The adult Xenopus presents the unique capability to smell odors both in water and air thanks to two different olfactory pathways. Nevertheless, the tadpole can initially perceive only water-borne odorants, as the olfactory receptor neurons (ORN) that will detect air-borne odorants develop later. Changes in vacuolar structure and the expression at the RNA level of a tonoplast aquaporin (BobTIP26-1) were examined in cauliflower (Brassicaoleracea L. var. botrytis) under water-stress conditions. Gradual drying out of slices of cauliflower floret tissue caused its collapse, with a shrinkage in tissue and cell volumes and an apparent vesiculation of the central vacuole, whereas osmotic stress resulted in plasmolysis with a collapse of the cytoplasm and the central vacuole within. At the end of the Permian, numerous amphibians and therapsids vanished, creating many empty ecological niches, which were occupied by new creatures. This event brought new trends in animal locomotion thanks to modifications of the skeleton limbs. The newcomers were faster and more dangerous for other families. The prominent ichnogenera were Synaptichnium, Chirotherium, Brachychirotherium, Isochirotherium, and Sphingopus. Abstract According to current theory, the splitting of a single species into two is best observed by a ring of intergrading populations which occupy a ring-shaped distribution area and whose terminal populations not only meet but overlap and co-occur without or with only little hybridization. The three most discussed examples in birds are revisited here. The great tit complex ( Parus major s. l.) turned out to be an assemblage of four subspecies groups forming a secondary ring of population.
