Wilt and Collapse of Cuphea ignea Caused by Phytophthora tropicalis in Italy.

2006

The genus Cuphea (Lythraceae) includes approximately 250 species of annual, evergreen perennials and short shrubs native to Central and South America. During the springs of 2003 and 2004, 10% of the nursery stock of approximately 12,000 potted cigar-flowers (C. ignea A. DC) grown in a screenhouse at a commercial ornamental nursery near Piedimonte Etneo, Sicily, had symptoms of wilt, defoliation, and rapid collapse of the entire plant. These foliar symptoms were associated with a reduced root system, browning of the collar, and dark brown discolored roots. A Phytophthora species was consistently recovered by plating small pieces of rotted roots of symptomatic plants onto selective medium (3…

Inhalable nano into micro dry powders for ivacaftor delivery: The role of mannitol and cysteamine as mucus-active agents.

2020

In this paper the innovative approach of Nano into micro (NiM9 was developed to produce Nanoparticles loaded Ivacaftor to incorporate into mannitol or mannitol/cysteamine micromatrices for drug pulmonary administration in CF. Nanoparticles composed by a mixture of two polyhydrohydroxyethtylaspartamide copolymers containing a loading of Ivacaftor of 15.5 % w/w were produced. These Nanoparticles were incorporated into microparticles to obtain NiM that were characterized in terms of size and size distribution, interaction with CF-AM by rheological and turbidimetric studies as well as by aerodynamic diameter measurements. Finally the activity of Ivacaftor into these NiM was evaluated by in vitr…

Root and Basal Stem Rot of Scotch Broom Caused by Phytophthora citricola and P. drechsleri in Italy.

2005

Scotch broom (Cytisus scoparius (L.) Link, Fabaceae), an evergreen shrub native to Europe, is cultivated as a garden plant. In 2003 and 2004, potted plants with symptoms of leaf chlorosis, defoliation, and eventual wilt and associated with root and collar rot were observed in ornamental nurseries in Sicily. As much as 10% of plants were affected in a single nursery. Two species of Phytophthora were consistently isolated alone or together from the same pot with the selective medium of Masago et al. (2). Pure cultures were obtained by single-hypha transfers and the species were identified as P. citricola Sawada (approximately 40% of isolations) and P. drechsleri Tucker (60% of isolations) on…

Indirect Discrimination and School Segregation of Roma Children in the Czech Republic

2018

In DH v. Czech Republic (2007), the Czech government argued that Roma parents consented to the assignment of their children to ‘special’ schools. According to the government, parental consent undermined the claim that the disproportionate assignment of Roma children to inferior schools amounted to discrimination. The court rejected the argument, finding as a matter of law that parents could not choose to subject their children to discriminatory education, and as a matter of fact that the parents’ consent was not informed. Since the judgment, the Czech government continues to disproportionately assign Roma children to inferior schools, but it has revised the procedure they use to obtain pare…

Distinct Photophysics of the Isomers of B18H22 Explained

2012

The photophysics of the two isomers of octadecaborane(22), anti- and syn-B 18H 22, have been studied by UV-vis spectroscopic techniques and theoretical computational methods. In air-saturated hexane, anti-B 18H 22 shows fluorescence with a high quantum yield, Φ F = 0.97, and singlet oxygen O 2( 1Δ g) production (Φ Δ ∼ 0.008). Conversely, isomer syn-B 18H 22 shows no measurable fluorescence, instead displaying much faster, picosecond nonradiative decay of excited singlet states. Computed potential energy hypersurfaces (PEHs) for both isomers rationalize these data, pointing to a deep S 1 minimum for anti-B 18H 22 and a conical intersection (CI) between its S 0 and S 1 states that lies 0.51 e…

DNA oxidation products determined with repair endonucleases in mammalian cells: Types, basal levels and influence of cell proliferation

1999

Purified repair endonucleases such as Fpg protein, endonuclease III and IV allow a very sensitive quantification of various types of oxidative DNA modifications in mammalian cells. By means of these assays, the numbers of base modifications sensitive to Fpg protein, which include 8-hydroxyguanine (8-oxoG), were determined to be less than 0.3 per 10(6) bp in several types of untreated cultured mammalian cells and human lymphocytes and less than 10 per 10(6) bp in mitochondrial DNA from rat and porcine liver. Oxidative 5,6-dihydropyrimidine derivatives sensitive to endonuclease III and sites of base loss sensitive to endonuclease IV or exonuclease III were much less frequent than Fpg-sensitiv…

Impact of structural features of odorant molecules on their retention/release behaviours in dairy and pectin gels

2014

International audience; Reducing of fat content in food requires a reformulation that may cause a different perception of aroma. Maintaining an adequate level of acceptability of these reformulated products for consumers requires a better understanding of the mechanisms that control the retention of odorant molecules in food matrices. Although pectins are commonly employed as thickeners, their effect on the retention of odorant molecules in nonhomogeneous products has been examined more frequently than their effect on the retention of odorant molecules in simple gels models. The purpose of this study was to explore and compare the respective effects of pectin in simple model systems. The rel…

"Fuggire in boscaglia oscura". Osservazioni sul contrasto tra città e campagna nella Polonia rinascimentale

2018

Deep understanding of the notion concerning the opposition between cultural world represented by the city and nature connected with the life in the country was captured in Titians painting from 1511 depicting St. Anthonys miracle, taking place at the meeting of those two spaces. This sophisticated contrast, characteristic of the Italian Renaissance, was not reflected in Poland where the cities and their court culture were less representative. Mass contact of Polish students, visiting particularly Padua in the Renaissance, with the culture of Venetian villas, had a great impact mainly on ideological attempts to reflect humanistic models present in literaturę, art and lifestyle developing at …
