Following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, the primary goal of treatment is to exclude the vascular malformation from the intracranial circulation, while preserving the parent artery. In unruptured aneurysms, the decision whether to treat or observe the malformation is made on a case-by-case basis. Methods: The literature search was performed in the SCI-E. Articles were selected for 2001-2010 for "respiratory system" using the descriptors "smok*" and "tobac*". Abstract Background Patients undergoing surgery for esophageal cancer have a high risk for postoperative deterioration of lung function and pulmonary complications. This is partly due to one-lung ventilation during thoracotomy. This often accounts for prolonged stay on intensive care units, delayed postoperative reconvalescence and reduced quality of life. Intracerebral Hemorrhage (IH) is an important cause of secondary brain injury in neurosurgical patients. Early identification and treatment improve neurologic outcome. We have tested Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) as an alternative noninvasive diagnostic tool compared to CT-Scans to detect IH. We prospectively studied 212 patients with neurologic symptoms associated with intracranial pathology before performing a CT-scan. NIRS signals indicated pathologies in 181 cases (sensitivity 0.96; specificity 0.29). In a subgroup of subdural hematomas NIRS detected 45 of 46 hematomas (sensitivity 0.96; specificity 0.79). Arterio-venous malformations in childhood: Clinical presentation, results after operative treatment and long-term follow-up

In a series of 182 arterio-venous malformations (AVM) recently published [8] we found 33 children aged 1 to 16 years. In 28 cases, the admitting condition was hemorrhage. For 31 AVMs total excision was possible. We observed one postoperative death accounting for a mortality of 3%. All children but two were followed-up by personal examination. Two were not able to work due to severe neurological deficits and seven had not been able to get into their intended occupation.
