Pre-conceptual design of EU DEMO balance of plant systems: Objectives and challenges
2021
Abstract The European Research Roadmap to the Realisation of Fusion Energy foresees that the DEMO reactor is going to succeed ITER in the pathway towards the exploitation of nuclear fusion, achieving long plasma operation time, demonstrating tritium self-sufficiency and producing net electric output on an industrial scale. Therefore, its design must be more oriented towards the Balance of Plant (BoP) than it is in ITER. Since the early pre-conceptual phase of the DEMO project, emphasis has been laid on identifying the main requirements affecting the overall architecture of the BoP. For instance, specific efforts and proper solutions have been envisaged to cope with the pulsed nature of the …
Defining the Concepts of Organization, Economic Organization and Stabilizer from the Perspective of Complex Systems
2014
Abstract This paper is a theoretical investigation that sets forth a scientific debate on the concepts of organization, economic organization, and stabilizer from the perspective of complex systems. By defining these concepts, the paper aims at increasing the intelligibility of social and economic phenomena. In formulating the definitions, we considered the following criteria: the adequacy criterion, the consistency criterion and the independence criterion. The paper is part of a larger study on the economic organization and the paradigm of the living logical system.
A novel identification procedure from ambient vibration data
2020
AbstractAmbient vibration modal identification, also known as Operational Modal Analysis, aims to identify the modal properties of a structure based on vibration data collected when the structure is under its operating conditions, i.e., no initial excitation or known artificial excitation. This procedure for testing and/or monitoring historic buildings, is particularly attractive for civil engineers concerned with the safety of complex historic structures. However, since the external force is not recorded, the identification methods have to be more sophisticated and based on stochastic mechanics. In this context, this contribution will introduce an innovative ambient identification method b…
Developing hand-worn input and haptic support for real-world target finding
2019
Locating places in cities is typically facilitated by handheld mobile devices, which draw the visual attention of the user on the screen of the device instead of the surroundings. In this research, we aim at strengthening the connection between people and their surroundings through enabling mid-air gestural interaction with real-world landmarks and delivering information through audio to retain users' visual attention on the scene. Recent research on gesture-based and haptic techniques for such purposes has mainly considered handheld devices that eventually direct users' attention back to the devices. We contribute a hand-worn, mid-air gestural interaction design with directional vibrotacti…
A Software Package for a Serum Bank Management
1979
A serum-bank is a collection of human serum samples coming from different locations (in our case Children Hospital, schools, factories, town departemens), allocated in some archives. Principal users of a such data-bank are, of course, physicians and biologists that are mainly interested in statistical analysis (computation of averages, variances factor analysis, etc.) of immunological and epidemiological relevance, in order to investigate about some haematochemical parameters common to some selected subset of the archives [1], [2].
Object-Oriented Operational Semantics
2016
Operational semantics is one way of providing meaning to an executable language. On a high level of abstraction, operational semantics means to define an interpreter or an abstract machine for the language. In this article, we review the concept of operational semantics in the scope of meta-model-based language definitions and identify challenges and issues. We provide a clean conceptual approach using an object-oriented runtime environment and state change operations, which relies on an underlying abstract virtual machine. We present the approach using a sample language.
A risk evaluation framework for the best maintenance strategy: the case of a marine salt manufacture firm
2020
Highlights • This paper proposes a MCDM framework to support risk evaluation for maintenance activities. • The ANP is proposed to select the best maintenance strategy on the basis of real systems’ features. • The ELECTRE III is used to prioritise the main risks related to the interventions of the selected maintenance policy. • The proposed framework is applied to a core subsystem of a real-world marine salt manufacture firm.
Efficient anomaly detection on sampled data streams with contaminated phase I data
2020
International audience; Control chart algorithms aim to monitor a process over time. This process consists of two phases. Phase I, also called the learning phase, estimates the normal process parameters, then in Phase II, anomalies are detected. However, the learning phase itself can contain contaminated data such as outliers. If left undetected, they can jeopardize the accuracy of the whole chart by affecting the computed parameters, which leads to faulty classifications and defective data analysis results. This problem becomes more severe when the analysis is done on a sample of the data rather than the whole data. To avoid such a situation, Phase I quality must be guaranteed. The purpose…
Statistics-driven Development of OBD Systems: An Overview
2006
Automotive on-board diagnostic (OBD) systems are designed to keep critical components under control during vehicle functioning, and to alert the driver in case of severe malfunctions. OBD systems aimed at reducing polluting emissions are mandatory on new motor vehicles. Some research projects conducted in cooperation between universities and the automotive industry have been quite successful in terms of knowledge advancement and industrial gain. An updated overview of the adopted methodologies and results obtained are given in this article. Such results can be valuable for both theorists and practitioners, since they witness the use of statistics as a powerful catalyst of technical progress…
UbiRoad: Semantic Middleware for Context-Aware Smart Road Environments
2010
A smart road environment is such a traffic environment that is equipped with all necessary facilities to enable seamless mobile service provisioning to the users. However, advanced sensors and network architectures deployed within the traffic environment are insufficient to make mobile service provisioning autonomous and proactive, thus minimizing drivers’ distraction during their presence in the environment. For that, an Intelligent Transportation System, which is operating on top of numerous sensor and access networks and governing the process of mobile services provisioning to the users in self-managed and proactive way, must be deployed. Specifically, such system should provide solution…
