How does the age structure of worker flows affect firm performance?
2016
We develop a method for decomposing firm performance to impacts coming from the inflows and outflows of workers and apply it to study whether older workers are costly to firms. Our estimation equations are derived from a variant of the decomposition methods frequently used for measuring micro-level sources of industry productivity growth. By using comprehensive linked employer–employee data, we study the productivity and wage effects, and hence the profitability effects, of the hiring and separation of younger and older workers. The evidence shows that the separations of older workers are profitable to firms, especially in the manufacturing ICT-industries. To account for the correlation of …
Spain and the international scientific conferences on polio, 1940s-1960s
2010
The development of international health from a historical point of view has undergone major advances in recent times and constitutes a substantial part of the current agenda for historians of medicine. Within this framework, and focussing on a specific case study (international responses to poliomyelitis outbreaks in the 20th century), we explore the main actions and achievements of agencies such as the WHO and other private and international scientific organizations. Furthermore, this paper seeks to identify the Spanish presence and absence in these activities, their causes and consequences.
Internal Audit and External Audit Cooperation in EU Countries
2017
There is no common requirement guiding the approaches taken by the European Union (EU) public sector internal audit cooperation with external audit. There are countries with mandatory regulations of internal and external audit cooperation, in some cases cooperation bases on initiatives, to facilitate the auditing process and avoid duplication of work. The aim of this research is to compare the Latvian public administration internal audit and external audit cooperation approach with approaches of the European countries and evaluate each country’s internal audit relation with external audit. The methodology includes a comparative…
Fake news and patient-family-physician interaction in critical care: concepts, beliefs and potential countermeasures
2020
Fake news has been defined as fabricated information mimicking media content in form but not in organizational process or intent. Science and medicine are deeply affected by this increasing phenomenon. Critical care represents a hot spot for fake news due to the high risk of conflictive communication, the rapid turnaround of clinical news and high prevalence of unpleasant information. Communication with patients' relatives is one of the hardest aspects. The relationship between physicians and families is pivotal to improve relatives' comfort, and reduce anxiety and pain. Fake news may undermine this relationship, posing an alternative truth between the critical care physician and relatives,…
FISCAL POLICY`S INFLUENCE ON ECONOMIC GROWTH IN THE EUROPEAN UNION
2012
In this paper we study the impact of the fiscal policy on the economic growth for European Union, for the period 2000-2009. This subject represents a very debated problem in the economic literature. Our findings shows that, from the analysis of correlation between economic growth rate and total rate of taxation, there is generally an inverse relationship, meaning that an increase in the tax rate adversely affects economic growth. Continuing the analysis of the correlation between economic growth rate and total tax rate components it can be seen that there is an inverse relationship between labor taxation and capital taxation and economic growth in EU Member States. Both labour and capital t…

Master thesis in development management - University of Agder 2014 Microfinance has been recognized internationally as a great strategy in promoting women’s empowerment.
