The influence of organizational factors on road transport safety

2018

Road transport safety is a major concern across Europe due to the human and socio-economic costs associated with work-related traffic accidents. Traditional approaches have adopted regulatory and technical measures to prevent road accidents leaving aside the organizational factors that might contribute to road transport safety. However, contemporary sociotechnical systems theory acknowledges the need to take into account organizational factors. This study adopts a sociotechnical approach and it examines the relationship between a number of organizational factors (organizational learning and training) and road traffic accidents in the organizations under study. Our sample was composed of 107…

2017

The challenges of today’s working life lead to stressful experiences and therefore to different types of coping patterns. The relationship between these coping patterns and organizational and professional commitment is not yet fully researched. This study has been conducted with about 180 participants using the questionnaires Work-related Behavior and Experience Patterns (AVEM—AVEM is the acronym for “Arbeitsorientiertes Verhaltens—und Erlebensmuster”which translates to Work-related Behavior and Experience Patterns) and the Test of Affective, Normative and Continuous Commitment to the Organization, the Profession and the Type of Employment. Organizational learning: Proposal of an integrative scale and research instrument

2014

Abstract This study describes the development and validation of an instrument to measure organizational learning. Starting out from a comprehensive analysis of the main organizational learning models in the specialized literature, the organizational learning scale in this study consists of 18 items forming five dimensions: the ontological levels of learning, modes of knowledge conversion, learning sub-processes, types of learning, and feedback and feed-forward flows of learning. A survey to large Spanish companies provides data from 167 companies. Confirmatory factor analysis tests the construct measurement model and validates the scale. The results of the study indicate that the scale sati…

Handling Uncertainty of Strategic Ambitions—The Use of Organizational Identity as a Risk-Reducing Device

2015

Organizational identity can be designed to reduce the risks of uncertainty about future states of public organizations and the inherent potential issues related to evaluation and assessment. As such, organizational identity may shape a congruent and credible self-representation of the university, where a consistent narrative articulates compliance to diverse institutional frameworks, commitment to organizational distinctiveness, and a sensible rationale for strategic change. By examining the strategic plans of four European universities over a 10-year period of major organizational change, the paper discusses the subtleties of the specific combinations of the three different functions and t…

Towards a methodology to assess organizational learning capability

2011

PurposeThe present study aims to revalidate a measurement scale for organizational learning capability in the context of university faculty members. This is a particularly relevant context because it deals with knowledge‐intensive services. Following Chiva et al., organizational learning capability was conceptualized as a second factor construct including five dimensions: experimentation, risk taking, interaction with the external environment, dialogue and participative decision making.Design/methodology/approachData were collected from the Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica, a leading university in Costa Rica. The survey was addressed to faculty members. A total of 795 valid questionnaire…

Well-being-oriented management (WOM), organizational learning and ambidexterity in public healthcare: a two wave-study

2021

Drawing upon positive psychology and organizational learning literature, this study examines the relationship between well-being-oriented management (WOM) and unit-level ambidexterity. Building on the social exchange theory, our multilevel model sheds light on the relationship between individual perceptions of WOM, organizational learning, and unit-level ambidexterity in public hospitals. Based on the two-wave data obtained from 507 medical specialists, from 151 medical units, our multilevel analysis provides support for our two hypotheses. First, a positive relationship between WOM and unit-level ambidexterity was found. Second, organizational learning capability (OLC) moderated the relati…

Applying System Dynamics Modeling To Foster a Cause-and-Effect Perspective in Dealing with Behavioral Distortions Associated with a City’s Performanc…

2015

This paper aims to show how applying system dynamics methodology to performance management can provide a powerful modeling perspective enabling public sector organizations to prevent, detect, and counteract behavioral distortions associated with performance measurement. A dynamic performance management approach is able to support performance management system designers in outlining and implementing a consistent set of measures that can allow public sector decision-makers to pursue sustainable organizational learning and development. This perspective implies a major shift from a static to a dynamic picture of organizational processes and results. It means framing delays between causes and ef…

Diagnosing and measuring learning organizations

2005

PurposeTo explore and analyse various learning organizations and to attempt to outline the form of a holistic learning organization.Design/methodology/approachThe tool described in this article is a continuation of the work published in a Licentiate thesis in 1996 and developed further in a doctoral dissertation in 2001. The Learning Organization Diamond Tool is based on a holistic concept of a learning organization being regarded as a structure of related elements: driving forces, finding purpose, questioning, empowering and evaluation at two interconnected levels of individuals and the whole. Data from 686 respondents were gathered from 25 Finnish organizations in 1998.FindingsThe outcome…

Introduction to Integrating Knowledge and Learning Processes Minitrack

2013

This minitrack discusses knowledge management (KM) from an integrated perspective, i.e., the integration of KM, learning, and business processes. It mainly focuses on two issues: a) how can knowledge, learning and business processes integrated, and b) how can the related systems be integrated to enable an efficient workflow. Currently, even less learning environments take context and environment into account. Using mobile and ubiquitous technologies can lead to a paradigm shift in the construction of such learning environments: from static to highly contextualized knowledge and learning experiences. Based on the integration of knowledge and learning systems into social networks and social m…
