Effects of fire on ash thickness in a Lithuanian grassland and short-term spatio-temporal changes
2012
Ash thickness is a key variable in the protection of soil against erosion agents after planned and unplanned fires. Thicker ash provides better protection against raindrop impact and reduces the runoff response by retaining water and promoting water infiltra5 tion although little is known about the distribution and the evolution of the ash layer after the fires. Ash thickness measurements were conducted along two transects (flat and sloping areas) following a a grid experimental design. Both transects extended from the burned area into an adjacent unburned area. We analysed ash thickness evolution according to time and fire severity. In order to interpolate data with accuracy and iden10 tif…
Heterogeneous fenton oxidation using magnesium ferrite nanoparticles for ibuprofen removal from wastewater: optimization and kinetics studies
2020
In this study, the catalytic properties of Fenton-like catalyst based on magnesium ferrite nanoparticles for IBP degradation were examined. Structural and morphological studies showed the low crystallinity and mesoporous structure for the catalyst obtained via a glycine-nitrate method. The influences of catalyst dosage, oxidant concentration, and solution pH on the pollutant degradation were investigated. The pseudo-first-order model describes kinetic data, and under optimal condition (catalyst dose of 0.5 g L-1, H2O2 concentration of 20.0 mM, and pH of 8.0), apparent rate constant reached 0.091 min-1. It was shown that Fenton reaction was mainly induced by iron atoms on the catalyst surfac…
(E)-7-(Pyren-1-yl)hept-6-enoic acid
2010
The title compound, C₂₃H₂₀O₂, is a precursor of a pyrene-based supramolecular element for non-covalent attachment to a carbon nanotube. The asymmetric unit contains three independent molecules. The carboxylic acid group in each of these molecules serves as an intermolecular hydrogen-bond donor and acceptor, generating the commonly observed double O-H...O hydrogen-bond motif in an eight-membered ring. Weaker C-H...O, π π [centroid-centroid distance = 3.968 (4) Å] and C-H...π interactions are also found in the crystal structure. peerReviewed
Arsenic exposure, diabetes-related genes and diabetes prevalence in a general population from Spain
2019
Inorganic arsenic exposure may be associated with diabetes, but the evidence at low-moderate levels is not sufficient. Polymorphisms in diabetes-related genes have been involved in diabetes risk. We evaluated the association of inorganic arsenic exposure on diabetes in the Hortega Study, a representative sample of a general population from Valladolid, Spain. Total urine arsenic was measured in 1451 adults. Urine arsenic speciation was available in 295 randomly selected participants. To account for the confounding introduced by non-toxic seafood arsenicals, we designed a multiple imputation model to predict the missing arsenobetaine levels. The prevalence of diabetes was 8.3%. The geometric …
Friedel-Crafts catalytic alkylations using rare earth-based mineral supports
1998
Abstract Rare earth halides supported on mineral supports (K10 montmorillonite and silica) were investigated as catalysts for Friedel-Crafts alkylations. This project concerns the replacement of the widely used Lewis acid AlCl3 in Friedel-Crafts reactions by environmentally friendly catalysts in that they circumvent the production of aluminum waste. The catalytic activity of these heterogeneous catalysts was established in a series of alkylations of aromatic compounds.
ortho-(Dimesitylboryl)phenylphosphines: Positive Boryl Effect in the Palladium-Catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura Coupling of 2-Chloropyridines
2013
The presence of ortho-dimesitylboryl moiety in the catalyst is crucial to enhance the catalytic performance.
Substituent Effects on the [N−I−N]+ Halogen Bond
2016
We have investigated the influence of electron density on the three-center [N–I–N]+ halogen bond. A series of [bis(pyridine)iodine]+ and [1,2-bis((pyridine-2-ylethynyl)benzene)iodine]+ BF4– complexes substituted with electron withdrawing and donating functionalities in the para-position of their pyridine nitrogen were synthesized and studied by spectroscopic and computational methods. The systematic change of electron density of the pyridine nitrogens upon alteration of the para-substituent (NO2, CF3, H, F, Me, OMe, NMe2) was confirmed by 15N NMR and by computation of the natural atomic population and the π electron population of the nitrogen atoms. Formation of the [N–I–N]+ halogen bond re…
From Single Molecules to Nanoscopically Structured Materials: Self-Assembly of Metal Chalcogenide/Metal Oxide Nanostructures Based on the Degree of P…
2011
A chemically specific and facile method for the immobilization of metal oxide nanoparticles onto the surface of IF-MoS2 nested fullerenes is reported. The modification strategy is based on the chalcophilic affinity of transition metals such as Fe2+/Fe3+, Fe3+, or Zn2+ as described by the Pearson HSAB concept. The binding capabilities of the 3d metals are dictated by their Pearson hardness. Pearson hard cations such as Fe3+ (Fe2O3) do not bind to the chalcogenide surfaces; borderline metals such as Fe2+ (Fe3O4) or Zn2+ (ZnO) bind reversibly. Pearson-soft metals like Au bind irreversibly. The immobilization of metal oxide nanoparticle colloids was monitored by transmission electron microscopy…
Lignin-based activated carbon-supported metal oxide catalysts in lactic acid production from glucose
2021
In this study, heterogeneous biomass-based activated carbon-supported metal oxide catalysts were prepared and tested for lactic acid production from glucose in aqueous solution. Activated carbons were produced from hydrolysis lignin by chemical (ZnCl2) or steam activation and modified with a nitric acid treatment and Sn, Al, and Cr chlorides to obtain carbon-based metal oxide catalysts. The modification of the carbon support by nitric acid treatment together with Sn and Al oxides led to an increase in lactic acid yield. The highest lactic acid yield (42%) was obtained after 20 minutes at 180 °C with the Sn/Al (5/2.5 wt.%) catalyst on steam-activated carbon treated by nitric acid. Reusabilit…
Effects of magnesium chloride on the contractile response of uterus to several agonists in Ca-free solution
1987
Abstract The effects of MgCl2 on the oestrogen-dominated rat uterus have been examined. Tissues were preincubated in a Ca2+- and Mg2+-free medium containing 3 mM EDTA. Most experiments were subsequently performed in a similar medium containing either no EDTA or EDTA (1 mM). When MgCl2 was added cumulatively (1–32 mM) no contractile responses were obtained in Ca,Mg-free medium or in Ca,Mg-free high K+ solution. When 2 mM CaCl2 as added, a sustained contraction was obtained. Subsequent addition of cumulative concentrations of MgCl2 caused concentration-dependent relaxation. Oxytocin, 2 μM, produced a small and sustained contraction in a Ca,Mg-free medium. Addition of MgCl2, 2 mM, increased th…
