Rayleigh and Brillouin scattering in a lysozyme–water mixture: An unusual behavior around 343K

Abstract This article describes Rayleigh and Brillouin light scattering studies on a lysozyme–water mixture from 293 K to 355 K. The scattering intensities from this system are compared with those from a sodium acetate buffer used to dissolve the lysozyme. It is found that in the vicinity of 343 K the lysozyme–water mixture becomes opalescent, and the intensity of the Brillouin peaks decreases and almost vanishes, to be restored at temperatures above 343 K. Around the same temperature the intensity of the central, unshifted Rayleigh peak, however, increases strongly. No such behavior was observed for the sodium acetate buffer. Porous fractal gels: secondary effects in SEC

Abstract The fractal nature of porous silica gels, Spherosil XOA 200 and of a Lichrospher mixture, has been tested through size exclusion chromatography of polystyrene in pure and mixed eluents. Fractal parameters, D f and L , depend on eluent with D f values close to 2.0 for Spherosil and higher than 2.0 for Lichrospher. D f and L changes with eluent have been related to secondary separation effects and partition and adsorption contributions have been evaluated.
Thermomagnetic Properties Improved by Self-Organized Flower-Like Phase Separation of Ferromagnetic Co2Dy0.5Mn0.5Sn

A thermodynamically stable phase separation of Co2Dy0.5Mn0.5Sn into the Heusler compound Co2MnSn and Co8Dy3Sn4 is induced by rapid cooling from the liquid phase. The phase separation forms an ordered flower-like structure on the microscale. The increased scattering of phonons at the phase boundaries reduces the thermal conductivity and thus improves thermoelectric and spincaloric properties.

Abstract The influence of the co-surfactant on physicochemical properties of w/o soybean oil microemulsions (MEs) has been studied. In spite of the similarity in phase diagrams, the MEs display remarkable differences when examined by electrical conductivity, dynamic light scattering (DLS), small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and linear voltammetry. When different short-chain alcohols were employed as co-surfactants, together with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as surfactant, the DLS results indicated the systems to be monodisperse. FT-IR investigation of the urea state in lecithin and sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)phosphate reversed micelles

Abstract FT-IR spectra of urea/lecithin/CCl4 and urea/sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (NaDEHP)/CCl4 systems as a function of the urea-to-surfactant molar ratio (Rurea) at a fixed surfactant concentration (0.1 mol kg−1) have been recorded at 25 °C. Analysis of the absorption spectra leads the to hypothesis that urea is confined within the hydrophilic micellar core of lecithin and NaDEHP reversed micelles. The encapsulation of urea involves some changes of the urea NH stretching band with respect to that of the pure solid urea, attributable to confinement effects. Literature survey of the on-line preconcentration in flow-injection atomic spectrometric analysis

The literature on the use of “on-line” preconcentration in flow injection atomic spectrometric analysis is reviewed, taking into account its application both in flame and electrothermal atomic absorption methods as well as in plasma emission spectrometry. The basis of the different preconcentration approaches, such as liquid-liquid extraction, column preconcentration and “on-line” precipitation are discussed. The literature survey reveals the analytical performance of the developed methodologies.
A new selective fluorogenic probe for trivalent cations.

[EN] A new selective chromo-fluorogenic probe for Fe 3+, Cr 3+ and Al 3+ is reported. Detection limits are in the ¿M range and the fluorogenic sensing ability could be observed by the naked eye when illuminated with UV-light. The discussion focuses on atomic spectrometric techniques, which are mainly employed for chromium speciation in liquid matrices (134 articles). Details on the type of pretreatment, species, samples, techniques and analytical features of the methodologies proposed are given.
Strong circularly polarized luminescence of an octahedral chromium(iii) complex

The chiral spin-flip luminophore [Cr(ddpd)2]3+ can be resolved into enantiopure material by chiral HPLC. The corresponding enantiomers show very high luminescence dissymmetry factors of up to ∣glum ∣≈ 0.093 in circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) measurements for the "ruby-like" phosphorescence transition 2E/2T1 → 4A2 in the near-IR region around λ ≈ 775 nm.
