Optimal tuning of tuned liquid column damper systems in random vibration by means of an approximate formulation

2014

Passive control devices are often added to slender and flexible systems in order to increase their structural safety. Several types of devices have been proposed in order to reduce the dynamic responses of different kind of structural systems. Among them, the tuned liquid column damper (TLCD) proved to be very effective in reducing vibration of various type of structures by means of a combined action which involves the motion of the liquid mass within the tube. The restoring force, in particular, is produced by the force of gravity acting on the liquid and the damping effect is generated by the hydrodynamic head losses that arise during the motion of the liquid inside the TLCD. Since the in…

On the Post-Elastic Behavior of LRPH Connections

2019

The paper concerns the study of the post-elastic behavior of a recently proposed innovative device, named Limited Resistance Rigid Perfectly Plastic Hinge (LRPH). In particular, LRPH is a steel device of finite length realizing a moment connection between beam elements of a steel frame; it is designed in order to possess two main and independent requirements: its bending moment resistance must be suitably lower than the one of the connected beam element and its overall bending stiffness must be equal to that of the connected beam element characterized by the same length. In order to make the proposed device reliable, LRPH must be capable of realizing a full plastic hinge for the assigned be…

Optimal design of an electro-hydraulic valve for heavy-duty vehicle clutch actuator with certain constraints

2016

Abstract The main objective of this paper is to investigate the sensitivity analysis and optimal design of a proportional solenoid valve (PSV) operated pressure reducing valve (PRV) for heavy-duty automatic transmission clutch actuators. The nonlinear electro-hydraulic valve model is developed based on fluid dynamics. In order to implement the sensitivity analysis and optimization for the PRV, the PSV model is validated by comparing the results with data obtained from a real test-bench. The sensitivity of the PSV pressure response with regard to the structural parameters is investigated by using Sobol׳s method. Finally, simulations and experimental investigations are performed on the optimi…

Optimization of trigeneration systems by Mathematical Programming: Influence of plant scheme and boundary conditions

2015

Abstract The large potential for energy saving by cogeneration and trigeneration in the building sector is scarcely exploited due to a number of obstacles in making the investments attractive. The analyst often encounters difficulties in identifying optimal design and operation strategies, since a number of factors, either endogenous (i.e. related with the energy load profiles) and exogenous (i.e. related with external conditions like energy prices and support mechanisms), influence the economic viability. In this paper a decision tool is adopted, which represents an upgrade of a software analyzed in previous papers; the tool simultaneously optimizes the plant lay-out, the sizes of the main…

Shape design optimization in 2D aerodynamics using Genetic Algorithms on parallel computers

1996

Publisher Summary This chapter presents two Shape Optimization problems for two dimensional airfoil designs. The first one is a reconstruction problem for an airfoil when the velocity of the flow is known on the surface of airfoil. The second problem is to minimize the shock drag of an airfoil at transonic regime. The flow is modeled by the full potential equations. The discretization of the state equation is done using the finite element method and the resulting non-linear system of equations is solved by using a multi-grid method. The non-linear minimization process corresponding to the shape optimization problems are solved by a parallel implementation of a genetic algorithm (GA). Some n…

Optimal design for transonic flows

1991

The feasibility of finite element and mathematical programming methods for finding an optimal shape for an symmetric airfoil in case of transonic flow is studied. The state problem is solved using multigrid-technique. Numerical examples are given.

Multicriterion design of frames with constraints on buckling

2011

The present paper is devoted to the optimal design of frame structures subjected to static and dynamic loading assuming the material behaviour as elastic perfectly plastic. The relevant optimal design problem is formulated as a minimum volume search problem. The minimum volume structure is determined under suitable constraints on the design variables as well as accounting for different resistance limits: the elastic shakedown limit and the instantaneous collapse limit, considering for each limit condition suitably chosen amplified load combinations. The effects of the dynamic actions are studied on the grounds of the dynamic features of the structure taking into account the structural perio…

P-Delta effect in structural optimization

2010

The present paper is devoted to the optimal design of structures constituted by elastic perfectly plastic material. In particular, reference will be made to the minimum volume design of multi-storey steel frames taking into account the P-Delta effect. For the sake of generality, the structure is thought as discretized into compatible finite elements and subjected to fixed and quasi-statically acting (wind) loads as well as to dynamic (seismic) loads. The effects of the dynamic actions are studied by utilizing a classical modal technique. The relevant optimal design problem is formulated on the grounds of a statical approach and different resistance limits are considered: in particular, it i…

A Comparison of Formulae for Calculating Cost-Efficient Sample Sizes of Case-Control Studies with an Internal Validation Scheme

2000

When a case-control study is planned to include an internal validation study, the sample size of the study and the proportion of validated observations has to be calculated. There are a variety of alternative methods to accomplish this. In this article some possible procedures will be compared in order to clarify whether considerable differences in the suggested optimal designs occur, dependent on the used method.

Bayesian subcohort selection for longitudinal covariate measurements in follow‐up studies

2022

We propose an approach for the planning of longitudinal covariate measurements in follow-up studies where covariates are time-varying. We assume that the entire cohort cannot be selected for longitudinal measurements due to financial limitations, and study how a subset of the cohort should be selected optimally, in order to obtain precise estimates of covariate effects in a survival model. In our approach, the study will be designed sequentially utilizing the data collected in previous measurements of the individuals as prior information. We propose using a Bayesian optimality criterion in the subcohort selections, which is compared with simple random sampling using simulated and real follo…
