A structural investigation of titanium dioxide photocatalysts
1991
Abstract A study of the structure and the morphology of a titanium dioxide photocatalyst (Degussa P25) reveals multiphasic material consisting of an amorphous state, together with the crystalline phases anatase and rutile in the approximate proportions 80 20 . Transmission electron microscopy provides evidence that some individual particles are a mixture of the amorphous state with either the anatase phase or with the rutile phase, and that some particles, which are mostly anatase, are covered by a thin overlayer of rutile which manifests its presence by the appearance of Moire fringes. The photocatalytic activity of this form of titanium dioxide is reported as being greater than the activi…
Multichannel multiple scattering calculation ofL2,3-edge spectra ofTiO2andSrTiO3: Importance of multiplet coupling and band structure
2010
We report a theoretical study on x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Ti-${L}_{2,3}$-edge of rutile and anatase ${\text{TiO}}_{2}$ as well as ${\text{SrTiO}}_{3}$. Using the first-principles multichannel multiple-scattering method, we obtain good agreement with experiment in all cases. We show that both multiplet-type electron correlation effects and the long-range band structure strongly influence the spectra. The differences in line shape between the three compounds are essentially a long-range effect which reflects the different crystal structures on a length scale of 1 nm.
Reactive direct current magnetron sputtered TiO2 thin films with amorphous to crystalline structures.
2008
International audience; TiO2 thin films were deposited on soda–lime glass substrates by reactive direct current magnetron sputtering in a mixture of pure argon and oxygen. The influence of both the deposition time, td, and the post-annealing treatments on the films morphology, composition and structure was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, ellipsometry, X-ray photoelectrons spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. Amorphous TiO2 was obtained for the shortest deposition time, td=15 min. Increasing td up to 30 min, poorly crystallized anatase and rutile phases were formed together with amorphous TiO2, as was revealed by complementary XRD patterns and Raman spectra…
Highly Active Photocatalytic TiO2 Powders Obtained by Thermohydrolysis of TiCl4 in Water
2009
Highly active photocatalytic TiO2 samples were synthesized by thermohydrolysis of TiCl4 in water at 100 °C. Rutile, binary mixtures of anatase and rutile or anatase and brookite or ternary mixtures of anatase, brookite, and rutile were obtained depending on the TiCl4/H2O ratio. Rietveld refinements were employed to evaluate the crystalline phases and composition of the mixtures. The effect of the aging time on the phase composition was also studied. The band gap values of the samples were obtained by the diffuse reflectance spectra. The position of the flat band potentials of anatase, brookite, and rutile was determined measuring the photovoltage as a function of the suspension pH. From the…
Optical and Acoustic Vibrations Confined in Anatase TiO2 Nanoparticles under High-Pressure
2014
International audience; The effect of an applied high pressure on the optical and acoustic vibrations of small anatase TiO2 nanoparticles is studied using Raman scattering. All the Raman peaks show a significant variation of their frequency with pressure, except for the low-frequency peak which is due to acoustic vibrations confined in the nanoparticles. These variations (or lack thereof) are compared to first-principles calculations of the stiffness tensor and phonons of bulk anatase TiO2 as a function of pressure. In particular, the variation of the shape of the low-frequency peak is explained by the increase of the elastic anisotropy of anatase TiO2 as pressure is increased.
Mesocrystalline Cr and Sb-codoped anatase visible-light-driven photocatalyst
2018
Abstract We report on the synthesis, characterization and visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity of mesocrystalline Cr- and Sb-codoped anatase nanoparticles. Discrete and morphologically well-defined assemblies of anatase nanoparticles sized below 100 nm × 50 nm were prepared by hydrothermal aging of aqueous solutions containing titanium alkoxide, chromium acetylacetonate, antimony acetate and triethanolamine (TEOA) as stabilizer. The as-prepared and TEOA-free doped nanoparticles showed similar crystallographic parameters and spectroscopic features. The incorporation of Cr and Sb dopant cations into the anatase nanoparticles was evaluated by Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction pa…
Nature of Interactions at the Interface of Two Water-Saturated Commercial TiO2 Polymorphs
2013
Two commercial TiO2 samples, a 100% anatase and a 100% rutile, were used for the fast field cycling NMR experiments. The results showed a different behavior between the different samples. In particular, water molecules were unbonded to the solid surface for the rutile sample, whereas they appeared to chemically interact with the surface through H-bond formation with the anatase sample. The above findings accord with the generally lower activity of rutile with respect to anatase reported in literature for photocatalytic oxidation reactions in water. The difficulty of water to interact with rutile surface, indeed, could hinder the formation of OH radicals, which are the most important oxidant…
Nanostructured Pt–TiO2 composite thin films obtained by direct liquid injection metal organic chemical vapor deposition: Control of chemical state by…
2015
Abstract Nanostructured Pt–TiO 2 composite thin films were synthesized by direct liquid injection metal organic chemical vapor deposition process, using trimethyl(methylcyclopentadienyl)platinum and titanium isopropoxide as precursors. Surface and cross-sectional morphologies obtained by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy evidenced the uniform distribution of platinum nanoparticles in the TiO 2 matrix. At higher Pt content, the X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the face-centered cubic phase of platinum appeared together with an anatase TiO 2 structure. In addition, as far as the platinum chemical state is concerned, the co-deposition of TiO 2 and Pt allow…
Influence of Amorphous TiO2-x on Titania Nanoparticle Growth and Anatase-to-Rutile Transformation
2012
Amorphous TiO2-x formed together with precursors and anatase nuclei, during TiCl4 hydrolysis at soft conditions, influences both crystal growth and phase stability. The highly defective nanoparticles of anatase grow by reaction of their basic hydroxyls with acidic ones of TiO2 precursor species. The growth of anatase crystals, however, is affected by their interactions with simultaneously formed amorphous TiO2-x which increasingly covers the particles hindering the anatase-precursor contact. The interactions among anatase and amorphous and precursor components have been studied by H-1-MAS (magic angle spinning) NMR spectroscopy. The interaction between acid and basic hydroxyls favors the fo…
Preparation and photoactivity of nanostructured anatase, rutile and brookite TiO2 thin films
2006
Photoactive films consisting of pure anatase, brookite or rutile TiO2 were prepared by dip coating from water dispersions obtained by using TiCl4 as the precursor under similar mild experimental conditions
