Informal Learning for Citizenship Building in Shared Struggles for Right: Cases of Political Solidarity Between Colombian and Spanish Organisations

2015

[EN]: Dominant discourses and practices in international cooperation have been characterised by depoliticisation and unequal power relationships. However, a number of more transformative experiences of cooperation also exist, where joint work between Northern and Southern social organisations is linked with a more political perspective. These kinds of experiences can be considered processes of informal learning in social action: through shared actions, strategies and frameworks and through interaction between organisations, institutions and the grassroots, informal and multidimensional learning processes occur in the people and organisations engaged. The study approaches four cases of netwo…

Nordic Cooperation in the Nuclear Safety Sector: High, Low, or Differentiated Integration?

2020

Nordic cooperation has been depicted as eroding due to the increased importance of EU-related cooperation and integration. However, scholars propose that longstanding Nordic networks, grounded in professions and located in the state administration, may prove to be more robust toward external changes. This article discusses this proposal by looking at Nordic cooperation between the national radiation protection and nuclear safety authorities in Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. The article maps behavioural perceptions of agency staff based on a dataset of 37 interviews to illustrate if the cooperation between the Nordic authorities is characterized by high integration, low integ…

Comparative Analysis Between Portugal and Spain

2021

This chapter comparatively analyzes Portugal and Spain in relation to the implementation of the IPSAS-based accounting system as two European continental countries embedded in the Napoleonic administrative tradition and considered “latecomers” in the NPM reforms. It adds knowledge about the differences in the harmonization process and in the operationalization of the new accounting system in these particular contexts. Main findings show that IPSAS and the IFRS-based business accounting system have been important references for the new public sector accounting system in both countries. On the other hand, although Spain is more experienced in operationalizing the new IPSAS-based accounting sy…

Scientific production in clinical medicine and international collaboration networks in South American countries

2012

Background: International collaboration is increasingly used in biomedical research. Aim: To describe the characteristics of scientific production in Latin America and the main international collaboration networks for the period 2000 to 2009. Material and Methods: Search for papers generated in Latin American countries in the Clinical Medicine database of ISI Web of Knowledge v.4.10 - Current Contents Connect. The country of origin of the corresponding author was considered the producing country of the paper. International collaboration was analyzed calculating the number of countries that contributed to the generation of a particular paper. Collaboration networks were graphed to determine …

Outcome after mitral valve operations with depressed left ventricular function.

2012

We retrospectively investigated 42 patients (27 men, 15 women; mean age, 67 years) with severe mitral valve incompetence and endstage cardiomyopathy (ejection fraction <30%) who were operated on between January 2002 and March 2009. Of these, 14 were in New York Heart Association class IV, and 27 were in class III. The etiology was ischemic in 18 patients and idiopathic dilated in 24. Mitral valve repair was performed in 25 patients, and 17 had mitral valve replacement. The mean logistic EuroSCORE was 33.41. The mean follow-up was 44.52 months. There were no perioperative deaths. Three patients died within 30 days postoperatively. Thirty-day mortality was lower than predicted by EuroSCOR…

External iliac artery pseudoaneurysm complicating renal transplantation

2009

Objective: To assess the etiology, management and outcome of iliac pseudoaneurysms following renal transplantation. Methods: Eleven patients who underwent repair between 1982 and 2007 were identified. Five (Group 1) presented pseudoaneurysm at the anastomosis of the donor renal and native iliac arteries, and six (Group 2) presented iliac pseudoaneurysm following transplant nephrectomy. Intraoperative cultures and immunohistochemical examinations were obtained from all surgical cases to determine the existence of a relationship between infection or transplant rejection and pseudoaneurysm formation. Results: Endovascular repair (EVR) was used to treat three patients, while eight patients unde…

Value of echocardiography in patient follow-up after surgically corrected type A aortic dissection.

2001

Background To identify patients (pts) at risk of late complications, follow-up after surgery for type A aortic dissection is essential. We assessed the value of echocardiography to monitor patients after surgery for type A aortic dissection. Methods 80 out of 108 pts operated between 1989 and 1999 for type A aortic dissection survived surgery. 62 pts with at least one TEE, CT or MRI examinations during follow-up were included in this study. All pts had transthoracic echocardiography (TTE), 53 transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), 51 had CT, and 39 had MRI. Results At the first follow-up, 12 of 48 pts with aortic valve sparing surgery presented with aortic insufficiency >I degrees detected…

New rules on driver licensing for patients with obstructive sleep apnoea: EU Directive 2014/85/EU.

2016

The widespread recognition that obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) represents an important risk factor for motor vehicle accidents (MVA), which is reversed by successful therapy with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), has led to a revision of annex III of the European Union (EU) directive on driving licences that is subject to mandatory implementation by all member states from December 31, 2015 [1]. This directive was the result of recommendations from a working group established by the Transport and Mobility Directorate of the European Commission in 2012 [2]. The directive states [1] Joint ERS/ESRS working group on the EU directive on issuing driving licences in obstructive sleep apno…

Hereditary angiodema: a current state-of-the-art review, VII: Canadian Hungarian 2007 International Consensus Algorithm for the Diagnosis, Therapy, a…

2008

Background We published the Canadian 2003 International Consensus Algorithm for the Diagnosis, Therapy, and Management of Hereditary Angioedema (HAE; C1 inhibitor [C1-INH] deficiency) in 2004. Objective To ensure that this consensus remains current. Methods In collaboration with the Canadian Network of Rare Blood Disorder Organizations, we held the second Canadian Consensus discussion with our international colleagues in Toronto, Ontario, on February 3, 2006, and reviewed its content at the Fifth C1 Inhibitor Deficiency Workshop in Budapest on June 2, 2007. Papers were presented by international investigators, and this consensus algorithm approach resulted. Results This consensus algorithm …
