III: „Relatives Risiko” und „NNT” - anschauliche Maße für binäre Daten
2002
Description of categorial data can often be based on contingency tables. However, percentages appearing in such tables must be meaningful: For most applications, it may be useful to employ factors of causal influence as the row entry variable and relate percentages to sub-groups defined by these row entries ("row percentages"). The comparison of success frequencies (i. e. binary information on "therapy success yes/no") may be based on two therapies, respective success frequencies and their ratio, the relative risk. In addition the success frequencies' difference, the absolute (or excess) risk, can be transformed into the "number needed to treat" (NNT). Many international journals demand thi…
Early and late clinical landmarks of corneal dystrophies
2020
Abstract Corneal dystrophies (CDs) represent a heterogenous group of genetic diseases (Lisch and Weiss, 2019). The International Committee of Classification of Corneal Dystrophies (IC3D) distinguishes between 22 distinct forms of corneal dystrophy (CD) which are predominantly autosomal dominant, although autosomal recessive and X-chromosomal dominant and recessive patterns do exist. A detailed corneal examination of as many affected family members as possible can show the phenotypic differences of the various generations. There are few publications which describe the different CDs with regard to the early and late phenotypes. According to early and late phenotype, three types of CD are gene…

Corneal Oxygen Supply Conditions
1976
Pronounced cornea hypoxia induces swelling and a loss of transparency. Hypoxia of longer duration causes necrosis, particularly of the corneal endothelium. These findings were observed after ligation of the cilial arteries and the arteria carotis interna, after reduction of oxygen tension on the anterior corneal surface as well as after prolonged wearing of ill-fitted contact lenses (11, 15, 18, 22, 23). Because the normal function of the corneal endothelium plays a central role in maintaining transparency, an insufficient endothelial oxygen supply can directly influence vision (3, 17).
Evaluation of intraocular pressure and other biomechanical parameters to distinguish between subclinical keratoconus and healthy corneas
2021
(1) Purpose: To assess the main corneal response differences between normal and subclinical keratoconus (SCKC) with a Corvis® ST device. (2) Material and Methods: We selected 183 eyes of normal patients, of a mean age of 33 ± 9 years and 16 eyes of patients with SCKC of a similar mean age. We measured best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and corneal topography with a Pentacam HD device to select the SCKC group. Biomechanical measurements were performed using the Corvis® ST device. We carried out a non-parametric analysis of the data with SPSS software (Wilcoxon signed rank-test). (3) Results: We found statistically significant differences between the control and SCKC groups in some corneal b…
Theta power and theta-gamma coupling during formation of novel representations in the infant brain
2021
Item does not contain fulltext Building object representations is crucial for understanding the visual world, but it is not yet understood how infants start to form these representations. In adults, theta power is higher during presentation of stimuli that were later remembered, compared to those later forgotten (Friese et al., 2013), and the coupling between theta phase and gamma amplitude has been shown to be responsible for binding perceptual features to form representations. Theta-gamma coupling has been observed, for example, during the formation of visual associations (Köster, Finger, Graetz, Kater & Gruber, 2018), and was again higher for remembered than forgotten stimuli. Theta-gamm…
Crystalline subtype of pre-descemetic corneal dystrophy.
2014
Purpose: To report corneal findings in a familial case of the crystalline subtype of pre- Descemetic corneal dystrophy. Case Report: A 19-year-old girl and her 44-year-old mother were found to have asymptomatic, bilateral, punctiform and multi-colored crystalline opacities across the whole posterior layer of the corneas. Endothelial specular microscopy revealed the presence of white round flecks located at different levels anterior to the endothelium. No systemic abnormalities or medications could be related to account for these findings. Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, this is the third familial report of this rare corneal disorder. Differential diagnosis may include Schnyder cor…
Efficacy and safety study of an eyelid gel after repeated nocturnal application in healthy contact lens users and non-users
2020
Purpose: To evaluate skin biocompatibility of a nighttime hydrating eyelid gel and possible ocular surface effects in contact lens users (CLU) and non-contact lens users (NCLU). The formulation is registered as a medical device as Tridocosahexaenoine-AOX® (TDHA-AOX) (a concentrated DHA triglyceride), containing also hyaluronic acid (HA). Methods: A prospective, randomized, masked clinical trial was performed with 62 participants of both sexes, aged 20–70 years, split into: (1) CLU (n = 30) and (2) NCLU (n = 32). All participants were instructed to apply a single dose of the moisturizing gel (containing TDHA-AOX and HA) nightly to the upper and inner eyelids of their right eye (RE) only, and…
How Big Data Informs Us About the Population Health Status : endophthalmitis after ophthalmologic procedures
2022
The use of Big Data, in the form of almost exhaustive French medico-administrative databases, has made it possible to address several issues without which this would not have been possible. First, to define the incidence of endophthalmitis after ophthalmologic procedures without bias on specific recruitment modalities of respondents (tertiary centers, questionnaires ...). Thus, local observations of a change in prevalence trends of causative procedures were confirmed at the national level. The reliable description of the incidence of endophthalmitis will then make it possible to identify critical situations of recrudescence of cases. The knowledge of the delay of occurrence after the proced…
