A Feature Rich Distance-Based Many-Objective Visualisable Test Problem Generator
2019
In optimiser analysis and design it is informative to visualise how a search point/population moves through the design space over time. Visualisable distance-based many-objective optimisation problems have been developed whose design space is in two-dimensions with arbitrarily many objective dimensions. Previous work has shown how disconnected Pareto sets may be formed, how problems can be projected to and from arbitrarily many design dimensions, and how dominance resistant regions of design space may be defined. Most recently, a test suite has been proposed using distances to lines rather than points. However, active use of visualisable problems has been limited. This may be because the ty…
Meshless Electrophysiological Modeling of Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy—Benchmark Analysis with Finite-Element Methods in Experimental Data
2022
Computational models of cardiac electrophysiology are promising tools for reducing the rates of non-response patients suitable for cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) by optimizing electrode placement. The majority of computational models in the literature are mesh-based, primarily using the finite element method (FEM). The generation of patient-specific cardiac meshes has traditionally been a tedious task requiring manual intervention and hindering the modeling of a large number of cases. Meshless models can be a valid alternative due to their mesh quality independence. The organization of challenges such as the CRT-EPiggy19, providing unique experimental data as open access, enables b…
Application of an innovative alignment optimisation method to a cross-cultural mean comparison of teacher self-efficacy: A cross-country study
2021
Teacher self-efficacy is a crucial personal characteristic that is important not only for teachers’ well-being but also for the overall teaching and learning. However, the difficulty to ascertain scalar invariance in the measurement of the construct has beset previous attempts of cross-cultural comparisons. This study implements an alignment optimisation method to compare and rank mean teacher self-efficacy of over 150,000 teachers across 48 countries and economies that participated in the Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) that was conducted 2018. The findings show that Columbia, Portugal, United Arab Emirates, Hungary, and South Africa have teachers with the highest mean s…
Estimation of power supply harmonic impedance using a controlled voltage disturbance
2002
A novel method for power system impedance estimation is presented. The method employs a power converter to inject a voltage transient onto the supply system. The impedance is estimated through correlation of the measured voltage and current transients. Simulations and experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of this measurement technique.
A Social Spider Optimisation Algorithm for 3D Unmanned Aerial Base Stations Placement
2020
International audience; In recent years, the use of drones as aerial base stations (ABS) has attracted the attention of both scientific and industrial communities as a promising solution to enhance the network coverage. However, their deployment brings out many challenges and restrictions. In this work, we model a realistic, constrained scenario where unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are used as ABSs along with traditional ground base stations (GBSs) to extend their coverage. We propose a scalable and efficient social spider optimization (SSO) algorithm that determines the placement of UAVs and their association with both user equipments (UEs) and GBSs. Extensive computational experiments we…
Color and multispectral image processing for the detection of inflammatory lesions of the stomach
2019
The work presented in this manuscript is part of the ANR project EMMIE. This project aims to develop an innovative multimodal system for the detection of inflammatory lesions in the stomach. To this purpose, a prototype has been developed to be able to acquire NBI endoscopic images and multispectral images during human's antrum exploration. The prototype is made of a standard endoscope and multispectral images. The prototype can acquire two types of data: NBI images and spectra. These two modalities are processed independently. Common image processing features are used to recognize four kind of diseases: active gastritis, chronic gastritis, metaplasia and atrophy. In addition, visual based f…
External photon radiation treatment for prostate cancer: Uncomplicated and cancer-free control probability assessment of 36 plans
2019
[Purpose] To perform a systematic and thorough assessment, using the Uncomplicated and Cancer-Free Control Probability (UCFCP) function, of a broad range of photon prostate cancer RT treatments, on the same scenario (a unique pelvic CT set). UCFCP considers, together with the probabilities of local tumour control (TCP) and deterministic (late) sequelae (NTCP), the second primary cancer risk (SPCR) due to photon and neutron peripheral doses.
Optimisation of TA6V alloy surface laser texturing using an experimental design approach
2008
International audience; Active surfaces of plastic injection moulds are nowadays textured using classical techniques (chemical etching or EDM). Replacement of these technologies by a laser technology introduces a big flexibility: absence of mechanical contact with the tool, decrease of the effluent's volume and a big machining precision, even in the case of the complex forms as injection moulds for example. This paper reports the experimental study of the surface laser texturing of TA6V alloy. The influence of the operating factors on the laser texturing process has been studied using two experimental approaches: Taguchi methodology and response surface methodology (RSM). Empirical models h…
Wide range local resistance imaging on fragile materials by conducting probe atomic force microscopy in intermittent contact mode
2016
International audience; An imaging technique associating a slowly intermittent contact mode of atomic force microscopy (AFM) with a home-made multi-purpose resistance sensing device is presented. It aims at extending the widespread resistance measurements classically operated in contact mode AFM to broaden their application fields to soft materials (molecular electronics, biology) and fragile or weakly anchored nano-objects, for which nanoscale electrical characterization is highly demanded and often proves to be a challenging task in contact mode. Compared with the state of the art concerning less aggressive solutions for AFM electrical imaging, our technique brings a significantly wider r…
Sustainable metabolic engineering for sustainability optimisation of industrial biotechnology
2021
Industrial biotechnology represents one of the most innovating and labour-productive industries with an estimated stable economic growth, thus giving space for improvement of the existing and setting up new value chains. In addition, biotechnology has clear environmental advantages over the chemical industry. Still, biotechnology’s environmental contribution is sometimes valued with controversy and societal aspects are frequently ignored. Environmental, economic and societal sustainability of various bioprocesses becomes increasingly important due to the growing understanding about complex and interlinked consequences of different human activities. Neglecting the sustainability issues in th…
