A Note on the Horizontal-Vertical Illusion - A Reply to Wade (2014).

2016

Like many others before him, Nicholas Wade, in a recent publication in this journal, did not provide the correct title of Adolf Fick's dissertation, approved by the University at Marburg, Germany, in 1851, and Wade also wrongly attributed now famous illusion figures, meant to illustrate the so-called horizontal-vertical illusion (the +, the L, and the inverted T), to this author. After having corrected these errors, I briefly relate Fick’s work to modern work in the field and note that it has been widely neglected.

The goldfish--a colour-constant animal.

1996

A series of either thirteen or fifteen coloured test fields with hues from blue through grey to yellow were presented on a black background. Goldfish were trained on a bluish-grey test field by food reward. In the training situation, the setup with the coloured papers was illuminated with white light. In the test situation, the colour of the illumination was changed to blue or yellow. In both test illuminations the goldfish preferred the training field in the same way as under white illumination despite the fact that this test field stimulated the cone types very differently from the training situation. As test fields were present that excited the cones in exactly the same way as under whi…

Stereopsis assessment at multiple distances with an iPad application

2017

[EN] We present a new application for iPad for screening stereopsis at multiple distances that allows testing up to ten levels of stereoacuity at each distance. Our approach is based on a random dot stereogram viewable with anaglyph spectacles. Sixty-five subjects with no ocular diseases, wearing their habitual correction were measured at 3 m and 0.5 m. Results were compared with a standard stereoscopic test (TNO). We found not statistically significant differences between both tests, but our method achieved higher reproducibility. Applications in visual screening programs and to design and use of 3D displays, are suggested. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Colorimetric Characterization of Mobile Devices for Vision Applications

2015

Purpose: Available applications for vision testing in mobile devices usually do not include detailed setup instructions, sacrificing rigor to obtain portability and ease of use. In particular, colorimetric characterization processes are generally obviated. We show that different mobile devices differ also in colorimetric profile and that those differences limit the range of applications for which they are most adequate. Methods: The color reproduction characteristics of four mobile devices, two smartphones (Samsung Galaxy S4, iPhone 4s) and two tablets (Samsung Galaxy Tab 3, iPad 4), have been evaluated using two procedures: 3D LUT (Look Up Table) and a linear model assuming primary constan…

Synchronizing eye tracking and optical motion capture : How to bring them together

2018

Both eye tracking and motion capture technologies are nowadays frequently used in human sciences, although both technologies are usually used separately. However, measuring both eye and body movements simultaneously would offer great potential for investigating cross- modal interaction in human (e.g. music and language-related) behavior. Here we combined an Ergoneers Dikablis head mounted eye tracker with a Qualisys Oqus optical motion cap- ture system. In order to synchronize the recordings of both devices, we developed a gener- alizable solution that does not rely on any (cost-intensive) ready-made / company-provided synchronization solution. At the beginning of each recording, the partic…

A Novel Marking Reader for Progressive Addition Lenses Based on Gabor Holography

2016

PURPOSE Progressive addition lenses (PALs) are marked with permanent engraved marks (PEMs) at standardized locations. Permanent engraved marks are very useful through the manufacturing and mounting processes, act as locator marks to re-ink the removable marks, and contain useful information about the PAL. However, PEMs are often faint and weak, obscured by scratches, partially occluded, and difficult to recognize on tinted lenses or with antireflection or scratch-resistant coatings. The aim of this article is to present a new generation of portable marking reader based on an extremely simplified concept for visualization and identification of PEMs in PALs. METHODS Permanent engraved marks o…

Steerable wavelet transform for atlas based retinal lesion segmentation

2013

International audience; Computer aided diagnosis and follow up can help in prevention and treatment of diabetes and its related complications. Screening of diabetes related disease in the eyes is done by a special low cost fundus camera. A follow up of the patients visiting at di fferent time intervals for screening brings us to the problem of image analysis for change detection and its cost per patient. It is very likely that human annotations for the lesions may be erroneous and often time consuming. Since the ethnic background plays a signi cant role in retinal pigment epithelium, visibility of the choroidal vasculature and overall retinal luminance in patients and retinal images, an eth…

New key based on tilted lenses for optical encryption

2016

A novel concept based on tilted spherical lenses for optical encryption using Lohmann’s type I systems is presented. The tilt angle of the spherical lenses is used as an encrypted key and the decryption performance is studied both qualitatively (visual image degradation) and quantitatively (mean squared error analysis) by numerical simulations. The paper presents a general mathematical framework in virtue of the dioptric power matrix formalism and oblique central refraction used in the optometry field. Computer simulations show that image information cannot be retrieved after a few degrees of tilt on both spherical lenses in the encryption system. In addition, a preliminary experiment is pr…
