Holographic recording properties and mechanisms are analyzed and compared in dielectric electrooptic crystals (EOC), dielectric colored alkali halide crystals (AHC) and amorphous semiconductor films (ASF) basing on author's investigations as well as on the literature data. Holographic photosensitivity parameters are introduced enabling the characterization of the recording mechanism efficiency independently of the particular optical and geometrical sample parameters, and allowing also for recording optimization. Study of ambient light influence for three-dimensional scanners based on structured light

Ambient light in a scene can introduce errors into range data from most commercial three-dimensional range scanners, particularly scanners that are based on projected patterns and structured lighting. We study the effects of ambient light on a specific commercial scanner. We further present a method for characterizing the range accuracy as a function of ambient light distortions. After a brief review of related research, we first describe the capabilities of the scanner we used and define the experimental setup for our study. <title>A portable device for optical assessment of the cardiovascular condition</title>

A hand-held prototype device for detection and processing of the tissue-remitted optical signals has been developed and tested. The photoplethysmography (PPG) principle was applied to follow the dilation and contraction of skin blood vessels during the cardiac cycle. <title>Photonic vascular diagnostics by four-channel photoplethysmography</title>

A four-channel photoplethysmography device was designed and built at University of Latvia to detect signals from different body parts and to analyze the signal shapes. The device consists of optical contact probes, interface, and a standard PC. Clinical tests were performed with occlusion patients having vascular problems at arm or leg arteries. Real-time characterization of aspect flaws on warped surface by artificial vision

Artificial vision is an efficient means of assuring the quality of a certain class of products. The vision system must respect the industrial constraints, in particular, the production rate. The geometrical features of flaws are pertinent information used for the acceptance of the controlled product. This article presents a real-time algorithm for the geometrical characterization of defects located on warped objects. The algorithms described enable the characterization of defects by their size and their 2-D shape. Both parameters are calculated in real time by simple reference to a look-up table. The basic properties (light refractive index, density, mechanical strength, etc.) of fused silica are changed by the influence of high-intensity light from the glass transparency region capable of generating excitons by multiphoton absorption. The self-trapped exciton decay near the microcavity in the fused silica structure leads to the stable elementary intrinsic defect pair (nonbridging oxygen atom and three-fold-coordinated silicon atom) generation. <title>Using infrared thermography as a tool to analyze curling and cockling of paper</title>

Paper surface topology analysis with infrared thermography is described. Heat is applied perpendicular to the target. Temperature distribution of the sheet correlates well with the surface height distribution when the sheet is placed on the isothermic plate. Mathematical tools for data analysis and the mechanisms behind the curl and cockles are briefly discussed. <title>Sub-bandgap light hologram recording in amorphous chalcogenides</title>

Sub-bandgap light recording (SBLR) of holograms is studied basing on the experiments in a-As2S3 films and literature data. Holographic grating recording with focused (light intensity I = 14 - 124 W/cm2 ) and unfocused (I = 0.50 - 0.78 W/cm2) 632.8 nm He-Ne laser sub-bandgap light in non-annealed and annealed a-As2S3 films has been experimentally studied. The focused light recording is found to be much more efficient (diffraction efficiency up to 14.9%, specific recording energy down to 216 J/(cm2%)) than the unfocused light recording (0.11%, 72400 J/(cm2%)).
