Revealing Hidden Quantum Correlations in an Electromechanical Measurement.

2018

Under a strong quantum measurement, the motion of an oscillator is disturbed by the measurement back-action, as required by the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. When a mechanical oscillator is continuously monitored via an electromagnetic cavity, as in a cavity optomechanical measurement, the back-action is manifest by the shot noise of incoming photons that becomes imprinted onto the motion of the oscillator. Following the photons leaving the cavity, the correlations appear as squeezing of quantum noise in the emitted field. Here we observe such "ponderomotive" squeezing in the microwave domain using an electromechanical device made out of a superconducting resonator and a drumhead mechan…

Optomechanical oscillations in microbubble resonators: Enhancement, suppression and chaotic behaviour

2019

We report on the experimental and theoretical analysis of parametrical optomechanical oscillations in hollow spherical PhoXonic whispering gallery mode resonators due to radiation pressure. The optically excited acoustic eigenmodes of the PhoXonic cavity oscillate regeneratively leading to parametric oscillation instabilities.

Single-step arbitrary control of mechanical quantum states in ultrastrong optomechanics

2015

We describe how ultrastrong interactions in optomechanical systems can be used to force the system ground state to evolve into an arbitrary quantum state of mechanical motion in a completely controlled and deterministic manner. If the target quantum state is a superposition of $N$ Fock states, it can be obtained by applying in single-step $N$ classical optical signals of different frequencies for a common time interval. This protocol can be applied to various strongly interacting quantum systems as trapped ions beyond the Lamb-Dicke regime and cavity QED into the ultrastrong coupling regime.

Steady-state entanglement activation in optomechanical cavities

2014

Quantum discord, and a number of related indicators, are currently raising a relentless interest as a novel paradigm of non-classical correlations beyond entanglement. Beside merely fundamental aspects, various works have shown that discord is a valuable -- so far largely unexplored -- resource in quantum information processing. Along this line, quite a striking scheme is {entanglement activation}. An initial amount of discord between two disentangled parties of a multipartite system affects the dynamics so as to establish entanglement across a bipartition, which would not arise otherwise. To date, such a process was proven to be achievable only dynamically, i.e., with no guarantee of a sta…

Backaction-evading measurement of entanglement in optomechanics

2019

We propose here a fully backaction-evading scheme for the measurement of the entanglement between two nanomechanical resonators. The system, which consists of two mechanical oscillators, coupled to a single mode of an electromagnetic resonant cavity through a radiation-pressure interaction term, is driven by two pump tones and four detection tones. As previously discussed in the literature, the former induce entanglement between the two mechanical oscillators, while we show here that a specific choice of phase and amplitude of the detection tones allows for direct pairwise reconstruction of the collective quadrature fluctuations of the mechanical oscillators belonging to quantum-mechanics-f…

Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt Bell inequality test in an optomechanical device

2018

We propose here a scheme, based on the measurement of quadrature phase coherence, aimed at testing the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt Bell inequality in an optomechanical setting. Our setup is constituted by two optical cavities dispersively coupled to a common mechanical resonator. We show that it is possible to generate EPR-like correlations between the quadratures of the output fields of the two cavities, and, depending on the system parameters, to observe the violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality.

Hybrid optomechanics for Quantum Technologies

2014

We review the physics of hybrid optomechanical systems consisting of a mechanical oscillator interacting with both a radiation mode and an additional matter-like system. We concentrate on the cases embodied by either a single or a multi-atom system (a Bose-Einstein condensate, in particular) and discuss a wide range of physical effects, from passive mechanical cooling to the set-up of multipartite entanglement, from optomechanical non-locality to the achievement of non-classical states of a single mechanical mode. The reviewed material showcases the viability of hybridised cavity optomechanical systems as basic building blocks for quantum communication networks and quantum state-engineering…

State Preparation and Tomography of a Nanomechanical Resonator with Fast Light Pulses

2018

Pulsed optomechanical measurements enable squeezing, non-classical state creation and backaction-free sensing. We demonstrate pulsed measurement of a cryogenic nanomechanical resonator with record precision close to the quantum regime. We use these to prepare thermally squeezed and purified conditional mechanical states, and to perform full state tomography. These demonstrations exploit large photon-phonon coupling in a nanophotonic cavity to reach a single-pulse imprecision of 9 times the mechanical zero-point amplitude $x_\mathrm{zpf}$. We study the effect of other mechanical modes which limit the conditional state width to 58 $x_\mathrm{zpf}$, and show how decoherence causes the state to…

Geometric-phase backaction in a mesoscopic qubit-oscillator system

2012

We illustrate a reverse Von Neumann measurement scheme in which a geometric phase induced on a quantum harmonic oscillator is measured using a microscopic qubit as a probe. We show how such a phase, generated by a cyclic evolution in the phase space of the harmonic oscillator, can be kicked back on the qubit, which plays the role of a quantum interferometer. We also extend our study to finite-temperature dissipative Markovian dynamics and discuss potential implementations in micro- and nanomechanical devices coupled to an effective two-level system. © 2012 American Physical Society.

Strong vacuum squeezing from bichromatically driven Kerrlike cavities: from optomechanics to superconducting circuits

2015

AbstractSqueezed light, displaying less fluctuation than vacuum in some observable, is key in the flourishing field of quantum technologies. Optical or microwave cavities containing a Kerr nonlinearity are known to potentially yield large levels of squeezing, which have been recently observed in optomechanics and nonlinear superconducting circuit platforms. Such Kerr-cavity squeezing however suffers from two fundamental drawbacks. First, optimal squeezing requires working close to turning points of a bistable cycle, which are highly unstable against noise thus rendering optimal squeezing inaccessible. Second, the light field has a macroscopic coherent component corresponding to the pump, ma…
