Pharmacological activation of CB2 receptors counteracts the deleterious effect of ethanol on cell proliferation in the main neurogenic zones of the a…
2015
Chronic alcohol exposure reduces endocannabinoid activity and disrupts adult neurogenesis in rodents, which results in structural and functional alterations. Cannabinoid receptor agonists promote adult neural progenitor cell (NPC) proliferation. We evaluated the protective effects of the selective CB1 receptor agonist ACEA, the selective CB2 receptor agonist JWH133 and the fatty-acid amide-hydrolase (FAAH) inhibitor URB597, which enhances endocannabinoid receptor activity, on NPC proliferation in rats with forced consumption of ethanol (10%) or sucrose liquid diets for 2 weeks. We performed immunohistochemical and stereological analyses of cells expressing the mitotic phosphorylation of his…
Appetite for destruction: A psychometric examination and prevalence estimation of destructive leadership in Sweden
2021
There is a growing awareness that destructive leadership has a significant negative impact on employe outcomes. However, little is known about the content and dimensionality of this multidimensional concept, and there are few reliable measures available for organizations and researchers to evaluate these behaviors. Based on a representative sample (N = 1132) of the Swedish workforce, the aim of this study is threefold: first, to examine the factor structure and validity of an easy-to-use multidimensional destructive leadership measure (Destrudo-L)in the general Swedish work context; second, to identify destructive leadership profiles using latent profile analysis (LPA), and determine in wha…
Audit and Earnings Management in Spanish SMEs
2016
Abstract Evidence about the relation between earnings management and voluntary audits is scarce, and there is no research about the effectiveness of mandatory audits to improve earnings quality. Using a sample of Spanish SMEs, where some companies are mandatorily audited and some are exempt from audit, we examine if audits, either mandatory or voluntary, help to improve accounting quality by constraining earnings management. We also examine differences between voluntary and mandatory audits, as well as the role of Big 4 and Middle-Tier auditors. After controlling for other characteristics that affect earnings management, we find that audited companies have lower absolute discretionary accru…
Shareholder Wealth Creation in Response to Announcements of Acquisitions of Unlisted Firms: Evidence from Spain
2011
We investigate shareholder value creation of Spanish listed firms in response to announcements of acquisitions of unlisted companies and compare this experience to the purchase of listed firms over the period 1991–2006. Similar to foreign markets, acquirers of listed targets earn insignificant average abnormal returns, whereas acquirers of unlisted targets gain significant positive average abnormal returns. When we relate these results to company and transaction characteristics our findings diverge from those reported in the literature for other foreign markets, as our evidence suggests that the listing status effect is mainly associated with the fact that unlisted firms tend to be smaller …
The Separating Role of Collateral Requirements in Credit Markets with Asymmetric Information
2001
In this paper we test Bester's (1985, 1987) prediction about the separating role of contracts that involve both interest rates and collateral requirements in credit markets. To test this prediction we use data from natural credit markets and controlled experiments. Using a sample of credits to small and medium size firms in Valencia, Spain, we relate two different types of contracts with the ex post risk type of the borrower and other relevant variables. We then design two incentive compatible contracts and analyze decisions under two different experimental treatments, one with moral hazard. Our empirical results confirm that borrowers of ex post lower risk choose contracts with higher coll…
Clinical and Functional Studies Reveal That TP73 Isoforms Levels Are Associated with Prognosis and RA-Resistance in Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia
2019
Background: TP73 isoforms gained particular relevance in acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) since Bernasola et al (JEM. 2004) demonstrated that TAp73 was directly regulated by the PML protein in the nuclear body. The isoforms differ in their transcriptional activity, with those lacking domains in the N-terminal part of the protein exerting a dominant negative effect on TP73 function. In a retrospective analysis of patients with APL treated in ICAPL study, Lucena-Araujo et al (Blood 2015) demonstrated the association between higher ΔNp73/TAp73 ratio values and poor clinical outcome. However, there is a diversity of TP73 isoforms and specially those lacking N-terminal domains (e.g.ΔEx2p73, ΔEx…
Arsenic Trioxide Abrogate MN1 Mediated RA-Resistance in Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia
2019
Introduction: Described as a well know marker of worse prognosis in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), MN1 overexpression has been associated with inv(16) or EVI1 overexpression (Heuser et al., Blood 2007). The promoter region of the MN1 gene has Retinoic Acid Response Elements (RAREs), and higher levels of MN1 expression have been associated with decreased response to retinoic acid (RA) in vitro. Nevertheless, in the context of acute promyelocytic leukemia, little is known about MN1 gene expression and functionality in vivo. Aims: Here, we investigated the effects of in vitro treatment with RA plus arsenic trioxide (ATO) in APL cell lines and primary blasts overexpressing MN1. Additionally, we …
Comparison between a guaiac and three immunochemical faecal occult blood tests in screening for colorectal cancer
2012
Abstract Background The aim of this study was to compare the performance of the guaiac-based faecal occult blood test (G-FOBT), with that of three immunochemical faecal occult blood tests (I-FOBT) which allow automatic interpretation. Patients and methods Under the French organised screening programme, 85,149 average-risk individuals aged 50–74 participating in the third screening round, performed both the G-FOBT (Hemoccult-II test) and one of the I-FOBTs: FOB-Gold, Magstream and OC-Sensor. Results Given the chosen threshold, the positivity ratio between the different I-FOBTs and the G-FOBT was 2.4 for FOB-Gold, 2.0 for Magstream and 2.2 for OC-Sensor (P = 0.17). The three I-FOBTs were supe…
Immunochemical faecal occult blood tests are superior to guaiac-based tests for the detection of colorectal neoplasms
2008
The aim of this study was to compare the performance of a guaiac-based faecal occult blood test (G-FOBT) with that of an immunochemical faecal occult blood test (I-FOBT). A total of 17,215 average risk individuals aged 50 to 74 enrolled in a population-based organised screening programme and performed a 3-day G-FOBT and a 2-day I-FOBT simultaneously. Among participants, 3.1% were found positive for the G-FOBT and 6.9% for the I-FOBT (p<10(-4)). Among the 1205 participants who tested positive and underwent a colonoscopy, the number of detected cancers and advanced adenomas was respectively 2.6 times higher and 3.5 times higher with the I-FOBT than with the G-FOBT. The positive predictive val…
