Influence of nerve of origin and tumor size of vestibular schwannoma on dynamic posturography findings.

2006

Condition 5-score (C5S) and vestibular ratio (VER) correlate, but condition-6-score (C6S) and mean overall balance score (MOBS) do not, with the size of an inferior vestibular nerve (IVN) vestibular schwannoma (VS). In IVN VS patients the visual system plays a major role in the maintenance of postural stability. To test whether the size of a superior vestibular nerve (SVN) or IVN VS, as measured on MRI scans, correlates with computerized dynamic platform posturography (CDPP) findings and whether CDPP findings could preoperatively predict the nerve of origin of the VS.This was a retrospective study. Seventy-five consecutive VS patients were evaluated. C5S, C6S, VER, and MOBS were evaluated. S…

The topographic diagnosis of acquired nystagmus in brainstem disorders.

2002

Evidence is presented for a clinical classification of central vestibular syndromes according to the three major planes of action of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR): yaw, pitch, and roll. The plane-specific vestibular syndromes are determined by ocular motor, postural, and perceptual signs. Yaw plane signs are horizontal nystagmus, horizontal past pointing, rotational and lateral body falls to the right or to the left, and horizontal deviation of perceived straight-ahead. Pitch plane signs are upbeat/downbeat nystagmus, forward/backward tilts and falls, and upward or downward deviations of the perceived horizontal. Roll plane signs are torsional nystagmus, skew deviation, ocular torsion, …

Adénocarcinome de la glande lacrymale dans un rétinoblastome bilatéral traité avec radiothérapie externe : à propos d’un cas

2011

This clinical case report describes the clinical findings and diagnosis of lacrimal gland adenocarcinoma that developed 20 years after external beam radiotherapy in the treatment of bilateral retinoblastoma. Visual acuity, slit lamp biomicroscopy, fundus color photography, nuclear magnetic resonance, lateral orbitotomy and histological analysis are described.

Temporal multiplexing with adaptive optics for simultaneous vision.

2016

We present and test a methodology for generating simultaneous vision with a deformable mirror that changed shape at 50 Hz between two vergences: 0 D (far vision) and −2.5 D (near vision). Different bifocal designs, including toric and combinations of spherical aberration, were simulated and assessed objectively. We found that typical corneal aberrations of a 60-year-old subject changes the shape of objective through-focus curves of a perfect bifocal lens. This methodology can be used to investigate subjective visual performance for different multifocal contact or intraocular lens designs.

Kosteneffektivitätsanalyse der Versorgung von Kataraktpatienten mit monofokalen Intraokularlinsen aus Sicht der Leistungserstatter

2003

BACKGROUND Data on the cost effectiveness of cataract surgery with respect to the German statutory health insurance system are hardly available. Hence the increase in visual acuity as primary efficacy endpoint, order of posterior capsule opacification as primary complication endpoint and direct cost for supplementation with monofocal intraocular lenses have been assessed via meta-analyses to evaluate the procedure's cost effectiveness from the perspective of the German statutory health insurance system. MATERIAL AND METHODS Using the medical internet database MEDLINE two meta-analyses on publications between 1995 and 2002 were carried out, one estimating the gained increase in visual acuity…

Analysis of the possible benefits of aspheric intraocular lenses: review of the literature.

2008

We reviewed recently published studies that analyzed the visual and optical quality in eyes with different spherical and aspheric intraocular lenses (IOLs). Recent studies focused on visual quality metrics, such as visual acuity and contrast sensitivity, under photopic and mesopic lighting conditions and optical metrics, such as wavefront aberrations, especially spherical aberration. The results in this review were used in an attempt to understand whether there is a visual and/or optical benefit of implanting aspheric IOLs over implanting spherical IOLs.

Changes in visual function and retinal structure in the progression of Alzheimer's disease

2019

Background Alzheimer's Disease (AD) can cause degeneration in the retina and optic nerve either directly, as a result of amyloid beta deposits, or secondarily, as a result of the degradation of the visual cortex. These effects raise the possibility that tracking ophthalmologic changes in the retina can be used to assess neurodegeneration in AD. This study aimed to detect retinal changes and associated functional changes in three groups of patients consisting of AD patients with mild disease, AD patients with moderate disease and healthy controls by using non-invasive psychophysical ophthalmological tests and optical coherence tomography (OCT). Methods We included 39 patients with mild AD, 2…

Visual performance with multifocal intraocular lenses

2004

Abstract Objective To evaluate distance and near visual performance under bright (photopic) and dim (mesopic) conditions in patients who had undergone uncomplicated cataract extraction with multifocal or monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. Design Prospective, nonrandomized, masked, comparative, observational case series. Participants Thirty-two eyes of 32 patients after zonal-progressive multifocal IOL implantation (Allergan Medical Optics Array SA-40N) and 32 eyes of 32 age-matched patients after monofocal IOL implantation (Allergan Medical Optics SI-40NB). Intervention All eyes underwent phacoemulsification and IOL implantation. Main outcome measures At 18 months after surgery,…

Objective and subjective evaluation of photic phenomena after monofocal and multifocal intraocular lens implantation11The authors have no commercial …

1999

Abstract Objective To objectively measure and compare halo, flicker, and glare disability in pseudophakic eyes with monofocal (MONO) and multifocal (MULTI) intraocular lenses (IOLs) with respect to the influence of corneal surface quality, astigmatism, and age. Design Prospective case series. Participants This clinical trial involved 28 eyes of 28 patients after small-incision cataract surgery with a MONO silicone IOL and 28 eyes of 28 patients with zonal-progressive silicone IOL. Intervention A computer program objectively determined halo, glare, and flicker. Corneal surface quality and astigmatism were measured using computerized videokeratography. Ray-tracing analysis was performed based…

Can Applications Designed to Evaluate Visual Function Be Used in Different iPads?

2018

SIGNIFICANCE: Apple devices could be suitable for vision tests, provided that the test has been correctly adapted to the device, after considering the spatial and colorimetric characterization of the screen. PURPOSE: The majority of vision applications has not been developed by vision or colorimetry experts and suffers from conceptual and design errors that may lead average users to an erroneous assessment of their visual capabilities. The reliability of vision tests depends on the accurate generation of the necessary visual stimuli in a particular device. Our aim was to ascertain whether a given color test, designed for a colorimetrically characterized device, might be used in another simi…
