Single point incremental forming: An assessment of the progress and technology trends from 2005 to 2015

The last decade has seen considerable interest in flexible forming processes. Among the upcoming flexible forming techniques, one that has captured a lot of interest is single point incremental forming (SPIF), where a flat sheet is incrementally deformed into a desired shape by the action of a tool that follows a defined toolpath conforming to the final part geometry. Even if more reliable than the past, the performance of modern manufacturing systems is still affected by machine’s deteriorations and breakdowns. Process mechanics in Friction Stir Extrusion of magnesium alloys chips through experiments and numerical simulation

Abstract Friction Stir Extrusion (FSE) is a novel process designed to directly recycle machining chips. An experimental campaign was carried out on AZ31 milling chips using variations in extrusion ratio, force and tool rotation rate. The process mechanics were studied and correlated to the material flow, which was elucidated through use of a copper marker. A 3D, Lagrangian, thermo-mechanically coupled dedicated numerical model was set up and validated through temperature measurements. The combination of experimental and numerical results permitted to reconstruct the complex 3D material flow induced by tool rotation and plunge into the extrusion billet chamber.

Enhancement of mechanical properties of FSWed AA7075 lap joints through in-situ fabrication of MMC

Abstract Friction Stir Processing (FSP) has been demonstrated feasible to create local Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) in light alloys matrix. In this research, local MMCs were produced contextually to the weld using Friction Stir Welding (FSW). SiC particles were added to AA7075 lap joints by creating a proper groove on the top surface of the bottom sheet. Different welds were produced with increasing number of tool passes. The effect of the multiple passes was investigated through shear tests, macro and micro observations, average grain size and microhardness measurements. Influence of processing parameters and initial temper on Friction Stir Extrusion of 2050 aluminum alloy

Abstract Friction Stir Extrusion is an innovative production technology that enables direct wire production via consolidation and extrusion of metal chips or solid billets. During the process, a rotating die is plunged into a cylindrical chamber containing the material to be extruded. The stirring action of the tool produces plastic flow in the extrusion chamber, densifying and heating the charge so that finally, fully dense rods are extruded. Experiments have been carried out in order to investigate the influence of process parameters and initial temper of the base material on the process variables and on the extrudates’ mechanical properties.

Abstract Solid state recycling refers to a group of processes allowing direct recycling of metals scraps into semi-finished product. Abstract Ultrafine grained (UFG) materials are of great potential in industry due to their enhanced mechanical strength and other promising features, such as ability to superplastic deformation or excellent corrosion resistance. Abstract In this paper we consider the Double-Row Facility Layout Problem (DRFLP). Given a set of departments and pairwise transport weights between them the DRFLP asks for a non-overlapping arrangement of the departments along both sides of a common path such that the weighted sum of the center-to-center distances between the departments is minimized. Abstract The glass cutting problem proposed for the ROADEF 2018 challenge is a two-dimensional, three-stage guillotine cutting process, with an additional cut to obtain pieces in some specific situations.
