on a harmonic oscillator system.

Search for excited leptons in Z0 decay

1990

Due to the severity of system-wide power outages, though their probability of occurrence is slight, regulatory authorities require that a system restoration plan be drawn up and kept up to date at all times. The power outage that affected northeastern North America in 2003 proved the need for such a requirement. The particular structure of Hydro-Quebec's power system requires the use of a highly specific system restoration procedure. The daily preparation of the system restoration plan is based on a strategy whose application requires that a restoration sequence be drawn up that uses available equipment, the electrical behavior of which has been validated using appropriate studies. Over the…

Energy distribution of ternaryαparticles in spontaneous fission ofCf252

2008

The energy distribution of the ternary $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ particles in spontaneous fission of $^{252}\mathrm{Cf}$ was measured. For the first time an energy threshold as low as 1 MeV was reached. The experiment used an array of unshielded silicon detectors measuring energy and time-of-flight (TOF) of ternary particles in coincidence with fission fragments. The TOF resolution of the system was sufficient for clear separation of $^{6}\mathrm{He}$ and tritons from $^{4}\mathrm{He}$. The statistics were adequate to extract the $^{6}\mathrm{He}$/$^{4}\mathrm{He}$ yield ratio. For both $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ and $^{6}\mathrm{He}$, an excess in the yield (as compared to a Gaussian shape) was observe…

New gas-filled mode of the large-acceptance spectrometer VAMOS

2010

A new gas-filled operation mode of the large-acceptance spectrometer VAMOS at GANIL is reported. A beam rejection factor greater than 10(10) is obtained for the Ca-40+Sm-150 system at 196 MeV. The unprecedented transmission efficiency for the evaporation residues produced in this reaction is estimated to be around 80% for alpha x n channels and above 95% for x ny p channels. A detailed study of the performance of the gas-filled VAMOS and future developments are discussed. This new operation mode opens avenues to explore the potential of fusion reactions in various kinematics. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The X-ray Facility at LAX in Palermo

1996

A description is given of the X-ray facility installed at LAX (Laboratorio per Sperimentazioni con Radiazioni X), jointly operated in Palermo by the DEAF (Department of Energy and Physics Applications) of the University of Palermo and the IFCAT (Institute of Cosmic Physics and Informatics) of the Italian National Research Council. The X-rays are produced by bombarding a target with energized electrons up to 60 keV. Depending on the material of the target, characteristic fluorescence lines as well as continuous bremsstrahlung is emitted. The X-ray beam has an operational energy range of 0,1–25 keV with a flux of 1010–1012 photons/sr · s; the beam, collimated on a length of 10,5 m, has a diam…

The MuPix high voltage monolithic active pixel sensor for the Mu3e experiment

2015

Mu3e is a novel experiment searching for charged lepton flavor violation in the rare decay μ → eee. In order to reduce background by up to 16 orders of magnitude, decay vertex position, decay time and particle momenta have to be measured precisely. A pixel tracker based on 50 μm thin high voltage monolithic active pixel sensors (HV-MAPS) in a magnetic field will deliver precise vertex and momentum information. Test beam results like an excellent efficiency of >99.5% and a time resolution of better than 16.6 ns obtained with the MuPix HV-MAPS chip developed for the Mu3e pixel tracker are presented.

Excitation power dependence of the Purcell effect in photonic crystal microcavity lasers with quantum wires

2013

The Purcell effect dependence on the excitation power is studied in photonic crystal microcavity lasers embedding InAs/InP quantum wires. In the case of non-lasing modes, the Purcell effect has low dependence on the optical pumping, attributable to an exciton dynamics combining free and localized excitons. In the case of lasing modes, the influence of the stimulated emission makes ambiguous the determination of the Purcell factor. We have found that this ambiguity can be avoided by measuring the dependence of the decay time on the excitation power. These results provide insights in the determination of the Purcell factor in microcavity lasers. © 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.
