Cardiovascular medication and intraocular pressure: results from the Gutenberg Health Study

BACKGROUND Intraocular pressure (IOP) is well known to be associated with blood pressure and other cardiovascular risk factors. The influence of systemic cardiovascular, in particular antihypertensive, medication on IOP is still controversial. This study analyses the association between the use of cardiovascular medications and IOP in a large European cohort. Analysis of Autoantibodies Against Human Retinal Antigens in Sera of Patients with Glaucoma and Ocular Hypertension

The aim of this study was to show that complex antibody patterns against retinal antigens in sera of patients with glaucoma, found in previous studies, are autoantibodies against human antigens.Sera of 179 patients were collected at the Department of Ophthalmology (University of Mainz, Germany): non-glaucomatous control patients (n=45), primary open-angle glaucoma (n=45), ocular hypertension (n=44), and normal tension glaucoma patients (n=45). The effects of prostaglandin F2α in the human eye

The ocular effects of 200 micrograms of topically applied prostaglandin F2 alpha were studied in 18 nonglaucomatous volunteers. A fall in intraocular pressure was seen in the prostaglandin-treated eyes when compared with the placebo-treated control eyes. The maximum intraocular pressure reduction was observed at the 7th h and hypotensive ocular effect persisted for 24 h. Prostaglandins did not produce any change in pupillary diameter or signs of intraocular inflammation visible by anterior segment biomicroscopy or iris fluorescein angiography. Combined procedure for glaucoma and cataract: A retrospective study

Abstract To ascertain the long-term effects of a triple procedure in the case of coexisting cataract and glaucoma, we did a retrospective study of 93 eyes that had cataract extraction, IOL implantation, and trabeculectomy within a ten-year period. Mean follow-up was 32.4 ± 21.9 months. Mean postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) was significantly lower than preoperatively, even though fewer medications were being used. One year after surgery, 60% of eyes had a best corrected visual acuity of 20/40 or better with an average improvement of 3.8 Snellen lines. Prevalence of glaucoma and distribution of intraocular pressure in a population. The Casteldaccia Eye Study.

IOP was measured in 1062 middle-aged and elderly subjects of a small Sicilian town, enrolled in a population based survey. The mean IOP was 15.1 +/- 3.7 mmHg without interocular or sex differences. A small but significant age-dependent increase of IOP was found. Circadian and seasonal influences were recorded: IOP was higher in the morning and in winter. The prevalence of chronic open-angle glaucoma was 1.2%, but it grew to 3.6 if only subjects aged 70 years or more were considered. IOP of 24 mmHg or more was found in 2.7%, while 4.3% of subjects showed IOP of 21 mmHg or more. Healon5 versus Viscoat during cataract surgery: intraocular pressure, laser flare and corneal changes

Intraocular pressure after excimer laser myopic refractive surgery

The aim of this study was to determine whether intraocular pressure (IOP), as measured by Goldmann applanation or non-contact tonometry, shows systematic changes in patients who have undergone photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) or laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK).
