Heterotrophic bacteria community and pollution indicators of mussel--farm impact in the Gulf of Gaeta (Tyrrhenian Sea).

Field studies were carried out to determine and compare the impact of organic loads due to the biodeposition of a mussel farm on the water quality and sediment in a coastal area of the Tyrrhenian Sea (Western Mediterranean). A total of five environmental and five microbial parameters were examined from March, 1997 to February, 1998 on a monthly basis at three stations: the first was located under the mussel farm, the second located at about 40 m away from the mussel farm, while the third designed as a control was at about 1-km. Tonometers and infectious risk: myth or reality? Efficacy of different disinfection regimens on tonometer tips

Purpose To evaluate the adequacy of common disinfection regimens for disposable tonometer tips and assess if disinfection of reusable prisms or the use of disposable tips is preferable. Methods We used disposable tonometer tips, using the same material and tip diameter of standard Goldmann tonometer prism. Strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Candida albicans were tested according to the European standard guidelines for disinfectants test. Testing of the region of Murcia soils by near infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and chemometrics.

A partial least squares near infrared (PLS-NIR) method has been developed for the determination of several physicochemical parameters in soils from different locations of the Region of Murcia. The method was based on the proper chemometric treatment of diffuse reflectance spectra of soil samples. Reflectance spectra were scanned from samples stored in glass vials in the NIR region between 800 and 2600 nm, averaging 36 scans per spectrum at a resolution of 8 cm(-1). Conformationally Locked Pyramidality Explains the Diastereoselectivity in the Methylation of trans-Fused Butyrolactones

A stereoselectivity model inspired by the total synthesis of stemona alkaloids is developed to explain why enolate-derived 3,4-fused butyrolactones are methylated with a preference for syn alkylation. The model shows how conformational locking present in nonplanar enolate structures favors syn over anti methylation, due to less significant structural distortions in the syn pathway. The developed model was also successfully used to rationalize selectivities of previously documented methylation reactions. peerReviewed

Diastereoselective Intramolecular Additions of Allyl- and Propargylsilanes to Iminium Ions: Synthesis of Cyclic and Bicyclic Quaternary Amino Acids

Chiral imino lactones derived from (R)-phenylglycinol containing an allyl- or propargyltrimethylsilyl group in the side chain readily cyclized in the presence of acidic reagents to afford spirocyclic compounds with high diastereoselectivity. Removal of the chiral auxiliary produced 2-substituted 1-aminocycloalkanecarboxylic acids, whereas further cyclizations by means of metathesis or hydroamination reactions led to bicyclic derivatives of pipecolic acid and proline.

Stereoselective synthesis and determination of the cytotoxic properties of spicigerolide and three of its stereoisomers.

Stereoselective syntheses of the naturally occurring, cytotoxic lactone spicigerolide and three nonnatural stereoisomers thereof are described. The commercially available sugar l-rhamnose was in all cases the chiral starting material. Key steps in each of these syntheses were asymmetric Brown allylations and ring-closing metatheses. The cytotoxic activities of the four lactones against a range of tumoral lines were then determined.

N-Functionalized IndPHOX ligands bearing various groups have been synthesized and the effects of the N1-substituent on the reaction rate, yield, and asymmetric induction in a palladium-catalyzed allylic substitution reaction are reported. The presence of an oxygen atom in the ligands, namely an N-MOM or N-THP group, led to enhancement of the enantioselectivity in the allylic amination reaction. In addition, a ligand with a chiral oxazoline ring at C-1 and a phosphane substituent at C-2 provided high enantioselectivity in good yield in an asymmetric allylic alkylation reaction.

TCR V alpha chain expression influences reactivity to the hapten TNP.

We have recently demonstrated a remarkable selection of in vitro cultivated, TNP-specific polyclonal T cell lines for the expression of a TCR beta chain encoded by the V beta 8.2 gene. The goal of the present study was to analyse V alpha usage in V beta 8.2 T cells responsive to TNP, using TNP-specific T cell lines derived from three common strains of mice, as well as from V beta 8.2 transgenic mice. Results indicate that in vitro TNP stimulation of T cells from TNP-immune mice results in significant skewing of V alpha usage among responding V beta 8.2+ T cells, with overexpression observed for V alpha 3.2 and V alpha 8.
