Our purpose here is not to analyze again in detail the term oppidum and its definition, but rather to see how it was used in the specific context of Caesar’s Bellum ciuile. Previous analyses focused mainly on its use in the De Bello Gallico. Thus, the context in which the author uses the term oppidum in a work completed after the Gallic War leads, on the one hand, to question Caesar’s choice of the word oppidum, and, on the other hand, to propose different translations for it; it is through several examples that I wish to underline the complexity of the translator’s approach.

Of the three arverni oppida situated in the southern part of the Clermont-Ferrand basin, Gondole isthe least known to the general public and to the scientific communities. Unlike her sister sites, Corentand Gergovie, detailed surveys of Gondole have only recently begun, mainly because Gondole lay undiscovered until the early 1990’s. This paper explores the nature and chronology of La Tène and early Roman unenclosed agglomerations in central-eastern France. It has been prompted by the discovery of a c. 115 ha La Tène D2b/Augustan (c. 50 BC to AD 15) site close to Bibracte in the Morvan, located around the source of the River Yonne. This complex provides a new perspective on the chronology and role of Late La Tène and early Roman unenclosed settlements, adding further complexity to the story of the development of Late La Tène oppida. This report presents the results of a second series of excavations carried out between the oppidum of Boviolles and the ancient city of Nasium. It affects an occupation dated between La Tène D2 and the beginning of the augustean period, characterized by a causeway linking the two entities, a level delivering traces of artisanal activities, wells and a cooking kiln. This occupation is also characterized by the presence of the Roman army embodied in many militaria. This presence is central to the issue of the development of the ancient settlement of Nasium.
