Photoreceptor vitality in organotypic cultures of mature vertebrate retinas validated by light-dependent molecular movements
2006
AbstractVertebrate photoreceptor cells are polarized neurons highly specialized for light absorption and visual signal transduction. Photoreceptor cells consist of the light sensitive outer segment and the biosynthetic active inner segment linked by a slender connecting cilium. The function of mature photoreceptor cells is strictly dependent on this compartmentalization which is maintained in the specialized retinal environment. To keep this fragile morphologic and functional composition for further cell biological studies and treatments we established organotypic retina cultures of mature mice and Xenopus laevis. The organotypic retina cultures of both model organisms are created as co-cul…
Symmetries and Symmetry Groups in Quantum Physics
2013
When one talks about discrete or continuous groups which are to describe symmetries of quantum systems, one must first identify the objects on which the elements of these groups are acting.

Predictive validity of the GOSLON Yardstick index in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate: A systematic review
2017
Among the various indices developed for measuring the results of treatment in patients born with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP), the GOSLON Yardstick index is the most widely used to assess the efficacy of treatment and treatment outcomes, which in UCLP cases are closely linked to jaw growth. The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review to validate the predictability of growth using the GOSLON Yardstick in patients born with UCLP. A systematic literature review was conducted in four Internet databases: Medline, Cochrane Library, Scopus and Embase, complemented by a manual search and a further search in the databases of the leading journals that focus on this topic. An el…
Two amino acid residues determine the low substrate affinity of human cationic amino acid transporter-2A.
2003
Mammalian cationic amino acid transporters (CAT) differ in their substrate affinity and sensitivity to trans-stimulation. The apparent Km values for cationic amino acids and the sensitivity to trans-stimulation of CAT-1, -2B, and -3 are characteristic of system y+. In contrast, CAT-2A exhibits a 10-fold lower substrate affinity and is largely independent of substrate at the trans-side of the membrane. CAT-2A and -2B demonstrate such divergent transport properties, even though their amino acid sequences differ only in a stretch of 42 amino acids. Here, we identify two amino acid residues within this 42-amino acid domain of the human CAT-2A protein that are responsible for the apparent low af…
The Closed/Open Model for Lipase Activation. Addressing Intermediate Active Forms of Fungal Enzymes by Trapping of Conformers in Water-Restricted Env…
2001
The behavior of prototypic fungal lipases in a water-restricted environment has been investigated by exploiting the reported experimental strategy that allows the trapping (freeze-drying) of the enzyme in the conformation present in aqueous solution and to subsequently assay it in nonaqueous media [Mingarro, I., Abad, C., and Braco, L. (1995) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 92, 3308-3312]. We now report, using simple esterification as well as acidolysis (triglycerides as substrates) as nonaqueous model reactions, that the presence of a detergent (n-octyl-beta-glucopyranoside) in the freeze-drying buffer, at concentrations below the critical micellar concentration, generates different catalyti…
The Wnt-specific astacin proteinase HAS-7 restricts head organizer formation in Hydra
2021
Abstract Background The Hydra head organizer acts as a signaling center that initiates and maintains the primary body axis in steady state polyps and during budding or regeneration. Wnt/beta-Catenin signaling functions as a primary cue controlling this process, but how Wnt ligand activity is locally restricted at the protein level is poorly understood. Here we report a proteomic analysis of Hydra head tissue leading to the identification of an astacin family proteinase as a Wnt processing factor. Results Hydra astacin-7 (HAS-7) is expressed from gland cells as an apical-distal gradient in the body column, peaking close beneath the tentacle zone. HAS-7 siRNA knockdown abrogates HyWnt3 proteo…
COVID-19, A new challenge in the dental practice
2021
Background This review was conducted in order to learn the latest information about how to prevent cross-infection of COVID-19 in dentistry. The aim of this study is offer a clinical protocol to reduce the risk of infection of COVID-19 in dental settings. Material and methods We carried out a review based on the PRISMA guide (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses). We used the following three databases: PubMed, Embase and Scopus. The search strategy was performed in the three databases applying the search terms "COVID-19 AND dental", "COVID-19 AND dentistry", selecting human studies published from November 2019 to May 2020. English publications regarding COVID-1…
On Long-Lasting Humanimal Friendships: Gayness, Aging, and Disease in Lily and the Octopus
2021
This paper analyzes the significance and structural development of the theme of aging in Steven Rowley’s debut novel, the bestselling Lily and the Octopus (2016), a narrative that extends and reinvents the literary approach to manhood through alternate forms of humanimal relations. The novel intersects postmodern conceptions of madness, grief, loneliness, intimacy, and death through a tragicomic exploration of the symmetry between an unlikely (insofar as literary tradition goes) couple: Ted, a gay white male in his early forties, and his senior female dachshund, Lily. As signs of the end of Lily’s life are fleshed out by the cancerous “octopus” that chokes her brain, Ted inadvertently paral…
Systematic review and critical appraisal of Childhood Trauma Questionnaire - Short Form (CTQ-SF).
2021
Abstract Background Child maltreatment is a complex and multidimensional construct that encompasses a great number of risk factors. The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire — Short Form, one of the most widely used and validated instruments to assess childhood maltreatment in the past ten years, is a retrospective instrument that assesses several types of childhood abuse and maltreatment which is divided into five dimensions. Objective The objectives of this systematic review are to critically appraise, compare, and summarize the methodological quality and psychometric properties of published research articles validating the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire — Short Form utilizing the COSMIN checkli…
