Neutron-induced defects in F-doped fibers

We present a study on 0.8 MeV neutron-induced defects up to fluences of 1017 n/cm² in fluorine doped fibers by using electron paramagnetic resonance, optical absorption and confocal micro-luminescence techniques. Our results allow to address the microscopic mechanisms leading to the generation of some Silica-related point-defects such as E’, H(I), POR and NBOH Centers.

Polarization-Dependent Disappearance of a Resonance Signal -- Indication for Optical Pumping in a Storage Ring?

We report on laser spectroscopic measurements on Li$^+$ ions in the experimental storage ring ESR at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research. Driving the $2s\,^3\!{S}_1\;(F=\frac{3}{2}) \,\leftrightarrow\,2p\,^3\!P_2\;(F=\frac{5}{2}) \leftrightarrow 2s\,^3\!{S}_1\;(F=\frac{5}{2})$ $\Lambda$-transition in $^7$Li$^+$ with two superimposed laser beams it was found that the use of circularly polarized light leads to a disappearance of the resonance structure in the fluorescence signal. This can be explained by optical pumping into a dark state of polarized ions. Experimental and robust modeling approach for lead(II) uptake by alginate gel beads: influence of the ionic strength and medium composition.

Abstract Systematic kinetic and equilibrium studies on the lead ions removal ability by Ca-alginate gel beads have been performed by varying several internal parameters, namely, number of gel beads, nature and composition of the ionic medium and pH, which allowed us to model a wastewater in order to closely reproduce the composition of a real sample. Steam sterilization processes affect the stability of clinical thermometers: Thermistor and prototypal FBG probe comparison

Abstract Temperature is one of the most frequently measured physical quantities in clinical environment and a good biomarker of illness. The need for reusable probes, which have to be sterilized to prevent infections, requires the metrological qualification of thermometer probes in response to ageing effects induced by several sterilization processes. Objective Amplitude of Accommodation Computed from Optical Quality Metrics Applied to Wavefront Outcomes

Purpose: We studied the accuracy and precision of 32 objective wavefront methods for finding the amplitude of accommodation obtained in 180 eyes. Methods: Ocular accommodation was stimulated with 0.5 D steps in target vergence spanning the full range of accommodation for each subject. Subjective monocular amplitude of accommodation was measured using two clinical methods, using negative lenses and with a custom Badal optometer. Results: Both subjective methods gave similar results. Results obtained from the Badal optometer where used to test the accuracy of the objective methods. Thermal stability of transition alumina nanocrystals with different microstructures

Abstract The preparation of well-crystallized boehmite nanoparticles with different morphologies, encompassing from aciculae or rods of 320, 150 and 70 nm of length to platelets of 50 nm in diameter, allowed a comparative study of their respective thermal evolutions as alumina precursors. Static thermal treatments of boehmite nanocrystals at 600, 1000 and 1200 °C and a dynamic, in situ synchrotron study between 100 and 1000 °C revealed that original boehmite microstructures, i.e. size and shape of the nanoparticles, were kept not only in γ-Al 2 O 3 but also in transitional aluminas up to 1000 °C. Mechanism of crystallization of fast fired mullite-based glass–ceramic glazes for floor-tiles

Abstract The mechanism of crystallization from a B 2 O 3 -containing glass, with composition based in the CaO–MgO–Al 2 O 3 –SiO 2 system, to a glass–ceramic glaze was studied by different techniques. Glass powder pellets were fast heated, simulating current industrial tile processing methods, at several temperatures from 700 to 1200 °C with a 5 min hold. Microstructural study by field emission scanning electron microscopy revealed that a phase separation phenomenon occurred in the glass, which promoted the onset of mullite crystallization at 900 °C. Renewable polyol obtained by microwave-assisted alcoholysis of epoxidized soybean oil: Preparation, thermal properties and relaxation process

[EN] The soybean oil polyol (SOP) use as feedstock in the polyurethane industry has been recently emphasized due to its excellent resistance to hydrolysis, which is also applicable in coatings and thermal insulation. In this article, the SOP was obtained by a very fast microwave-assisted alcoholysis of epoxidized soybean oil (ESO). The preparation method, thermal properties, and relaxation process were evaluated. High yields as opening and consumption epoxy group and selectivity of 99.8 mol%, 985 mol%, and 71.2 mol% were obtained. Femtosecond up-conversion technique for probing the charge transfer in a P3HT : PCBM blend via photoluminescence quenching

We report on an experimental study of the charge transfer dynamics in a P3HT : PCBM blend by means of a femtosecond fluorescence up-conversion technique. Using two-photon excitation we probe the exciton dynamics in P3HT and a P3HT : PCBM blend with a weight ratio of 1 : 1 at excitation densities of up to 6 × 1018 cm−3. In both samples we find strongly nonexponential decay traces compatible with (i) diffusion-limited exciton–exciton annihilation and (ii) diffusion-limited donor–acceptor charge transfer in the polymer blend.
