Liquid Crystalline Ordering and Charge Transport in Semiconducting Materials
2009
Organic semiconducting materials offer the advantage of solution processability into flexible films. In most cases, their drawback is based on their low charge carrier mobility, which is directly related to the packing of the molecules both on local (amorphous versus crystalline) and on macroscopic (grain boundaries) length scales. Liquid crystalline ordering offers the possibility of circumventing this problem. An advanced concept comprises: i) the application of materials with different liquid crystalline phases, ii) the orientation of a low viscosity high temperature phase, and, iii) the transfer of the macroscopic orientation during cooling to a highly ordered (at best, crystalline-like…
Electrochemical fabrication of metal/oxide/conducting polymer junction
2011
After discovery of conducting polymers and the possibility to modify their electrical properties from insulating to metallic like behavior by doping and a careful choice of the processing conditions, a large amount of research effort has been devoted to the theoretical understanding of their solid state properties as well as to exploit the possible application of conducting polymers in many technological fields including large area organic electronics, polymer photovoltaic cell, and sensors. 1-4 Organic thin film transistors appear very promising devices for the development of low cost, flexible, and disposable plastic electronics. In order to reduce the operating voltage it has been sugges…
Improving the Robustness of Organic Semiconductors through Hydrogen Bonding
2021
Molecular organization plays an essential role in organic semiconductors since it determines the extent of intermolecular interactions that govern the charge transport present in all electronic applications. The benefits of hydrogen bond-directed self-assembly on charge transport properties are demonstrated by comparing two analogous pyrrole-based, fused heptacyclic molecules. The rationally designed synthesis of these materials allows for inducing or preventing hydrogen bonding. Strategically located hydrogen bond donor and acceptor sites control the solid-state arrangement, favoring the supramolecular expansion of the π-conjugated surface and the subsequent π-stacking as proved by X-ray d…
Nanoimprint lithography for organic electronics
2002
Thin films made of organic semiconductors (α-sexithiophene, PDAS and PBAS) have been printed and the impact on morphology studied by optical, atomic force and electron microscopy. Surfaces in contact with the stamp during printing undergo a change towards smoother and more ordered material at the macromolecular scale. Interdigitated nanoelectrodes to be used as source and drain in TFTs have been made and printed down to 100 nm. PDAS and PBAS can be printed at room temperature and preserve their printed feature provided they are cross-linked afterwards.
Determination of charge carrier mobility of hole transporting polytriarylamine-based diodes
2010
Hole transport properties of three different side chain poly(triarylamines) have been determined by means of the analysis of steady-state current-voltage characteristics using co-planar diode structures. The interpretation is based on space-charge limited models with field-dependent mobility. Mobilities between ~ 10- 8 and 10- 6 cm2 V- 1 s- 1 are obtained. The highest mobility is achieved for poly(tetraphenylbenzidine) devices and the lowest for poly(triphenylamine) devices. Electron-rich methoxy substituents increase the mobility of poly(triphenylamine)s. A comparison of the mobility values with those obtained using organic field-effect transistors is also given. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All r…
Engineering Charge Injection Interfaces in Hybrid Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cells
2014
Light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) consists of a thin film of an ionic organic semiconductor sandwiched between two electrodes. Because of the large density of ions, LECs are often reported to perform independently on the electrodes work function. Here we use metal oxides as charge injection layers and demonstrate that, although electroluminescence is observed independently of the electrodes used, the device performances are strongly dependent on the choice of the interface materials. Relying on metal oxide charge injection layers, such hybrid devices are of interest for real lighting applications and could pave the way for new efficient, stable, low-cost lighting sources.
LED organici con emissione nel blu
2007
We report the development of blue organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on molecular materials. Electrical characteristics and quantum efficiency of single layer devices and triple layer devices comprising further a hole blocking layer and an electron injection layer are compared and prospects for applications to passive matrix displays and fluorescence integrated biosensors are also discussed.

The Synthesis, Condensation, and Luminescence of Stilbenoid Oligomers with Alkoxysilane End Groups
2001
ABSTRACTA synthetic route to highly luminescent organic semiconductors with curable alkoxysilyl groups is described. Monodisperse oligo(phenylenevinylene)s are rigidly connected to di- and triethoxysilanes via Heck reactions or via cross-metathesis. Hydrolysis of the silicic esters yields silanols condensing to linear and cyclic oligo-OPV-siloxanes or to three-dimensional networks, thus allowing the transformation of small molecules to fluorescent materials with well-defined chromophores. Transparent films are obtained by casting of soluble cyclosiloxanes and from OPV-silanetriols, the latter can be cured to insoluble networks.
Photoelectrical properties of thin films of DMABI derivatives
2011
Organic thin films with semiconducting properties have been intensively studied in nowadays due to very promising applications in organic electronics, for example, organic photovoltaic. Among organic semiconductors, group of indandiones with their photoelectrical properties, thermal and chemical stability are good candidates for use in design of novel molecular electronic devices. We have investigated photoconductivity quantum efficiency and its spectral dependence of two dimetilaminobenzylidene-1,3-indandione derivatives. Values of the photoconductivity threshold energy and optical energy gap are obtained. These results are compared with calculated transfer energy gap estimated according t…
