In many paradigmatic materials, such as transition metal dichalcogenides, the role played by the spin degrees of freedom is as important as the one played by the electron-electron interaction. Thus an accurate treatment of the two effects and of their interaction is necessary for an accurate and predictive study of the optical and electronic properties of these materials. Lattice Dynamics Study of HgGa2Se4 at High Pressures

We report on Raman scattering measurements in mercury digallium selenide (HgGa2Se4) up to 25 GPa. We also performed, for the low-pressure defect-chalcopyrite structure, lattice-dynamics ab initio calculations at high pressures which agree with experiments. Measurements evidence that the semiconductor HgGa2Se4 exhibits a pressure-induced phase transition above 19 GPa to a previously undetected structure. This transition is followed by a transformation to a Raman-inactive phase above 23.4 GPa. On downstroke from 25 GPa until 2.5 GPa, a broad Raman spectrum was observed, which has been attributed to a fourth phase, and whose pressure dependence was followed during a second upstroke. Effects of thermal treatments in controlled atmosphere on the Ce oxidation state in Ce-Ti-Eu doped SiO2 sol-gel glasses

We report an experimental study by optical absorption, photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopies of the modifications induced on Ce–Ti-Eu doped SiO2 glasses by thermal treatments in controlled atmosphere. Samples with Ce content varying up to 5,000 part per million by weight (ppm) and with Ti and Eu content fixed at 40 and 300 ppm respectively, have been investigated. The treatments were done in inert atmosphere of He and in O2 atmosphere at 390 C and 100 bar. Our experiments show that only Ce4? ions are affected by He treatments, whereas both Ce4? and Ce3? ions are affected by O2 treatments. Study of Confined 5-Aza[5]helicene in Ytterbium(III) Bis(2-ethylhexyl) Sulfosuccinate Reversed Micelles

Some relevant physicochemical properties of 5-aza[5]helicene (H5) in solutions of ytterbium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (Yb(DEHSS)3) reversed micelles have been investigated by UV-vis-NIR, photoluminescence, and FT-IR techniques with the aim of emphasizing the role played by specific Yb(III)/H5 interactions and confinement effects as driving forces of its binding to reversed micelles, preferential solubilization site, and local photophysical properties. Trapping cold atoms using surface-grown carbon nanotubes

2008

We present a feasibility study for loading cold atomic clouds into magnetic traps created by single-wall carbon nanotubes grown directly onto dielectric surfaces. We show that atoms may be captured for experimentally sustainable nanotube currents, generating trapped clouds whose densities and lifetimes are sufficient to enable detection by simple imaging methods. This opens the way for a different type of conductor to be used in atomchips, enabling atom trapping at submicron distances, with implications for both fundamental studies and for technological applications.

Surface Defects as a Tool to Solubilize and Functionalize WS 2 Nanotubes

Layered transition metal dichalcogenides contain a number of crystal defects which significantly change their properties may be beneficial or detrimental for a specific application. We have prepared defect-rich multiwalled WS2 nanotubes by reductive sulfidization of W18O49 nanowires that were obtained solvothermally from tungsten chloride in different alcohols. The synthesis of the W18O49 nanowires was monitored and their morphological characteristics (e. g. length, rigidity and aspect ratio) are described in detail. Atmospheric radiative effects of an in-situ measured Saharan dust plume and the role of large particles

This work will present aerosol size distributions measured in a Saharan dust plume between 0.9 and 12 km altitude during the ACE-2 campaign 1997. The distributions contain a significant fraction of large particles of diameters from 4 to 30 μm. Radiative transfer calculations have been performed using these data as input. Modelling the optical properties of fresh biomass burning aerosol produced in a smoke chamber: results from the EFEU campaign

A better characterisation of the optical properties of biomass burning aerosol as a function of the burning conditions is required in order to quantify their effects on climate and atmospheric chemistry. Preparation and characterization of polyolefin- based nanocomposite blown films for agricultural applications

Polyolefin-based films were prepared in the presence of two different organo-modified clays and characterized. The influence of organo-modifier and matrix composition on film morphology and properties were investigated using SEM, XRD, UV-Vis, FT-IR, contact-angle measurements and mechanical tests. The filler increased the films' rigidity and tear strength. Transparencies were almost unchanged in the visible range, but were reduced for harmful radiation. The presence of the clay increases the greenhouse effect, i.e. it hinders the passage of thermal emission from the soil to the outer part of the greenhouse during the night.
