Finite propagation speed for solutions of the wave equation on metric graphs

2012

We provide a class of self-adjoint Laplace operators on metric graphs with the property that the solutions of the associated wave equation satisfy the finite propagation speed property. The proof uses energy methods, which are adaptions of corresponding methods for smooth manifolds.

FISCALITY – RELEVANT FACTOR INFLUENCING THE BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT

2013

Main tool for macroeconomic management - fiscal policy consists in establishing the levels of taxation and spending in order to influence macroeconomic performance. Fiscal policy, promoted by the government authorities of any contemporary state, is directed usually to achieving microeconomic and macroeconomic goals deriving from the roles the state must fulfill in the economy, respectively the allocative role, distributive, regulatory and the stabilizer role. Governmental authorities, through the production and supply of public goods that are financed at the expense of taxes or duties, or on the public debt, affect both individuals’ utility functions and production functions of economic age…

Quantum Nekhoroshev Theorem for Quasi-Periodic Floquet Hamiltonians

1998

A quantum version of Nekhoroshev estimates for Floquet Hamiltonians associated to quasi-periodic time dependent perturbations is developped. If the unperturbed energy operator has a discrete spectrum and under finite Diophantine conditions, an effective Floquet Hamiltonian with pure point spectrum is constructed. For analytic perturbations, the effective time evolution remains close to the original Floquet evolution up to exponentially long times. We also treat the case of differentiable perturbations.

Eigenfunction expansions for time dependent hamiltonians

2008

We describe a generalization of Floquet theory for non periodic time dependent Hamiltonians. It allows to express the time evolution in terms of an expansion in eigenfunctions of a generalized quasienergy operator. We discuss a conjecture on the extension of the adiabatic theorem to this type of systems, which gives a procedure for the physical preparation of Floquet states. *** DIRECT SUPPORT *** A3418380 00004

Time-resolved velocity measurements in a magnetic micromixer

2015

Abstract Mixing efficiency is lower in passive micromixers due to viscous forces and substantial research effort is focused on designing high performance micromixers. Active micromixers make use of external forces to enhance mixing efficiency. Among these, magnetic forces are popular because they are non-contact and therefore the micromixer design can be kept simple. Laser-based diagnostic tools have great potential in providing multi-parameter information in microfluidics research on mixing. MicroPIV experiments are performed to investigate the transient flow field in a magnetic micromixer undergoing labyrinthine instability. Velocity and interface front information is extracted from a seq…

An operator view on alliances in politics

2015

We introduce the concept of an {\em operator decision making technique} and apply it to a concrete political problem: should a given political party form a coalition or not? We focus on the situation of three political parties, and divide the electorate into four groups: partisan supporters of each party and a group of undecided voters. We consider party-party interactions of two forms: shared or differing alliance attitudes. Our main results consist of time-dependent decision functions for each of the three parties, and their asymptotic values, i.e., their final decisions on whether or not to form a coalition.

Percorsi relazionali nelle comunità. Minori, buone prassi e rappresentazioni a confronto.

2014

The aim of this thesis was to analyze the context of residential communities for young offenders (Part I) and to analyze the influence of social representations in adolescents and educators (Part II). The first part offers two levels of study on adolescents and on the organizational structure of the community. Adolescents show many problematic levels in the identified variables (Experiences of neglect and abuse during childhood, Attachment Styles, Self-Esteem, Interpersonal Relations, Behavioural problems). No differences between groups of young differentiating according to the reason for placement in community were found. Analysis of community (101 educators from 20 different households) w…

Singular factorizations, self-adjoint extensions, and applications to quantum many-body physics

2006

We study self-adjoint operators defined by factorizing second order differential operators in first order ones. We discuss examples where such factorizations introduce singular interactions into simple quantum mechanical models like the harmonic oscillator or the free particle on the circle. The generalization of these examples to the many-body case yields quantum models of distinguishable and interacting particles in one dimensions which can be solved explicitly and by simple means. Our considerations lead us to a simple method to construct exactly solvable quantum many-body systems of Calogero-Sutherland type.

Frequency domain identification of the fractional Kelvin-Voigt’s parameters for viscoelastic materials

2019

Abstract In this work, a new innovative method is used to identify the parameters of fractional Kelvin-Voigt constitutive equation. These parameters are: the order of fractional derivation operator, 0 ≤ α ≤ 1, the coefficient of fractional derivation operator, CV, and the stiffness of the model, KV. A particular dynamic test setup is developed to capture the experimental data. Its outputs are time histories of the excitation and excited accelerations. The investigated specimen is a polymeric cubic silicone gel material known as α-gel. Two kinds of experimental excitations are used as random frequencies and constant frequency harmonic excitations. In this study, experimental frequency respon…
