Sense of belonging to Latvia in Latvian- and Russian-speaking residents of Latvia
2019
This study examined the sense of belonging to Latvia in Latvian-speaking and Russianspeaking residents of Latvia. The structural model involved opportunities for the fulfillment of personal goals and views of the situation in Latvia and the community as predictors of the sense of belonging at both levels of ecological systems. The Russianspeaking subsample consisted of 202 students ranging in age from 18 to 36 (65% females). The Latvian-speaking subsample involved 438 students ranging in age from 18 to 37 (67% females). The Sense of Belonging in Social Context Questionnaire and the Future of Country Questionnaire were applied. Belonging to community predicted belonging to Latvia in both gro…
Optional Learning Opportunities
2018
The effects of offering and seizing optional learning opportunities rarely have been investigated. Thus, university instructors have no basis on which to decide whether offering optional learning opportunities to their students would be worth the effort and which students would seize and benefit from them. To target these questions, we designed a teaching−learning format in which we offered psychology undergraduates optional learning opportunities throughout the semester. We investigated the cognitive and motivational prerequisites of N=108 students who seized versus forwent the learning opportunities and compared their learning outcomes both with and without controlling for prerequisites.…
Effect of Match Location, Team Ranking, Match Status and Tactical Dimensions on the Offensive Performance in Spanish ‘La Liga’ Soccer Matches
2019
The aim of this paper was to study the combined effects of tactical and contextual dimensions on achieving offensive performance in open play possessions from Spanish “La Liga” soccer matches. 1860 team possessions from 20 random matches were evaluated by means of multidimensional observation. Multilevel regression models were constructed to predict the probability to achieve offensive performance according to the tactical and contextual dimensions registered in each possession. Performing penetrative actions after recovering the ball (OR = 1.497; 95% CI: 1.022–2.192; P < 0.05), and progressing by fast attacks (OR = 3.588; 95% CI: 2.045–6.294; p < 0.001) or counterattacks (OR = 7.097;…
RETRACTED: Optical bio(sensing) using nitrogen doped graphene quantum dots: Recent advances and future challenges
2018
Abstract The exceptional optical properties and the presence of high number of reactive sites make nitrogen doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) powerful tools in analytical nanoscience and nanotechnology. At the same time, their opto-electronics properties make them excellent nanomaterials for biomedical analysis aspects. This review aims to explore progress to date various features of N-GQDs for optical bio (sensing) of target analytes. Moreover, as another aim of this review is to provide insight into the intensity based spectroscopic methods which are applied in bio (sensing) discussing their advantages and disadvantages. More importantly, we discuss in detail different aspects of the a…

Learning opportunities in the outdoor school–empirical findings on outdoor school in Germany from the children’s perspective
2017
This article examines learning processes and learning opportunities in the outdoor school based on 13 focus-group interviews with children (ages 8–9) at three German elementary schools. For 1 year,...
Universal Design of ICT for Emergency Management
2018
The primary objectives of this article are to give a systematic overview of the current state of the emerging research field of Universal Design of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for Emergency Management, and to highlight high-impact research opportunities to ensure that the increasing introduction of ICT in Emergency Management can contribute to removing barriers instead of adding more barriers, in particular for the elderly and people with disabilities. A systematic review on various literature with respect to Universal Design, ICT and Emergency Management between 2008 to 2018 was employed in this study, and reviewed systematically using a predefined framework. The ultimat…
Pathways to higher education for first and second generation immigrants in France, Switzerland and Canada: how educational tracks and aspirations mat…
2014
Despite their different histories as countries of immigration, Switzerland, France and Canada all have a sizeable immigrant population, some of which do experience obstacles in their educational and professional careers. However, both access rates of immigrant students as well as institutional routes to higher education vary remarkably between the three countries. On the one hand, France and Switzerland offer both academic and vocational routes to higher education, whereas academic routes prevail in Canada. On the other hand, immigrant students are underrepresented in Swiss and French higher education, while they generally seem to be much more successful in Canada. In this paper we wish to …
Qualidade docente e eficácia escolar
2008
