Decompression induces inflammation but do not modify cell proliferation and apoptosis in odontogenic keratocyst
2022
Background Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is a development cyst, of odontogenic origin, that differs from other entities by its infiltrating and aggressive biological behavior. Among conservative treatments for large lesions, surgical decompression stands out, with a variable recurrence rate. Aim: To evaluate the histological effects of decompression treatment on OKC, including cell proliferation and apoptosis of epithelial cyst. Material and Methods 21 OKC cases were included. Samples were taken before and after surgical decompression for histological evaluation and immunohistochemical staining of Ki-67, MCM4/7, Bax and Bcl2. Data were analyzed and compared using Student’s t and Wilcoxon tes…
Use of cbct in the endodontic management of a second mandibular premolar with three roots : clinical case
2022
Background Reports and studies on dental anatomy describe variations in the morphology, number and shape of the roots and root canals, with the mandibular premolars being one of the dental groups with special complexity. In the bibliographic review published on the morphology of mandibular second premolars, the presence of three roots being extremely rare, finding differences according to the ethnic group studied. The aim of this case is to describe an unusual case of the anatomy of a mandibular second premolar. Material and Methods A 59-year-old male patient presented with pain in the right mandibular second premolar. After taking the clinical history and the examination, he was diagnosed …
Bond strength of self-adhesive resin cement to dentin using different adhesion protocols
2022
Background The treatment of dentin before the use of self-adhesive cements is still a crucial point to achieve the best bond strength values. The objective of this study was to evaluate the bond strength between dentin and composite resin using different adhesion strategies with self-adhesive resin cement. Material and Methods Forty healthy third human molars were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 10): CA (control); application of self-adhesive cement (Rely X U200, 3M ESPE), AD + CA: only application of conventional adhesive (Adper Single Bond 2, 3M ESPE) + self-adhesive cement, AC + AD + CA; conditioning with 37% phosphoric acid for 15 seconds + application of conventional adhesive + sel…
Criteria and treatment decisions in the management of deep caries lesions: Is there endodontic overtreatment?
2018
Background The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic criteria and treatment decisions in the management of deep caries lesions (DCLs). The null hypothesis tested was that DCLs are managed according to the current scientific evidence. Material and Methods A total of 288 dentists were contacted directly or by mail, and 125 (43%) were included in the study. Dentists were requested to answer a questionnaire about the routine approach to the diagnosis and treatment of DCLs. Logistic regression analyses were carried out to calculate odds ratios (OR). Results Pulp sensitivity tests were used by 65% of dentists when assessing pulpal health in cases of DCLs, particularly those who had …
